1 Introduction
This soil test report has been prepared on the basis of an agreement between contractor and soil Test
Company to conduct the assignment names geotechnical investigation for Construction of Proposed 12
Storied Residential Building. Accordingly, a detailed subsoil investigation program has been undertaken
and carried out by the soil test company during the month of February, 2020. The subsurface
investigation work includes execution of seven (07) boreholes extended to a variable depth, performance
of a verity of field and laboratory tests to determine the subsoil conditions. The information, so far has
been obtained from carrying out the above subsurface investigation program, is provided in detail, in the
following article
1.1 Location
The Geotechnical Investigation works has been undertaken for the design and construction
of part of the Construction of Proposed 12 Storied Residential Building. The location name is South
Kalibari Road, Jhiltuli, Faridpur Sadar, Faridpur. Plot No: 2956 (BS), Khatian-452, Mouza: Faridpur.
The purpose of this geotechnical Investigation was to determine the geotechnical properties and
distribution of sub-surface materials and ground water levels within the project area.
1.3 Classification of soil
The system used for preparation of this report in the identification of soil is the Unified Soil
Classification System (USCS) which was developed by the US Army Corps of Engineers during World
War II and has since gained international acceptance and has been adopted in its metricated form by the
Standards Association of Australia.
2 Scope of the work
The Geotechnical Investigation consisted of field studies and laboratory tests. The field portion of the
investigation consists of test borings and field testing. Laboratory studies included tests to determine soil
properties including physical and mechanical properties. The scope of work for the geotechnical
consultancy services of the project are summarized as follows:
Mobilization and demobilization.
Soil boring, field testing and carrying out sufficient in-situ testing and sampling.
Standard Penetration Tests (SPT’s)
Laboratory testing of obtained samples to determine the properties of the subsoil.
Determination of geotechnical parameters required for foundation analysis.
Carrying out engineering analysis for foundation design.
Reporting & Bearing Capacity Calculation
The borehole in the size of 89 mm in diameter was advanced by boring machine for clayey/sandy layer.
A wash boring was advanced by jetting water which pumped through the hollow drilling rods. Cuttings
were removed from the hole by the circulating water. The drilling rods are moved up and down by
pulling and slackening the rope and are at the same time rotated back and forth by means of a driller.
The water is pumped from a small swamp and the soil-laden water from the borehole is discharged into
the same reservoir, where the coarse materials settled out and from which the so-called 'wet samples' can
be secured. Casing in the size of NX 89 mm is required in the soft or cohesion less soils, but is often
omitted in stiff, cohesive soils which only small representative samples as desired. Changes in the
character of the soils are determined partly by the feel of the driller or the resistance to penetration and
partly by examination of the spoils in the water as it emerges from the casing. But definite identification
of the soil can only be made when representative samples are taken from the bottom of the boreholes.
3.2 Boring
The site is for the proposed project. The boreholes were made by the Percussion Drilling Method.
Disturbed samples for very loose to very dense sandy layer with clay silt collected during Standard
Penetration Testing 0 m to above @ 1.5 m intervals (ASTM D 1586).The subsoil within the vicinity of
the boreholes consists mainly are shown in the bore logs. The borings were drilled vertically through soil
for all boreholes or stopped in firm layer when SPT N-value was greater than 50 blows/ft. Accuracy of
bore holes position were not more than 2.0 m. in horizontal direction and 0.20 m in vertical direction.
Soils boring of 100 mm diameter have been conducted by mechanical percussive wash method with
power-operated pump using auto trip hammer equipment’s as approved by the consultant’s Geotechnical
Engineer at the locations provided by the consultant. The investigation has been carried out in
accordance with ASTM D - 420 & 1452. Field identification and logging of soil samples has been made
in accordance with the Unified Soil Classification System (USCS).
All the borings have been conducted in the presence of the experienced technical personnel of Soil Test
Company for drilling and logging. The borehole records have been taken that include soil type, nature of
sample, soil moisture content and consistency, SPT blow counts, ground water observation and apparent
origin (fill, alluvium, recent sediments, etc.) and daily field logs have been prepared by the Site Engineer
of Soil Test Company. Bore logs have been prepared in the format in accordance with USCS
classification and draft logs have been submitted within one week of drilling. The entire bore has been
SPT tests have been carried out using auto trip hammer in accordance with the procedure in
ASTM D-1586; from existing ground level to above @ 1.5 m intervals. Before conducting the test, the
bottom of the borehole has been cleaned properly and the spoon has been seated vertically in position in
the borehole. Disturbed samples have been collected from the SPT tube. Undisturbed sample (75mm
diameter) has been collected at several depths where cohesive soil strata were encountered, in good
quality thin walled seamless Shelby Tubes conforming to the ASTM D-1587. No SPT have been
conducted immediately before collection of an undisturbed sample. Ground water table has been
measured 24 hours after drilling and has been recorded in the bore log.
