Section A
(There are FOUR questions in the section. Answer any THREE)

1. (a) Explain the effect of temperature on the rate of a reaction with a schematic 20
diagram and its related equation.
(b) Discuss your approach to identify the rate law of a typical second order chemical 15
reaction with two types of reactants.

2. (a) Relate and summarize the effect of Gibbs free-energy and entropy on the 20
solubility of a solute in a solution.
(b) How osmotic pressure measurement can be used for the determination of 15
molecular weight of polymers?

3. (a) Draw a schematic diagram of a typical concentration cell and derive the equation 20
of the emf of a concentration cell with the concentration of solutions.
(b) Explain the construction and working principle of fuel cells. 15

4. (a) Introduce the relation of enthalpy, internal energy and pressure-volume work 20
with the chemical changes of a reaction.
(b) (b) Write down the steps for balancing the following redox reaction that takes place 15
in basic solution and identify oxidizing and reducing agents:
MnO4- (aq) + Br- (aq) → MnO2 (aq) + BrO3- (aq)

Section B
(There are FOUR questions in the section. Answer any THREE)

5. (a) Discuss the quantum-mechanical model of an atom (more than one electron 20
system) with electron probability density diagram.
The work function of cesium metal is 3.42×10-19 J. Calculate the minimum
frequency of light required to release electrons from the metal.
(b) What are photons? What role did Einstein’s explanation of the photoelectric 15
effect play in the development of the particle-wave interpretation of the nature of
electromagnetic radiation?

6. (a) What is shielding? Use the penetration effect to explain the difference in relative 20
orbital energies of a 3p and a 3d electron in the same atom.
(b) Explain the relationship between atomic size and reducing strength in Group 1A. 15

7. (a) Determine the shape around each central atom and predict any deviations from 20
ideal bond angles in the following: (i) H2SO4; (ii) propyne (C3H4) (iii) S2F2. Why
peak for asymmetric stretch is at higher wavenumber than symmetric stretch for
CO2 in IR spectrum?
(b) Draw the Lewis structure with lowest formal charges, and determine the charge 15
of each atom in (i) CN-, (ii) ClO- , (iii) ClNO

8. (a) Answer the following based on molecular orbital diagram (MO) and bond order: 20
(i) is O2- stable? (ii) is O2- paramagnetic? (iii) is CN- isolable and (iv) is B2- exist?
(b) What is the orbital hybridization of a central atom that has one lone pair and 15
bonds to: (i) three other atoms; (ii) four other atoms; (iii) five other atoms?
