2. Course objectives
To understand the key issues in mechatronic system design approaches
 To acquire skill in selection of sensors and transducers for Mechatronic design applications.
 To acquire skill in selection of actuators for Mechatronic design applications.
 To acquire skill in programming micro-processor and programmable controllers.
 To perform Mechatronic design using case studies.
3. Course Description
INTRODUCTION
Mechatronics - Key elements, Mechatronic system design approach and traditional /conventional design, ways
of integrating mechatronic system components (Hardware and software integration), Modeling and simulation
of Mechatronic systems (i.e. Electrical, Electromechanical, thermal & fluid power systems), Simulation
techniques (Model-in-the-loop(MIL), Hardware in the Loop(HIL) and software in the loop(SIL)).
SENSORS AND TRANSDUCERS
Introduction to sensors and transducers, Sensor characteristics/Performance Terminology, Sensor types (Sensors
for motion proximity and position measurement, Velocity, Force, Torque and tactile sensors, flow sensors, fluid
pressure sensors, Temperature sensors, Light sensors, Ultrasonic sensors, Range sensors, Vibration measuring
and control transducers, fiber optic devices in Mechatronics - Sensor selection criteria’s.

ACTUATING DEVICES & AND CONTROL:
Part 1: Actuators
Electrical actuators, Electro-mechanical actuators (DC motors, AC motors, Stepper Motor, stepper motors),
Electro-magnetic actuators (solenoid), Smart material actuators (piezoelectric (PZT), shape memory alloy,
Magneto-strictive actuators), Hydraulic and Pneumatic actuators, actuator characteristics, design and selection
of actuating devices.
Part2: Control
Open & closed loop control systems, Transfer functions of systems, Response of first and second order control
systems to typical test input signals (step, ramp, impulse,), transient and steady state response, transient
response specifications, controllers and control actions (PID controllers).
MICROCONTROLLERS & MICROPROCESSORS IN MECHATRONICS
Introduction, Microcontroller vs Microprocessor, Pin configuration, Instruction set Architecture(ISA), Harvard
& von Neumann Architecture, Registers, CISC & RISC architectures- Programming of Microprocessors,
Interfacing input and output devices - Interfacing D/A converters and A/D converters Applications -
Temperature control - Stepper motor control - Traffic light controller.
PROGRAMMABLE LOGIC CONTROLLERS
Introduction - Basic structure - Input / Output processing - Programming -Mnemonics Timers, Internal relays
and counters - Data handling - Analog input / output, PLC programming and logic systems
APPLICATIONS IN MECHATRONICS
Sensors for condition monitoring, Mechatronic control in Automated manufacturing, Artificial Intelligence, and
Fuzzy Logic applications in Mechatronics, Micro Sensors and Case studies.
DESIGN AND MECHATRONICS
Possible design solutions, Case study on Implementation of mechatronic design approach
4. Assessment and Evaluation
1. Review: 25%
2. Project: 25%.
3. Oral examination: 10%
4. Final Exam: 40%
5. Course Policy
It is required to attend minimum 75% during lecture, 100% during exercise sessions except for unforeseen mishaps.
