ELEMENTS AND PRINCIPLES OF ART

The elements and principles of art represent how the artist uses the visual elements to
create an effect and to help convey the artist’s message.

Elements of Art

▪ Vertical lines - are straight up and down lines that are moving in space without any
slant and are perpendicular to horizontal lines. They suggest height and strength
because they extend towards the sky and seem unshakeable.
▪ Horizontal lines - are straight lines parallel to the horizon that move from left to
right. They suggest width, distance, calmness, and stability.
▪ Diagonal lines - are straight lines that slant in any direction except horizontal or
vertical. When in use, they suggest movement or lack of stability.
▪ Zigzag lines - are a series of diagonal lines joined at ends. They can convey action
and excitement, as well as restlessness and anxiety.

5
▪ Curved lines - are lines that bend and change direction gradually. They can be
simply wavy or spiral. Such lines convey the feelings of comfort and ease, as well as
sensual quality as they remind us of the human body.

What is it

Knowing your body composition can help you assess your health and fitness level. Often,
you will measure your body composition at the start of a weight-loss or fitness program
and then check it periodically to monitor your progress.
Body Mass Index (BMI) is a measurement of a person’s weight over his or her height. It
is more of an indicator than a direct measurement of a person’s total body fat.

Physical Fitness Test is a set of measures designed to determine a student’s level of

physical fitness. It is intended to test two categories of physical fitness commonly
referred to as “health-related” and “skill- related. Health-related components refer to
those physical attributes which enable a person to cope with the requirements of daily
living such as cardio-vascular endurance or stamina, muscular strength, and
endurance, flexibility, and the appropriate body mass index (BMI). Skill-related
components are physical abilities that show potential for good performance in certain
skills (usually in sports) like running speed, agility, reaction time or quickness, balance,
and coordination.

Health-Related Fitness components focus on factors that promote optimum health and
prevent the onset of disease and problems associated with inactivity.

BODY COMPOSITION – is the body’s relative amount of fat to fat-free mass.

Body Mass Index (BMI) - Is a person’s weight in kilograms divided by the square of
height in meters.

Weight – the heaviness or lightness of a person.

Height – the distance between the feet on the floor to the top of the head in standing
position.

FORMULA FOR COMPUTING BODY MASS INDEX

What is it

Traditional music of Indonesian tribes often uses percussion instruments. Some of them
developed elaborate and distinctive musical instruments such as the complex and
sophisticated gamelan orchestra of Java and Bali. Indonesia is the home of gong chimes
which are ordinarily place in order of pitch with the boss upward on cords held in a low
wooden frame that can be rectangular or circular.

Instrumental Ensemble:
Gamelan is the Indonesian’s most popular
and well-known form of music. It is their
traditional orchestra. The word “gamelan”
came from the Javanese words gamel

two major parts, the Javanese, and the
Balinese music. The musical characteristics
of Javanese music is usually used for court
ceremonies and it is more on percussion

In Balinese, sacred music is used, percussion instruments are more on metallophones
and gongs with some auxiliary instruments like cymbals producing a brilliant sound.

members. The players sit on the floor barefoot when playing the instruments. The major
function of gamelan is to perform for traditional occasions and ceremonies.
Instrumental music serves as the accompaniment of their religious activities, rituals,
theatres, and dances.

FABRICS and TEXTILES of SOUTHEAST ASIA

The Southeast Asian region contains a treasure trove of the most stunning hand-woven
textiles and fabrics found anywhere in the world. Weaving involves the production of
fabric or cloth by interlacing two distinct sets of yarns or threads in a right angle. The
(usually pulled taut) vertical strings are called the warp, and the horizontal thread that
is intertwined over and under them is called the weft.

THAI SILK
Thai silk is produced from the cocoons of Thai silkworms.
It is mainly produced in Khorat which is the center of the
silk industry in Thailand. Thailand's Agriculture Ministry
uses a peacock emblem to authenticate Thai silk and to
protect it from imitations.

SILK WEAVING – CAMBODIA
Silk weaving in Cambodia were used for trading
during Angkorian times. Weavers often depicting
Khmer tales, scenes from Angkor Wat, and the life
of Lord Buddha. They produce a style of intricately
patterned and dyed silk called “Kha Bang Neang
Sok Kra Ob.” Krama is the traditional check
scarves made of cotton.
Two main types of Cambodian weaving:
▪ Ikat technique (Khmer term: chongkiet)- to create patterns, weavers tie and dye
portions of weft yarn before weaving begins.
▪ Uneven twill – it yields single or two-color fabrics, which are produced by weaving
three threads so that the color of one thread dominates on one side of the fabric,
while the two others determine the color on the reverse side.

