BORE HOLE PROBLEM

1.Calculate the apparent dip from the given true dip. given true dip amount
1:5 direction to-wards east. find the apparent dip amount along N40E, S70E
and S30E.

2. Calculate the true dip from given apparent dips. given apparent dip1:14
dueN45w and 1:20 due N20E

3. True dip direction is due S30E and apparent dip is 1:10 due S10W. What is
the amount of true dips
N
Given, SCALE
True dip(TD)= 1:5 due E 1 UNIT= 1 CM
To find out,
Apparent dip along
N 40 E = ?
40 °
S 30 E = ?
S 70 E = ?

Solution,
Apparent dip along
N 40 E= 1 : 8 30 °
S 30 E= 1 : 11.5
S 70 E =1 : 6

THREE POINT PROBLEM
1. In the featureless terrain three bore hole A< B and C are sunk to ascertain the attitude of limestone bed. At point
A limestone bed is reached at a depth of 600 ft, C is at 1800 ft due S10 E of A and limestone is reached at a
depth of 400 ft, B is 1500ft due S45 W of A and the limestone is reached here at a depth of 900 ft, determine
the attitude of limestone bed.

2. In a coal seam a number of drill holes were driven to ascertain the structure of the coal bed . Data are a follows

Drilling holes Depth of coal seam Horizontal distance

A 370 ft
B 970 ft 3000 ft due S30 E
C 670 ft 2400 ft due S75E
D 470 ft 1100ft due S40W

Find the attitude of the coal seam.

3. Bore hole were sunk of A, B and C are at the same altitude above mean sea level at the corners of equilateral
triangle which are having sides of 6000ft length . C being west of B, A is north of the mid point between B and
C , a coal seam was encountered at C , depth of 6000 ft in the bore A, 400ft in B , 200 ft in C. Draw a plain
country and determine the attitude of coal seam.

Difference of altitude between

Apparent dip amount two points
= Horizontal distance between
two points
N
We have,
Apparent dip amount= Difference of altitude between two points
Horizontal distance between two points
A(370 ft) So,
W E Apparent dip amount between A & B= 970 ft-370ft = 1 = 1:5 due S30E
3000 ft 5
Similarly,
Apparent dip amount between A & C= 670ft-370ft = 1 = 1:8 due S75E
C (670 fT) 2400 ft 8
D (470 ft) B (970 ft) S 75 E And,
S 40 W S S 30 E Apparent dip between A & D= 470ft- 370 ft = 1 = 1:11 due S45W
1100 ft 11
N
So, SCALE
Attitude of coal seam, 1 UNIT= 1 CM
Strike= N 85 E/ S 85 W
Dip amount = 1 : 5
Dip direction= S 20° E

True thickness= Cos θ * Vertical Thickness (Given)

Q) Three boreholes A, B and C were drilled for limestone reserve
calculation .Bore holes A lies at 600 m distance due N 28 E from bore
holes B. C lies at 400 m die S 10 W from B. The top and bottom of
limestone bed was excavated at the following depth of boreholes.
Calculate the thickness of bed.

Bore Hole Top (m) Bottom( m)

A 200 260

B 220 280

C 240 300
N
A (N 28 E)
SCALE

W 220

Solution,
Attitude of limestone bed strike= N 60 E/ S 60 W
C ( S 10 W) Dip direction= N 30 W

θ = tan [10/(1.6*100)] = 3.57°≈ 4°
S Thickness of limestone bed (T)= Cos θ* VT
= cos (4)* 60
=59.8 m
Q) Three boreholes were drilled to find out stable location for dam
foundation of hydroelectric project. The apparent thickness of quartzite bed
was found 220m. The attitude of quartzite was 220/ 36 NE. Calculate the
true thickness.

Given,
Apparent Thickness= 210 m
Dip amount(θ) = 36° 210 m
Then,
True thickness(TT) = Cos θ* VT
= Cos(36)*210 36°
= 1.69 m

Tan θ = Vertical Thickness
Horizontal Thickness
