2. READ THE FOLLOWING PASSAGE AND ANSWER THE QUESTIONS THAT FOLLOW (10MKS)
Once upon a time, Lion was very rich. He had very many cows. Every morning, he would milk
them and enjoy the milk with his family.
Hare, who had no cows of his own, started sneaking into the cattle shed long before dawn to
milk lion’s cows. By the time lion arrived, the cows would produce very little milk or none at all. Lion
started suspecting that someone was milking his cows and hatched a plan to catch the thief. So he
decided to sleep in the cowshed to see who it was that milked his cows.
As usual, Hare came before dawn and started milking the cows.
Hare did not wait to hear another word. He quickly jumped over the fence and ran very fast with the
Lion in hot pursuit. Soon Lion was almost catching Hare. Just then, Hare saw a hole under a tree and
dashed in. But he could not go deep inside as Lion had managed to grab his tail. Hare knew he had to do
something pretty fast!
“Wooi! You have missed my tail. You are holding a root! My tail is to the right,” Hare said loudly,
hoping to trick lion.
Immediately, Lion released Hare’s tail and grabbed a root which was near Hare’s tail. He then
started pulling very hard thinking it was Hare’s tail. Soon the root gave way and Lion went tumbling
backwards, a piece of root firmly held in his hand.
Lion was very annoyed, especially when he heard Hare laughing from inside the hole. He
decided to sit there and wait in till Hare got out. After all, he was not going to stay inside the hole
forever, he concluded.
By evening, the two were exhausted. Hare was also starting to panic. He was very hungry and
was wondering what would happen if lion decided not to leave. Lion, on his part, also wanted to go
home and feed his cows.
“Come over here, Hyena,” Lion called out. “I have some work for you.”
“I am at your service, Lion. What can I do for you?” Hyena asked as soon as he got to where the Lion
was.
“I have the thief who has been milking my cows inside this hole,” Lion said pointing at the hole. “I want
you to sit here, and when he tries to get out, catch him and bring him to me,” Lion instructed as he left
to go home.
After waiting for sometime, Hare called out to Hyena, “Hey, Hyena! You were left to guard me,
but can you see me?”
“No, I can’t see you; it is too dark inside the hole, “ Hyena replied.
“Then how can you guard me if you cannot see me, yet I can see you?” Hare asked. “Come closer and
open your eyes wide. That way you will see me.”
Hyena obliged. He got closer to the mouth of the hole opened his eyes wide. Suddenly, Hare
threw soil into Hyena’s eyes and rushed out of the hole. Hyena only heard Hare’s laughter as he
vanished into the bush. He was left wondering what he would tell Lion when they met.
