HOME- STYLE COOKIES

Question 1

Briefly describe the cookie production process

The production process is as follow:

The management gets orders from distributors and orders are used for planning the
production. Each shift lists of the cookies to be made that day is delivered to the person in
charge of mixing. That person checks the master list that indicates the ingredients needed.
The computer than determines the amount of each ingredient needed according to the
quantity. The ingredient are automatically sent to a giant mixing machine where the
ingredients are combined and the batter is poured into cutting the machines. Then the cookies
are dropped onto a conveyor belt and transported through one of the two ovens. Cookies are
then Filled. Non-filled cookies are cut rather than round. Cookies emerges from the oven then
fed on to spiral cooling racks and at last Cookies come off the cooling racks, and workers
place the cookies into boxes manually, removing any broken cookies in the process.

Question 2
What are two ways that the company has increased productivity? Why did
increasing the length of the ovens result in a faster output rate?
The two ways by which the company has increased productivity are:

 By cutting non- filled cookies diagonally. The diagonal cookies requires less space
than the straight cookies and that results in a higher level of productivity.
 Increasing the length of each oven by 25 feet, which enabled them to bake more
cookies at once , which increased the rate of production.

Question 4

What factors cause the company to carry minimal amounts of certain

inventories? What benefits result from this policy?
The main factor that causes the company to carry this approach is that fact that the
ingredients and the cookies have a short shelf life. Since the company is set on providing a
product that is high quality and does not use preservative or additives, they use minimal
inventories to retain the freshness of product and to avoid waste of resources. Also, the
products are ordered based on current orders. Benefits from this will include that
the company will need small silos for each ingredient, and that there will be less waste.

Question 5
As a consumer, what things do you consider in judging the quality of
cookies you buy in supermarket?

As a consumer, the things I consider in judging the quality of cookies is its freshness and
high quality. Second the ingredients if they are more natural I would be more convinced in
buying those cookies. Third is the packaging of the product , as appearance tells a lot about
the product so I would buy a product with more nice and neat packaging.