Soil Test Company has stored samples in a place that avoids contact direct sun-light, secured and free
from any disturbance and transported within a week of extraction to the laboratory of Dhaka office.
3.5 Laboratory Testing
The laboratory tests performed were as per requirement of the tests decided by Consultant’s
Geotechnical Engineer are listed below:
Table 1: list of laboratory tests quantity information.
All tests have been carried out in the laboratory previously approved by Consultant’s Geotechnical
Engineer.
3.6 Standard Penetration Test
Standard Penetration Tests (SPT) were carried out to provide an indication of the density and/or
consistency of the ground and to obtain disturbed samples for visual inspection and laboratory testing
and classification. The results of the tests were given on the boring logs in Appendices A2 and were
expressed as an N value. The N value is defined as the blow-count for 12"(300 mm) penetration recorded
after the seating drive of 150 mm. In the case of premature refusal conditions, the number of blows for a
recorded penetration (including the seating drive) was noted.
During SPT test, the rope-and-pulley (R-P) method was used. This consisted of a hollow cylindrical

by an experienced site engineer. Depth with thickness & description of strata encountered, soil sampling,
results of in-situ tests, etc. was presented in the bore logs.
3.8 Sampling
Groundwater is one element that affects in the stability and foundation analyses. The groundwater level
was measured 24 hours after completion of the borehole. However, the low permeability of the soil will
mean that the water level in the borehole is controlled more by drilling fluid rather than by the ground
water itself. Significant fluctuations in the location of ground water table should be anticipated
throughout the year.
4 Laboratory Testing
Geotechnical laboratory tests were performed on the soil samples to classify soil and to determine their
engineering characteristics. All laboratory tests were conducted in accordance with ASTM Standards.
The soils were also classified based on the Unified Soil Classification System (USCS).
Sieve analyses were performed by means of sieving (ASTM D 422). For oven-dry materials, sieving
were carried out for particles retained on a 0.075 mm sieve. In sieve analysis, the mass of soil retained
on each sieve is determined and expressed as a percentage of the total mass of the sample. The particle
size is plotted on a logarithmic scale so that two soils having the same degree of uniformity are
represented by curves of the distribution plot. Hydrometer analysis is based on the principle of
sedimentation of soil grains in water. When a soil specimen is dispersed in water, the particles settle at
different velocities, depending on their shape, size, and weight. For simplicity, it is assumed that soil
particles are spheres and the velocity of soil particles can be express by Stokes' law.
Atterberg limits were determined (ASTM D 423-66 & D 424-59) on representative soil samples of
Soil & Pile Engineering Construction Page 6
Sub-soil Investigation Report. March 2020
cohesive soils. The Atterberg limits refer to arbitrarily defined boundaries between the liquid and plastic
states and between the plastic and brittle states of grained soils, expressed as water content, in
percentage. The liquid limit is the water content at which a part of soil placed in a standard cup, cut by a
standard grooving tool, will flow together at the base of the groove when the cup is subjected to 25
standard shocks. The one- point liquid limit test is usually carried out and distilled water may be added
during soil mixing to achieve a desired consistency.
Specific gravity (ASTM D 854-83) of soil is performed by using a pycnometer. Specific gravity is the
ratio of the mass of unit volume of soil at a stated temperature to the mass the same volume of gas-free
distilled water at a stated temperature. The specific gravity of a soil is used in the phase relationship of
air, water, and solids in a given volume of the soil.
Direct shear test (AASHTO 3080-72) of soil is performed by using a shear box (50 mm x 50 mm x 35
mm) of standard dimension with loading equivalent or more than the effective stress of in-situ soil. Unit
weight and void ratio was measured following the recognized correlation.
Moisture content of in-situ soil was performed by following ASTM D420-69 Standards by putting a
handy some of soil in a can and heated up for about 24 hours using an oven.
