Sizing Tools Overview
• Exchange Mailbox Analyzer
– Reports on number and size of messages in Exchange at various ages
– Export XML results for import directly into Enterprise Vault Sizing Tool
– Supports Exchange 2000-2019

• File System Analyzer

– Scans Windows Shares and CIFS compliant devices
– Identifies files by size, date, type, and attributes
– Generates HTML, CSV, and graphical reports
– Can report on duplicate items

Sizing Tools Overview – Continued…
• SharePoint Analyzer
– Scans SharePoint Content databases
– Identifies documents by age and type

• Domino Mail File Reporter

– Tool runs in an NSF database
– Scans Domino mail files to report on number, age, and size of messages

• PST Analyzer
– Discover and analyze PST files.
– The analysis reports gives detailed item and attachment counts and sizes as well as estimates on
archived size in Enterprise Vault as well as the impact on Exchange (PST item shortcuts).

Sizing Estimator Tool Walkthrough – Inserting the Data
Depending on the target types
selected, the following data needs
to be added:
• Backlog
• SteadyState
• Journaling Traffic

Sizing Estimator Tool Walkthrough – Viewing the Results
Once all data has been
added, the sizing estimator
will provide:
• The estimated amount of
storage
• The estimated number of
EV servers required

Rule of Thumb Design Guidelines

Rules of Thumb Guidelines – Mailbox Archiving
Calculating Mailbox Archiving “horsepower” Requirements
• 8 CPU Cores with 16GB RAM and optimal disk config can process 50,000 typical
messages/hour
• On average, we’d archive 20 msgs per mailbox per day (typical age-based archive
policy)
• This equates to archiving from 1250 typical mailboxes per hour
• With 6 hours archiving per day, this equates to 7500 typical mailboxes per EV server

Rules of Thumb Guidelines – Mailbox Archiving
Calculating Mailbox Archiving Storage Requirements
• How much is in the Mailbox “backlog”?
– Use Exchange Mailbox Analyzer (EMA) or Domino Mail File Reporter (DMFR)
– Or assumptions (e.g. 70% of current total mailbox sizes)

• Add to that the daily change that will need to be archived:

– How many mailboxes to archive from when in steady-state?
– Where are these mailboxes? Central or remote?
– Do all mailboxes have the same characteristics? Any “light” or “heavy”?
– How many messages per day to archive from each mailbox?
– Average size of these messages? Is it abnormally large/small?
– How much time is available to archive each day? What about the weekend?

Indicative sizing figures for Mailbox Archiving Backlog
Based on a typical mix of messages with and without attachments:
• Storage required for 100GB of Mailbox Archiving “Backlog”
– 46GB Vault Store (i.e. roughly 50% of original size)
– 13GB Indexes (Full level indexing) (i.e. 13% of original size)
– 0.5GB SQL

Rules of Thumb Design Guidelines – File Archiving
• EV 12.0 Performance
Guide says…

• Ranges between
2.4GB/hr and 37GB/hr!
• Use 6GB/hr as “rule of
thumb” for a 8 Core EV
server but consider the
types of data being
archived

Rule of Thumb – General Design Guidelines
• One EV12 server with 8 CPU cores and 16GB RAM can handle between 6,000 and
8,000 mailboxes
• SQL to EV server ratio: Provision 4 CPU cores and 8GB RAM for every 4 EV Servers
• An EV server sized correctly for Mailbox archiving is usually good enough for Journal
Archiving
–Journal Archiving occurs constantly throughout the day
• PST “ingestion” rate is approx. 2GB per hour, per 8 core EV server, 3-4GB per hour
using a 16 core EV server
• Error on the side of caution! Set expectations with customer early.

Design Methodology
• Start simple…
– One Directory, one Vault Site, one EV server, one Vault Store
– Now… why do we need any more?
• Why would we need more?
– Archiving throughput
– WAN challenges
– Administrative/organizational division
– Functional separation: email vs. file
– High availability and/or DR
– Discovery
• End result is usually…
– Number, type, and location of EV and SQL servers
– Required storage for EV Vault Stores, Indexes, and SQL databases
