Experiment
Fitting Shop

Aim
• Objective
✓ Identify and sketch tools in fitting lab used in the household
✓ List the object made from fitting lab at our home
✓ Briefly describing the significance of least count of Vernier Caliper and
working principle of Vernier Caliper
• Machine / Tools used
✓ Bench Vice : Which does the job holding device
✓ Striking Tools : Different types of hammers used (eg. ball peen hammer)
✓ Cutting Tools : Chisel, hacksaw blade, files are important cutting tools
✓ Bench Drill
✓ Measuring and Marking tools : Vernier caliper, Steel rule, dot punch, center
punch, try squares
• Safety measurement tools
✓ Safety goggle
✓ Safety gloves
✓ Safety shoes

Experiment Procedure
Firstly, the raw metal is fitted into the bench vice and the markings are made with the help
of measuring instrument. Then with a hacksaw blade the piece of desired length is cut
In order to make the grove on the metal firstly the corners are marked with dot punch and
again through the hacksaw blade we cut the of the grove. Then with center cut we mark the
portion where we require our drill to work.
After drilling to get the finished product we files to smoothen up the surface of the grove.
Performing the same procedure on the other block we get our fitting lab experiment
product.

Lab Work
Different tools from fitting lab experiment
✓ Hammer
✓ Plier
✓ Hand Hacksaw
Use of Hand Plier
Pliers are used to hold the objects firmly which cannot be directly held by hand due to their
high temperature or due to the risk of getting injured. Like while drilling in fitting shop lab
plier is used to hold the block in place and at the same time to maintain a safe distance from
the drill.

Object identification made with the help of fitting lab

✓ Iron Book shelf structure
✓ Bicycle seat fitting
✓ Jewelry

Processes used in making Bicycle seat fitting

✓ Drilling : To make the cavity in the rod
✓ Filing : To smoothen out the cavity

Vernier Caliper
Significance
Normal scales have a precision of 1 mm. Vernier caliper is a special scale which can have a
precision of less than 1 mm. With the help of Vernier caliper, we can measure the distance
between two points more precisely and with comparatively less error.
It is highly useful in fitting workshop as this lab requires high amount of accuracy in
measurement and markings.

Working Principle of Vernier Caliper

The main scale of the Vernier caliper is further divided and the new scale thus formed is
called as Vernier scale.
Let in a Vernier caliper
9 MSD (Main scale division) = 10 VSD (Vernier scale division)
and we know that least count of a Vernier scale = 1MSD-1VSD
we know that 1MSD is 1mm.
Hence calculating the value of VSD we get to know that the least count of Vernier scale is
0.1mm which was 1 mm for the main scale.
Hence, we can measure more precisely with the help of a Vernier scale.

Limitations of fitting shop

• High amount of wastage of metals as it requires cutting the metal multiple times
hence is an expensive process
• Filing multiple times may lead to undesired dimensions of the object
• Drilling and other processes include high amounts of risks of accidents
• Leads to noise and air Pollution as very fine particles of metal get suspended in the
air
• Time consuming process

Usefulness of fitting lab in electrical engineering (my field of specialization)

• Fitting is used in making the parts of phones, laptops and other electronic devices
• It is used to make the cavities where chips and transistors are inserted
• It is used to make parts of big electrical machines like transformers and generators
• Fitting is also used in making cavities to fit pipes and wires

Conclusion
Through this lab I learnt the following
• The process of fitting
• The tools required in the process
• Working and use of Vernier caliper
• Many day to day objects made from fitting
• Limitations of this workshop
• Usefulness of this workshop in field of electrical engineering
