    The leaf has adaptations to efficiently capture carbon dioxide from the atmosphere for photosynthesis. Carbon dioxide diffuses from the air spaces around the spongy mesophyll tissue into the leaf mesophyll cells, and then into the chloroplast where photosynthesis occurs. The leaf's structure of spongy mesophyll tissue surrounded by air spaces allows carbon dioxide to easily diffuse from the atmosphere into the chloroplast.
