1. (a) A studem is required to investigate the rate of reaction in which a fixed mass of magnesium
metaJ (0.12 g) is added to different volumes of L.5 M hydrochloric acid. The acid is
added from a burelle and water added to make the final volume of 50 cm3. The rime
taken for the magnesium ribbon to disappear is recorded. Figure 1 below shows the
burelle readings for the volume of acid added and the time taken for the magnesium to
disappear for each reaction. The initial burette reading is always 0.0 cm3.

(a) (i) From the results shown in Figure 1 construct a table to show expe riment number,
volume of acid added from the burette, volume of water added to the acid, and
time taken for the magnesium to disappear.
[ 4 marks]
(i i) Using the g raph paper on page 4, plot a graph of time taken fo r the magnesium
ribbon to disappear against volume of acid added from the burette.
[ 4 marks]
[ 1 mark]
(iv) Using the data from the graph determine the time it would take for 25 cm 3 of the
acid to react with the magnesium ribbon.
[ 1 mark]
(v) Write a ba lanced equation for the reacti on of magnesium with hydrochlo ric
acid.
