According to one broad definition of autonomous learning or autonomy in learning, "

independent learning” refers to a person's ability to think, act, and study on their own without
the assistance of others. It is likewise referred to as a cognitive attribute of a child to learn.

Thus, independent learning and parental teaching or involvement go side in hand,

especially in these times of pandemic, where we employ Self-Learning Modules (SLMs) that
are designed for capacitive independent learners by nature.

Thus, the capacity of student learning , which is cognitive in nature together with the
ability of the parents to teach, which is somehow inherent to them as the child’s first teachers
but not natural as an academic teacher by profession is vital in the present situation that we
are in the so called “new normal”.

The capacity of the learner extends to his reading ability reading comprehension
skills, metacognitive analysis skills and the physiological and environmental factors.
Physiological factors such as the child’s ability to learn alone and in an environment not
designed like a school, learning in different times and modalities. While environmental
factors include the physical environments space, organization, lighting, temperature and
security.

While the parent’s ability to teach extends on his ability to comprehend lessons and
to explain them to the child and to facilitate learning, which is far complex than teaching
his/her child at the age of 4 or 5.

Overall, the idea emphasizes the stories of parents as they take on the role of
becoming their children's study buddy at home. In this type of educational setting, parents'
resilience mechanisms are amplified since they are critical to maintaining learning continuity
during the pandemic.