TEXTILE WEAVING - LAOS

Traditionally, weaving was done within the household for personal use only. Cotton was
used for everyday clothing and home wares; silk was used for rituals, like weddings,
spiritual events, and funerals, for visits and gifts to the temples, and for special textiles
within the home. Weavers’ uses standing loom and backstop loom in weaving the
threads. Elephant is an important motif of Laos textile because of its role in the history
of Lao and thought to have rain bearing power.

INDONESIA, MALAYSIA, SINGAPORE AND
BRUNEI’S BATIK

The fabric most common to both countries is the

batik. The term “batik” is an Indonesian-Malay
word, believed to be related to the Malay word
“titik,” which means “point,” “dot,” or “drop.” The https://images.app.goo.gl/vV74XbwcoB3

“drop” action refers to the process of dyeing the
fabric by making use of a resist technique:
covering areas of cloth with a dye-resistant
substance (usually hot wax) to prevent them from
absorbing colors.

Two Categories of Batik Designs: https://images.app.goo.gl/2WfD1Pzrm7LaHGj58

1. Free Form Design - the design depends 2. Geometric Motifs -patterns were

Two Main Types of Batik:

Block printed - done by welding together
Hand painted - the artist uses the strips of metal to form a metal block. The

Batik is commonly used by Indonesians in various rituals, traditions, and celebrations.

Infants are carried in batik slings designed to bring luck while the dead are covered in
"funerary batik." It is made by drawing dots and lines of the resist with a spouted tool
called a canting and prints the resist with a copper stamp called a cap. Malaysian batiks
depicting animals are rare because Islam norms forbid animal images as decoration.
Artisans are known for their hand-drawn designs, a technique known as batik tulis. An
alternate technique called batik cap relies on stamps, often made of copper, a faster
process that makes for more regular patterns.

Brunei's traditional batik is incorporated with their national flower simpur, sumboi-
sumboi (pitcher plant), and Brunei's traditional design of air muleh. Hand-made batik
designs are created through the art of layering and mixing of colors injected with
creativity. Batik can be done in four different ways; hand-drawn, using metal blocks;
screen printing; and digital printing.

What I Can Do
SIMPLE PAPER WEAVING PATTERN

Materials Needed:
Colored paper (as many colors as you like), Ruler, Pencil, Tape and Scissors

Procedure:
Step 1: Pick the colored papers you desire to use in our weaving activity. Consume the
colored papers by creating vertical lines that measures half an inch. Cut the
drawn vertical lines into strips using a scissor.

Step 2: To create your loom, align the stripes along to the paper and tape at the top to
secure.
Step 3: Take the first strip. Weave the strip across in an over and under manner until
you finish the first row.

Step 4: Take the second strip with the same color as the first strip. This time, weave the
strip in an under and over manner until you finish the second row.
Step 5: Repeat the step 3 and step 4 until you finish to fill the whole loom. If you would
notice, this pattern is just a plain weave.
Step 6: Final Product. You may leave it as it is, or you may remove it from the back
sheet.
You can also transfer and glue your final product in a card board if you desire to
post it on your walls as a house decoration.

Lesson Health-Related Fitness: Cardiovascular

1 Endurance

• Undertakes physical activity and physical fitness assessments.

• Sets goals based on assessment results.

One of the important components of health-related fitness is

cardiovascular endurance or also known as cardiorespiratory fitness.
The more efficient your body supplies oxygen to its tissues, the lower
your breathing rate is.
To enable an optimal supply of oxygen to the working muscles,
the person needs to train or participate in activities that will build up the
energy stores needed for sport or any physical activities. Your resting
heart rate is a reliable indicator of cardiovascular endurance and the
baseline measurement for monitoring your workout or any physical
activities. Once you know your resting heart rate, it's time to build or
plan an exercise routine.

What’s New
Your heart is one of the most powerful muscle in your body.
It pumps blood around your body to keep you alive. It shows
how healthy you are. Your pulse rate is worked out on how
many times your heart beats (or pumps) per minute.
The best to take your resting pulse rates before you get out
of bed in the morning. The average person’s resting pulse is
72 beats per minute. People that are very fit can go down to
40 beats per minute. Unfit people can go up to 100 beats per
minute. Active pulse rates are taken after exercise. Your level
of fitness is measured by how quickly your pulse rate returns
to normal.
1. Look for a partner (family member, relatives, or a friend) for this activity.
2. Help each other take your resting pulse rate.
3. Do a warm-up you’ve learn from the previous lesson then after that get your
active pulse rate.
4. After a couple of minute take again your resting pulse rate.

