CURRICULUM:-

MEANING:-

It is derived from Latin word “currere” which means “to run”. It is a runway or blue print of an
educational programme.

DEFINITION:-

According to Bevis (1989), curriculum defined as “ those transactions and interactions that
take place between students and teachers and among students with the intent that learning take
place.”

According to Stenhouse (1975), curriculum defined as an attempt to communicate the


essentials principles and features of an educational proposal in such a form that it is open to
critical scrutiny and capable of effective translation into practice.

NURSING CURRICULUM:-

It is the learning opportunities and the learning activities that faculty plan and implement in
various settings for a particular group of students for a specific period or time in order to attain
the objectives.( Florence Nightingale International Foundation).

CURRICULUM COORDINATOR:-

Curriculum coordinator is an individual who is charged with the responsibility of serving as a


leader and as a coordinator of the development and the implementation of the instructional
program of the district.
Curriculum coordinator is a member of a teaching staff with a largely administrative function
whose job is to ensure that a curriculum is effective and effectively studied and taught.

REQUIREMENTS AND ELIGIBILTY FOR CURRICULUM COORDINATOR


The minimum educational requirement for most instructional coordinator positions in public
schools is a master's degree or higher—usually in education—plus a State teacher or
administrator license. A master's degree also is preferred for positions in other settings.
Education and training. Instructional coordinators should have training in curriculum
development and instruction or in the specific field for which they are responsible, such as
mathematics or history. Courses in research design teach how to create and implement research
studies to determine the effectiveness of a given method of instruction or curriculum and how
to measure and improve student performance. Instructional coordinators are usually required to
take continuing education courses to keep their skills current. Topics may include teacher
evaluation techniques, curriculum training, new teacher orientation, consulting and teacher
support, and observation and analysis of teaching.

- Minimum M.Sc. in respective field.
- Had undergone special training in field of curriculum development.
- Previous work experience as curriculum coordinator at school level and block or district
level.
Licensure. Instructional coordinators must be licensed to work in public schools. Some States
require a teaching license, whereas others require an education administrator license.
Experience alone is not enough along with that the certification from university that have
undergone to this special course.
Other qualifications. Instructional coordinators must have a good understanding of how to
teach specific groups of students and expertise in developing educational materials. As a result,
many people become instructional coordinators after working for several years as teachers.
Also beneficial is work experience in an education administrator position, such as a principal or
assistant principal, or in another advisory role, such as a master teacher, department chair or
lead teacher.
- Should have special degree or diploma in special language like Hindi, English.
- Undergone various workshop, conferences and education program of in-service in the
field of curriculum development
Instructional coordinators must be able to make sound decisions about curriculum options and
to organize and coordinate work efficiently. They should have strong interpersonal and
communication skills. Familiarity with computer technology also is important for instructional
coordinators, who are increasingly involved in gathering technical information for students and
teachers.

Advancement. Depending on experience and educational attainment, instructional


coordinators may advance to higher administrative positions in a school system or to
management or executive positions in private industry.
- Promotion as curriculum coordinator can be done if he is having special skills in
knowledge or experience.

ROLE OF CURRICULUM COORDINATOR IN PLANNING:-


PLANNING:-
Planning means to decide in advance what is to be done. It charts a course of actions for the
future. It is an intellectual process and it aims to achieve a coordinated and consistent set of
operations aimed at desired objectives.
ESSENTIALS OF PLANNING
● Yields reasonable organizational objectives and develops alternative approaches to meet these
objectives.
● Helps to eliminate or reduce the future uncertainty and chance.
● Helps to gain economical operations.
● Lays the foundation for organizing.
● Facilitates co-ordination.
● Helps to facilitate control.
● Dictates those activities to which employers are directed
ROLE OF COORDINATOR IN PLANNING:

The Planning Coordinator provides leadership in planning and evaluation of programs and
services by:
❖Coordinating the development, implementation and monitoring of the agency’s outcome based
service delivery planning cycle, including the oversight of the strategic and operational plans
❖Coordinating the program and agency planning, goal setting, monitoring and evaluation
❖Facilitating discussion of goals and measures
❖Facilitating the development and maintenance of systems and processes for the ongoing
measurement of success and opportunities
❖Implementing systems and processes to collect and analyse data, trends and other related
information that impacts the agency, its community and programs
❖Collecting and analyzing data to support the ongoing planning cycles
❖Collecting analyzing and reporting the progress and outcomes achieved by the agency and its
programs for funders, clients, board and other organizations.
❖Coordinates the development of curriculum objectives for the area: monitors the
implementation and evaluation of these objectives.
❖ Coordinates the process for selection of textbooks, equipment and instructional supplies for the
curriculum area.

