1. Thermal Analysis of Heat Sink of a Micro-Processor in any available desktop
computer. Analyze the fins with a fan on a normal load. Compare the heat
transfer with heat generation by processor.
2. Energy audit of Water Geyser. Compare the results of conventional geyser with
gas and electric for a particular temperature and mass of water. Consider all
type of losses. Compare theoretical and experimental results.

lab under forced convection. Also check the effectiveness of the fins.
8. Verify the design of standard household hot-pot. Compare theoretical &
experimental results of rate of heat transfer and time in hot-pot.
9. Verify the design of double pipe heat exchanger in your heat transfer lab.
Compare your results with different mass flow rate and inlet and outlet
temperatures.
10. Verify the design of Spiral tube heat exchanger in your heat transfer lab.
Compare your results with different mass flow rate and inlet and outlet

on real time values of mass flowrate and temperatures. Calculate effectiveness
of Car radiator also.
19. Discuss the insulation used in domestic water geyser. Verify the thickness of
insulation used in geyser is optimized for our weather condition. Compare your
experimental results with theoretical results.
20. Verify the performance (effectiveness) of double pipe heat exchanger under
parallel flow and counter flow. Compare theoretical and experimental results.
21. Verify the performance (effectiveness) of Spiral tube heat exchanger under
parallel flow and counter flow. Compare theoretical and experimental results.
22. Verify the performance (effectiveness) of spiral tube double pipe heat
exchanger with fins under parallel flow and counter flow. Compare theoretical
and experimental results.
23. Verify the performance (effectiveness) of Plate exchanger under parallel flow

24. Discuss the design of a thermos having glass bottle inside, to maintain a specific
temperature of water in summer for specific time period.
25. Comparison of experimental and theoretical power for an electric kettle.
Consider all losses. Compare theoretical results with an available kettle for
length of the element and power required for specific time duration of heating
up to certain temperature.
26. Design of solar geyser to replace the domestic standard gas geyser. Compare
running cost of these two systems.
27. Design an experiment in your heat transfer lab to calculate the thermal
conductivity (‘k’) of Iron, Aluminum, wood and rubber. Compare experimental
and theoretical results.
28. Design an experiment in your heat transfer lab to calculate the thermal
conductivity (‘k’) of Copper, glass, foam, and brick. Compare experimental and
theoretical results.
29. Design an experiment in your heat transfer lab to calculate the thermal
conductivity (‘k’) of water, air and oil. Compare experimental and theoretical
results.
30. Design a composite wall for your class room wall exposing to atmosphere during
summer to reduce heat transfer up to 60%. Propose design for windows also.

Heat Transfer Lab. Discuss the reasons of high or low effectiveness of these heat
exchangers. (Use counter-flow arrangement).
32. Design an experiment in your heat transfer lab to calculate convective heat
transfer coefficient (‘h’) over a square plate for a constant air velocity over it.
Compare theoretical and experimental values of ‘h’ and discuss.
33. Design a condenser for a power plant in your Thermodynamics lab; compare its
design with the existing one.
34. Discuss the design of a vacuum flask available in the market, to maintain a
specific temperature of water in summer for specific time period.
35. Calculate the overall heat transfer coefficient (U) of spiral tube heat exchanger
available in your heat transfer lab. Compare your results with available data in
the literature.
36. Calculate the Area density of car radiator of 800 cc car. Verify is it a compact
heat exchanger? Compare “beta” with a car radiator without fins.
Calculate its effectiveness also.
37. Calculate the Area density of three different heat exchangers in your heat
transfer lab. Double pipe, shell & tube, and spiral tube heat exchangers.
Discuss their compactness. Also calculate the effectiveness of highest ‘beta’ heat
exchanger with parallel flow arrangement.
38. Plot effectiveness with respect to NTU using three different heat exchangers
(double pipe, shell & tube, and spiral tube) with parallel and counter flow
arrangement for a constant heat capacity ratio. Compare your results with
figure 13.27 of your text book.
39. Calculate the overall heat transfer coefficient (U) of double pipe heat exchanger
with shell & tube heat exchanger in your heat transfer lab. Compare your results
with available data in the literature.
