A. Give the IUPAC name for each compound. (3 points each)
1. 5-ethyl-2,6 dimethlyoctane
2. 2,2,5,5-tetramethyl-hexyne
B. Give the structure corresponding to each IUPAC name. (3 points each)
1. 6-ethyl-2-octyne
2. 1,3-heptadiene
3. 3-ethyl-3,4-dimethylnonane
General Chemistry 1
4. 4-Methyl-3-propylhex-3-en-1-yne
C. Each of the following IUPAC names is incorrect. Explain why it is incorrect and give
the correct IUPAC name. (6 points)
1. (1-methylbut-1-ene ) - pent-2-ene
- The substituent can be included in parent chain while still delivering the lowest
possible double bond number since it is in the first order of a chain.
2. (5-ethyl-2-methylhexane) - 2,5 dimethylheptane
- If we accept ethyl, which is situated in the fifth carbon in the chain, as a substituent, we
will disregard the parent chain rule, and that is to identify the longest chain. With
dimethyl as a substituent, we can make heptane, and that is the longest carbon chain
available.
