Q1. Based on the following information, predict the creep life for a component subjected to
200 MPa, and 527 o C using Larson-Miller extrapolation technique.
+
sL =1448 MPa, (Tensile strength in L-direction)
-
sL =1448 MPa, (Compressive strength in L-direction)
+
sT =44.8 MPa, (Tensile strength in T-direction)
-
sT =248 MPa, (Compressive strength in T-direction)
Q3. (i) For a material subjected to a certain temperature and stress conditions, it is observed
that the strain rate decreased by 8 times when the grain size is doubled. What is the
dominant creep mechanism that is operative here?
(ii) A high carbon steel is known to have a Vicker’s hardness of 800 HV. Estimate the tensile
strength of this material.
(iii) If the shear modulus of the material is 200 GPa, estimate the theoretical strength of the
material. Why is theoretical strength different from observed strengths?
(iv) Explain the difference between high cycle fatigue and low cycle fatigue.
(v) Explain two important advantages of using J-integral for fracture toughness assessment.
Q4. Given engineering stress, s=200 MPa and engineering strain, e=0.01, and
ds/de= 3 MPa,
Find the slope of the true stress σ vs. true strain ε at this point.
Q5. The fatigue lives of certain steel were found to be 100 cycles at ±70 MPa and 120 cycles
at ±50 MPa. A part made from this steel was given 60 cycles of 0-60 MPa in the beginning,
and then cycled at 0-40 MPa for the remaining period at 50 Hz, what would be its remaining
life? The ultimate tensile strength of the steel is given 600 MPa.
