Q. Name the three divisions of the Western Coastal Plains and the Eastern Coastal Plains.

A. Western Coastal plain: Gujarat Coast, Konkan Coast, and Malabar Coast.
B. Eastern Coastal Plain: Northern Circars, and the coromandel coast.

2. Q. What are lagoons? Give examples of lagoons in India.

A. Lagoons are shallow water bodies separated from the sea by a natural barrier, like a bar of sand.
Example of lagoons in India: The backwaters of Kerala, Chilika Lake, Pulicat Lake.

3.Q. What is a port? Name three important ports on the east coast and three on the west coast of India.
A. A port is a place by the sea or a river where ships are loaded and unloaded.
Ports on the east coast of India. Kolkata, Vishakhapatnam, Chennai, Puducherry.
Ports on the west coast of India. Kandla, Mumbai, Panaji, Mangalore, Kochi.

1.Q. Describe the Occupations, Culture, Food and Languages of the people living in the Coastal Plains of India.
A.1.OCCUPATIONS: Fishing, shipping, trade, tourism and agriculture are the major occupations. Rice and coconut
are the important agricultural products.
2.CULTURE: People of all faiths live in the Coastal Plains of India. Each part of this region, and each community
has its own traditional clothing, language, food, festivals, dances and art forms.
3.FOOD: Rice, fish, pulses and vegetables are commonly eaten.
4.LANGUAGES: Gujarati-Gujarat, Marathi-Maharashtra, Konkani-Goa, Kannada-Karnataka, Malayalam-Kerala,
Odia-Odisha, Telugu-Andhra Pradesh and Tamil-Tamil Nadu.

Andaman and Nicobar Islands:
1. The Andaman and Nicobar Islands lie in the Bay of Bengal.
2. It is a group of several hundred of Islands.
3. Hunting, fishing and farming are the main occupations.
4. It is a union territory of India. Its capital is Port Blair.
Lakshadweep Islands:
1. The Lakshadweep Islands lie in the Arabian Sea.
2. It is a group of 40 Islands.
3. Agriculture and fishing are the main occupations.
4. It is also a union territory of India. Its capital is Kavaratti.

Eastern Coastal Plain:


1.It lies between the Eastern Ghats and the Bay of Bengal.
2.It covers the states of West Bengal, Odisha, Andhra Pradesh, and Tamil Nadu.
3.It can be divided into Northern Circars and the southern Coromandel Coast.
4.Mahanadi, Godavari, Krishna and Kaveri rivers are flow through the Eastern Coastal Plain.

Western Coastal Plain:


1.It lies between the Western Ghats and the Arabian Sea.
2.It covers the states of Gujarat, Maharashtra, Goa, Karnataka, and Kerala.
3.It can be divided into Gujarat Coast, Konkan Coast, and the Malabar Coast.
4.Several short and swift rivers flow across the Western Coastal Plain.
