Introduction: Energy efficiency and cost optimization strategy
Bourbon Offshore recognizes four Energy efficiency and cost optimization strategy :
• Technical availability
• Crew Skill
• Security
• Expenses management
Bourbon's vision is aimed at becoming the preferred suppliers
in offshore maritime services.
An important aspect of cost control is the development of a
fuel management culture within the company.
Fuel management can be divided into several aspects: Summary :
- vessel type/ the diesel-electric propulsion system;
• Technical availability
- energy efficiency search; • Crew Skill
• Security
- fuel consumption control through periodic

reporting;
- fuel consumption optimization.

Advantages
• High efficiency (for the specific vessel
mission)
• High reliability due to multiple engine
redundancy
• Higher flexibility of arrangements (the
engines location is not limited by the
shaftline)
• Higher operational flexibility (one engine can drive

Optimization of maintenance
on main groups An environmental issue
- By reducing the number of hours of the main - “Pollution must be measured and reduced as much
groups, we optimize their as possible. (SMS Section 10, Environmental
MTBR (mean time before removal), as well as Management). Fuel consumption generates
periodic maintenance. atmospheric pollution by releasing substances such
“less running hours = less maintenance” as CO2, nitrogen oxide (Nox), sulfur oxides (Sox),
(SMS, Section 4, Reliability and Maintenance carbon monoxide
Procedure) (CO) and fine particles (PM).
ex. - Reducing fuel consumption is a high priority for
oil change: Caterpillar 3516C (2000 kW): Bourbon, in order to comply with international
800l/1000h environmental regulations
Oil change: Cummins QSM11 (EDG): 30l/250h and to support an ambitious CO2 reduction plan.
- Very low load → poor combustion and engine Bourbon measures its carbon footprint using
fouling ADEME's “Bilan Carbone” method.
main--> risk of failure. - The carbon tax for marine fuels is being studied in
many organizations (EU, IMO, etc.) and could be
generalized to
global scale (see “Carbon taxation for International
maritime fuels”, IMF Working Paper)

СONCLUSIONS
- substantial cost savings related to diesel consumption (several
kE/year/vessel), all the more so in the event of an increase in the price of
bunkers and implementation of a carbon tax;
- less use of the MPs at low revs, therefore better availability
PM technique;
- competent crew to сomplete the instructions;
- preventive maintenance is a key point for technical availability.It can be provided by
subcontractors or by trained Bourbon staff
-hull/weather/engine condition/trim and draft and vessel speed control optimizes fuel costs
up to 25%