Unconfined compressive strength test (ASTM D 2166) is one of the mostly used shear strength test. If
the soil samples ejected from Shelby tube was sand then it was not possible to conduct this test.
This test were performed on available representative disturbed and undisturbed soil samples, collected
from different strata according to ASTM D854-83.
5 Reporting
5.1 Logs
All bore logs have been written in English and presented in a form acceptable to EIC that contains a
summary of all the information on the daily site records, a description of all strata and levels of changes
of strata.
Soil Test Company has submitted two copies of preliminary laboratory test results to the
consultant’s representative and after review of the consultant’s representative the test results have been
included in the Final Report.
Following completion of the boreholes, and field and laboratory testing, a comprehensive
geotechnical final report has been prepared comprising:
Site description and geology, site plan.
Investigation methodology.
Detailed logs, and location plans.
Laboratory test results.
Ground water table within the boreholes 24 hours after completion.
Mechanical properties of soil obtained from the field and laboratory tests.
Soil strength parameters.
5.4 Seismic Zone and Liquefaction Potential
Ali (1998) presented the earthquake base and seismic zoning map of Bangladesh. Tectonic frame work
of Bangladesh and adjoining areas indicate that Bangladesh is situated adjacent to the plate margins of
India and Eurasia where devastating earthquake has occurred in the past. On-availability of earthquake,
geologic and tectonic data posed great problem in earthquake hazard mapping of Bangladesh in the past.
The first seismic map which was prepared in 1979 was developed considering only the epicenter
location of past earthquake and isoseismic map of very few of them. During preparation of national
building code of Bangladesh in 2015, substantial effort was given in revising the existing seismic zoning
map using geophysical and tectonic data earthquake data, ground motion attenuation data and strong
motion data available from within as well as outside of the country. During this study geophysical
and tectonic data were available from geological survey of Bangladesh. Earthquake data were
collected from NOAA data files and geodetic survey, U.S. Department of commerce. Seismic
zoning map
for Bangladesh has been presented in Bangladesh National Building code (BNBC) published in 2015.
The pattern of ground surface acceleration contours having 200 year return period is the basis of this
seismic zoning map.
There are four zones in the map— Zone I, Zone II, Zone III and Zone IV. The seismic coefficients of the
zones are 0.12, 0.20, 0.28 and 0.36 for Zone I, Zone II, Zone III and Zone IV respectively.
Bangladesh National Building Code (2015) placed the engineering project area foundation in seismic
Zone II and Zone III as shown in Figure 5. This zoning was based on consistent ground motion criterion
6 Geotechnical Properties
6.1 Introduction
The Geo-technical properties i.e. the physical as well as the engineering properties of the investigated
soil have been determined on the basis of executing two boring each extending to a depth of
maximum16.5m and subsequent performance of the laboratory tests. These are discussed in detail in the
following articles.
The physical properties i.e. the color, odor, texture and the general index properties such as the specific
gravity and plasticity have been determined by visual inspection and from performing some specific
laboratory tests. These may be summarized as follows:
i) Subsoil Stratification:
The top formation of soil, extending to the depth of investigation is predominated by nature consisting of
Very Dense Silty Sand (Reference: Bore-logs).
The engineering properties of the subsoil formation of the project area have been determined by the
performance of the laboratory tests. The evaluated properties may be summarized as follows.
i) Compressibility:
The top layer of silty clay, has been slightly compressible in nature as the values of the compression
index have been found to vary from 0.03 to 0.19 and as well as the natural void ratios have been found to
vary from 0.44 to 0.59.
ii) Angle of Internal Friction:
The values of the angle of internal friction, as obtained from the performance of the direct shear tests,
vary from 25.00 to 35.00.
iii) Unconfined Compression Strength:
The values of the compressive strength (KPa), as obtained from the performance of the Unconfined
Compression tests, vary from 37.78 to 49.98 and Strain Failure (%) vary from 8.44 to 11.25.
7 Conclusion and Recommendations
Printed hard copy of final report consisting borehole location plan, bore logs and laboratory test results
has been provided as required. All soil parameters obtained from field and lab tests are summarized and
attached herewith. SPT N values given in the bore logs are field values. Considering the magnitude of
the structure, the expert geotechnical \ structural engineer will put his justice to select the suitable depth
as well as type of foundation. For precise, the geotechnical \ structural engineer may calculate or collect
