ASSIGNMENT NO.

The Gas Burner

DANIELLE ANNE B. MALABED
III PSYCHOLOGY 2
DRAW A BUNSEN BURNER
USE OF EVERY PARTS IN BUNSEN
BURNER
A.

- Barrel or Chimney - It contains the air intake openings

that let air into the burner when uncovered and stop the

entry of air when shut.

- Collar (air regulator) - It can be turned to allow for

more air to enter the burner by revealing air vents or it

can be rotated to occlude them.

- Air Hole - It allows air to enter the Bunsen burner,

where it mixes with the gas.

- Gas Valve - It controls how much natural gas

(methane) is piped to the Bunsen burner.

- Base - It keeps the Bunsen burner stable and remains

cool to allow safe relocation of the instrument during or

after use.

- Rubber Tubing - The gas outlet nozzle on the work

bench where defects or degradation that could lead to

leakage of natural gas or improper seal around the gas

outlet nozzle.
CONTROLLING THE AMOUNT OF
AIR
B.

A. When the air holes are closed the color of the flame

becomes yellow and this is called luminous flame. A

luminous flame is a burning flame which is brightly visible.

This happens because there is less oxygen available.

B. The oxygen. If the air hole is closed there is a shortage

of oxygen. Combustion is incomplete and less energy is

transferred.

C. When the air holes are wide as open the change its

color into blue, luminous, and clean because a complete

combustion occurs with enough air that can mix with the

gas so there is enough oxygen for the gas to react

completely. However its size become shorter and steady.

D. The lampblack or carbon black occur also known as

“soot,” will remain. The incomplete combustion gives us a

relatively cool “luminous” yellow colored flame.

E. Luminous flame burns yellow and its size is longer and

wavy than the blue while the a non-luminous flame burns

blue and its size is shorter than the yellow one.

The desired flame is the non luminous flame because it is

hotter and brighter than the luminous flame which is

more useful to people.

MIXTURE
Make a sketch of non-luminous flame
C.
D.

1. Check connections to burner and desk outlet valve.

2. Close needle valve and collar.

3. Open desk outlet valve fully.

4. Open needle valve 1/2 turn.

5. Use the spark lighter to light the flame.

6. Adjust collar and needle valve till you see a blue

flame.

E.

Do's

Place the Bunsen burner away from any overhead

shelving, equipment or light fixtures by at least 12

inches.

Remove all papers, notebooks, combustible materials

and excess chemicals from the area.

Shut off gas when its use is complete.

Allow the burner to cool before handling.

Ensure that the main gas valve is off before leaving

the laboratory.

Tie-back any long hair, dangling jewelry, or loose

clothing.

Don'ts

Do not leave open flames unattended and never leave

the laboratory while the burner is on.

F.

- The reason why the holes are closed because the gas

will only mix with ambient air at the point of combustion,

that is, only after it has exited the tube at the top. This

reduced mixing produces an incomplete reaction,

producing a cooler but brighter yellow, which is often

called the safety flame or luminous flame.