ROLE OF CURRICULUM COORDINATOR IN IMPLEMENTING:-


A plan for implementation, including time and resources required, should be created. A plan
for faculty development is made to assure consistent implementation.
Management of curriculum implementation:-
● Clear responsibility of certain bodies, committees and individuals should be one of key
elements in the process of curriculum implementation.
● Role of the students in process of curriculum management should be clearly defined.
● The committee for coordination among courses in order to synchronize objectives of courses
and overall curriculum should be established.
● Clear feedback on customer requests should be defined.
ROLE OF COORDINATOR IN IMPLEMENTATION:
⮚ Administer implementation lifecycle for all process and coordinate with clients to maintain
knowledge on all project goals and ensure completion within required timeframe.

⮚ Supervise all projects and efficient working of all team members and clients and assist to
identify and resolve all issues efficiently for all the projects .
⮚ Coordinate with implementation manager and monitor all phases of projects and maintain all
project objectives within required time frames and budget requirements .
⮚ Prepare an installation guide and maintain status of all plans and design and efficient schedule.
⮚ Maintain schedule for implementation projects and document all processes and recommend
improvements to same.
⮚ Coordination and preparation of course materials.
⮚ Administration of the departmental placement examination including supervision and
enforcement of proper student placement.
⮚ Organization and coordination of departmental curriculum workshops.
⮚ Coordination and supervision of curriculum –wide enhancement projects ( e.g oral
assessment )
⮚ Clear communication between instructor and coordinators , graduate student teachers and
faculty .
⮚ Orientation for first time graduate student teachers
⮚ Coordination of faculty class visits.
⮚ Through regular meetings with instructors, the coordinator monitors the effectiveness of
materials and assessment instruments.
⮚ Coordination of assessment procedures , the coordinator coordinates the implementation and
scoring of assessment instruments in all sections.
⮚ Update and feedback.
⮚ Conducts curriculum meetings for area as required.
⮚ Attends curriculum and other professional conferences.
⮚ Provides support and guidance to teachers in handling of day-to-day problems of instruction
and implementation of curriculum.
⮚ Promotes innovation within the curriculum area.
⮚ Works with curriculum committees to ensure successful completion of all phases of the
curriculum cycle.
⮚ Works with curriculum committees in organizing and coordinating appropriate meeting
in order for effective continuity and articulation of the curriculum throughout the district.

ROLE OF CURRICULUM COORDINATOR IN EVALUATION:-

Evaluation of curriculum presents the final stage inside cyclic process of improvement and
development of curriculum.

Purposes of evaluation-

● Without evaluation procedure it would be hard to imagine monitoring of institution


progress toward desired needs.
● This process is necessary to provide the evidences that institution made a step in the
right direction, as well as useful information to stakeholders.
● It helps in the process of identification of problems inside curriculum and institution,
solving of problems and redesigning of certain aspects of curriculum.

Methods:-Evaluation can be performed as short-term and long-term evaluation.

● Short-term evaluation has a role of “friendly” criticism.


● Long term evaluation is a crucial one, with much deeper impact.

ROLE OF COORDINATOR IN EVALUATION:

⮚ Chair the faculty curriculum steering committee .


⮚ Assist faculty in designing assessments for the adopted benchmarks and standards .
.compare actual instructional practice against the written curriculum.
⮚ Examine overall framework of curriculum, especially vertical and horizontal linkages of
curriculums as revealed through curriculum mapping, assessing how themes and concepts
cross subject divisions and subjects flow from lower grades to higher grades.
⮚ Review and develop agreements on the best design for unit planning.
⮚ Recommend to administration and faculty specific alterations to improve curriculum
delivery and linkage.
⮚ Assist in the definition of exit criteria per grade / subject.
⮚ Review and develop assessment policies and practices and make recommendations for
varied and effective measurement of curriculum delivery and use of assessment to revise
curriculum and modify instruction.
⮚ Coordinate professional development activities and their linkage to curriculum and
instructional needs .making recommendation for improvement as appropriate.
⮚ Coordinate all accreditation and authorization processes .
⮚ Examine course offerings in all three divisions, including sections taught, make
recommendation for additions , and changes for effective use of resources as appropriate.
⮚ Assist the director in developing quality indicators as a data source for students learning and
teacher performance .

⮚ Perform additional , related duties as assigned.

Evaluation of curriculum can be made through evaluation of many different aspects as:-

● Psychological and interpersonal skill


● Continuing learning
● Professional satisfaction
● Practice behaviour
● Educational achievement and cognitive development
● Institutional issues
● Student passing rates
● Making of clinical mistakes
● Clinical problem solving
● Educational cost per student
● Cost efficiency of graduates as practitioners
