She Stoops To Conquer Plot Summary

The play takes place in Mr. and Mrs. Hardcastle’s house, which is old and resembles

an old inn. They are anticipating the arrival of Marlow, who is the son of Mr. Hardcastle’s

friend. When Marlow and Hastings, a friend of Marlow’s, arrive at a pub, Tony, who is the

son of Mrs. Hardcastle from an earlier marriage, jokes to them and tells them to go to an

inn, which is the Hardcastles’ home. In the second act, Marlow and Hastings arrive at the

Hardcastles’ house. When they arrive, they act rudely to the Hardcastles’, who expected

Marlow to be a nice young man. Constance, Mrs. Hardcastle’s niece, tells them that they

were tricked by Tony, but they didn’t tell Marlow because they didn’t want to ruin his trip.

The third act starts with Kate, daughter of the Hardcastles, disappointed at Marlow’s

behavior. Marlow sees Kate in a dress and thinks that she is a maid and is attracted to her.

She decides to keep up with the act and both have a long conversation. In act four, Marlow

continues to be disrespectful to Mr. Hardcastle, which results in him getting kicked out.

After this incident, Marlow realizes what is going on. He wants to marry Kate. The fifth act

shows Hardcastle forgiving Marlow and allows him to marry his daughter Kate.
