Module #: 2
Lesson #: 1 Activity Name: What’s New

PRE-ACTIVITY:

1. Asexual reproduction involves one parent and produces offspring that are

genetically identical to each other and to the parent. Sexual reproduction involves
two parents and produces offspring that are genetically unique.

2.

Types of Asexual Reproduction Examples

1. Fission. Occurs when a parent cell Bacteria, Protists, Unicellular Fung
splits into two identical daughter cells of
the same size.
2. Fragmentation. Occurs when a Starfish, some worms, fungi, plants,
lichens
parent organism breaks into fragments,
or pieces, and each fragment develops
into a new organism.
3. Budding. Occurs when a parent cell Yeast, Hydra
forms a bubble-like bud. The bud stays
attached to the parent cell while it grows
and develops. When the bud is fully
developed, it breaks away from the
parent cell and forms a new organism.
4. Vegetative Reproduction. Occurs Plants
when new individuals are formed without
the production of seeds or spores.

Types of Life Cycles Description

1. Haploid Life Cycle The haploid life cycle is the simplest life
cycle. It is found in many single-celled
eukaryotic organisms. Organisms with a
haploid life cycle spend the majority of
their lives as haploid gametes. When the
haploid gametes fuse, they form a diploid
zygote. It quickly undergoes meiosis to
produce more haploid gametes that
repeat the life cycle.
2. Diploid Life Cycle Organisms with a diploid life cycle spend
the majority of their lives as diploid
adults. When they are ready to
reproduce, they undergo meiosis and
produce haploid gametes. Gametes then
unite in fertilization and form a diploid
zygote, which immediately enters G1 of
the cell cycle. Next, the zygote's DNA is
replicated. Finally, the processes
of mitosis and cytokinesis produce two
genetically identical diploid cells.
3. Alternation of Generations In plants, the life cycle alternates
between the diploid sporophyte and
haploid gametophyte.
