Joint Variations and Combined Variations

Joint Variation
 y varies jointly as x and z if there exists a nonzero number k such that y = kxz, where x ≠ 0 and z ≠ 0.

Example 1:
The area A of a trapezoid varies jointly as the height h and the sum of the bases b1 and b2. Find the
equation of joint variation if A = 40 m2, h = 4 m, b1 = 8 m, and b2 = 12 m.
Solution:
The area varies jointly as the height and the sum of the bases.
A k ∙ h ∙ b 1+b2

A = kh(b1+b2)
40 = k(4)(8+12) Substitute the known values.
40 = k(4)(20) Simplify.
½=k Divide both sides by 80.
1
The equation for the area of a trapezoid is A= ℎ (b1+ b2 ).
2
Check:
1
A= ℎ (b1+ b2 )
2

A=40, h=4, b1=8 and b2=12

40=40 TRUE
Thus, the equation is correct.

Example 2:
Suppose y varies jointly as x and z, and y = 32 when x = 8 and z = 2. Find y when x = 15 and z = 6.
Solution:
y varies jointly as x and z.
y = k ∙ x ∙ z
y = kxz
32 = k(8)(2) Substitute the known values.
32 = 16k Simplify.
2=k Divide both sides by 16.

Rewriting the equation y = kxz with z = 6, we have:

y = 2(15)(6) Replace x with 15 and z with 6.

y = 180 Simplify.

2|P age
Example 3:
The area of rectangle varies jointly as its length and width. Find the equation of joint variation if A =
60ft2, l = 15ft, and w = 4ft.
Solution:
The area varies jointly as its length and width.
A = k ∙ l ∙ w
A = klw
60 = k(15)(4) Substitute the known values.
60 = 60k Simplify.
1=k Divide both sides by 60.

The equation for the area of rectangle is A=lw.

Combined Variation
 If a situation is modeled by an equation of the form y = kx/z, where k is a nonzero constant, we say
that y varies directly as x and inversely as z. The number k is called the variation constant.

Example 1:
If y varies directly with the square of x and inversely with z. If x = 2, y = 1 and z = 10, find y when x =
4 and z = 5.
Solution:
𝑘𝑥 2
𝑦= y varies directly as the square x and inversely with z.
𝑧

𝑘(2)2
1= Replace y with 1, x with 2 and z with 10.
10

4𝑘
1= Simplify.
10

10 = 4k Multiply both sides by 10.

10
=𝑘 Divide both sides by 4.
4

The constant of variation k is .

To find y when x = 4 and z = 5, replace x with 4 and z with 8. Thus,

𝑘𝑥 2
𝑦=
𝑧
5
(4)2 5
𝑦= 2
Replace k with , x with 4, and z with 5.
5 2

5
(16)
𝑦= 2
Simplify.
5

y=8

Example 2:
The time (t) it takes to construct a highway varies directly as the length of the road (1) but inversely
with the number of workers (w). If it takes 50 workers and 8 weeks to construct 2 kilometers of highway,
how long will it take 80 workers to construct 15 kilometers of highway?

3|P age
Solution:
The relationship between the variables t, l and w can be expressed by the equation:

varies directly
𝑘𝑙
𝑡=
𝑤 varies inversely

Substitute the known values in the combined variation model to find k.

400=2k Multiply both sides by 50.

k=200 Divide both sides by 2.
𝑘𝑙
Substitute 80 for w, 15 for l, and 200 for k in the equation 𝑡 = and simplify.
𝑤

𝑘𝑙
𝑡=
𝑤
(200)(15)
𝑡=
80
3,000
𝑡=
80
It will take 37.5 weeks for 80 workers to construct 15 kilometers of highway.
