Research
Abstract
In this research I have examined how ePortfolios can be designed for Music postgraduate study through a practice led research
inquiry. This process involved designing two W eb 2.0 ePortfolio systems for a group of five post graduate music research students
.The design process revolved around the application of an iterative methodology called Software Develop as Research (SoDaR)
that seeks to simultaneously develop design and pedagogy. The approach implemented to designing these ePortfolio systems
applied four t theoretical protocols to examine the use of digitised artefacts in ePortfolio systems to enable a dynamic and inclusive
dialogue around representations of the students work.
The research and design process involved an analysis of existing software and literature with a focus upon identifying the
affordances of available W eb 2.0 software and the applications of these ideas within 21 Century life. The five post graduate music
students each posed different needs in relation to the management of digitised artefacts and the communication of their work
amongst peers, supervisors and public display. An ePortfolio was developed for each of them that were flexible enough to address
their needs within the university setting.
Work History
In this role I am currently an ICT consultant, webmaster and treasurer for Sweetfreedom Incorporated. Sweetfreedom Incorporated
organises community based music events that allow music communities, who have a limited voice, to amply and project that voice
further afield. My role as an ICT consultant is to help the board by providing support and education services to the board members,
helping them gain a better understanding of the use of interaction and design tools and how those tools can help their clients. I
have also designed, implemented and managed the Sweetfreedom website for the past two and half years. Sweetfreedom.org
implements a mix of open source technologies that includes Wordpress 3.1, Last.fm, Youtube.com, Myspace.com and
Facebook.com. The board and I are currently researching technologies such as Reverbnation.com, a free music social networking
site, to legally share music from these events and receive donations via Google checkout, see Checkout.google.com.
x Monitored incoming telephone calls to the various direct and wholesale support queues.
x Answered incoming calls, verified the identity of callers.
x Escalated calls from customers to the other points of escalation as required.
x Logged jobs for customers via the online job system.
x Resolved and completed jobs which could be completed quickly.
x Assisted customers in setting-up Microsoft Exchange Mail, Outlook 2003, Outlook 2007, Outlook 2010
x Tested functionality of mailboxes and websites.
x Provided quick logon/logoff walkthroughs of the W eb-Mail and other product interfaces.
x Managed calls relating to complaints and acted as the customer advocate.
x Meant key performance indicators including, 95 contacts per day and an Average talk time of 4:40 per call.
In this role I was a scholarship holding post graduate student acting as the research assistant and technical writer in
charge of completing my masters of Arts by research thesis. The successful completion of this project allowed me to
create a technical manual which documented how to create a new conceptual framework which allowed for the design,
documentation and implementation of two open source ePortfolio design models. These models acted as a prototype to
assist the project participants in show-casing their creative products and performances via a W eb 2.0 ePortfolio system in
a creative arts production setting. The thesis provides recommendations of policy and design on how ePortfolio designers
can implement W eb 2.0 ePortfolios in similar projects in creative arts university settings. The design process documented
how ePortfolios could be designed for Music postgraduate study through a practice led research inquiry. The design
process also revolved around the application of an iterative methodology called Software Develop as Research (SoDaR)
that simultaneously developed design and pedagogy. The thesis which acts as a technical manual for other ePortfolio
designers was examined and passed at an international level.