How quickly did you recover? If your pulse rate returned to normal after one minute, it
means that you are fit. If it took two minutes, then you know you can get fitter. Fitter
means healthier too.

Now that you have an idea of how fit your heart is, you can make up a mini fitness
routine to do. An effective workout or physical activity is a balance between frequency,
intensity, type, and time (FITT). FITT principles will help you manage your fitness plan,
but always listen to your body to achieve an appropriate balance.

Today more of Thai melodies are dedicated to children. The songs are about nature and

exercises/workouts like Zumba, hip-hop aerobics, Latin, etc. that can be accessed
through the internet. Watch the video using the link below. Study and execute the
routine with your family. Read and answer the questions below based on your

What is it

What is aerobic exercise?

Aerobics is described as a vigorous activity designed to strengthen the lungs and
the heart. The word aerobics came from the Greek word aero which means air, and bios
which refers to life. Aerobics aims to improve the elements of fitness such as flexibility,
muscular strength, and cardiovascular fitness.
Aerobics exercise consists of a mixture of fundamental movements -dance steps
and stretching exercises. Routines are developed and synchronized to a music that has
a definite and rhythmic beat.

What is step aerobics?

Step aerobics incorporates benches
and evolved from the need to provide
exercises with another type of low-impact
activity that is both interesting and
challenging. The height of the step depends
on the experience, skill, and fitness level of
the person.
People with healthy knees should
never allow the knee joints to exceed 90
degrees when they are executing the
different basic moves of the step aerobics. They should avoid knee movements exceeding
60 degrees when they are flexing or bending to avoid knee problems.

Step aerobics has all the benefits of a high-intensity cardio workout without
putting stress on your joints. It improves overall fitness by building strength, reducing
fat, and boosting your cardiovascular health.

PHYSICAL EDUCATION

Lesson
Health-Related Fitness: Flexibility
1

• Undertakes physical activity and physical fitness assessments.

• Sets goals based on assessment results.
• Conducts physical activity and physical fitness assessments of
family/school peers and;
• Monitors periodically one’s progress towards the fitness goals.

You probably know what it means to be flexible. It usually means

that someone can stretch a part of their body. But flexibility is not just
being able to stretch. According to the U.S. Surgeon General's report on
physical activity and health, flexibility is defined as "a health-related
component of physical fitness that relates to the range of motion available
at a joint."

What I Know

Fill in the blanks with the appropriate word/s to complete the statement. Write your
answer in the space provided.

1. _____________ is the ability of the joints and muscles to move through its full
range of motion.
2. Increasing flexibility is most effectively achieved through _____________.

3. _____________ measures the flexibility shoulder girdle.

4. The most important areas in which to maintain flexibility are the neck,
shoulders, _____________, chest, and hips.
5. A _____________ focuses on actions like the movements you'll do while you work
out.

8
What’s In

Look at each picture carefully. Put a checkmark ( ) if the picture shows flexibility.

What’s New

Try reaching your toes using both of your hands while sitting and standing without
bending your knees then answer the question written below.

Did you find it difficult or easy to execute? Why or why not?

_____________________________________________________________________________________
_____________________________________________________________________________________
_____________________________________________________________________________________

What is it

Flexibility is the ability of the joints and muscles to

move through its full range of motion. It also refers to
the mobility of your muscles, which allows for more
movement around the joints. Range of motion is the
distance and direction your joints can move, while
mobility is the ability to move without restriction.

9
Flexibility depends on many factors, including age, gender, body fat/muscle mass
ratio, and exercises done to enhance flexibility. Females tend to be more flexible than
males, because of their body composition (body fat to muscle mass ratio). The older
people get, the less flexible they become, because joint mobility decreases. The more a
joint is used, the more flexible it will become.
Increasing flexibility is most effectively achieved through stretching. Stretching
lengthens the muscles. The most important areas in which to maintain flexibility are
the neck, shoulders, hamstring muscles (back of the upper leg), chest, and hips. It is
important never to stretch a cold muscle. Always warm up with some light activity before
stretching. In addition, never bounce when stretching, and don't stretch to the point of
pain.

What I Can Do

Follow the proper procedures on how to conduct sit-and-reach and zipper test. Do the
flexibility test for two (2) trials. Record the result in your physical fitness score card
located in Module 1.

A. Sit and Reach

apart.
b. Interlock thumbs and position the tip of the fingers on the floor without bending
the elbows.
c. Alter the partner has positioned the zero point of the tape measure/meter stick,
(at the top of the middle fingers), the tester starts the test by sliding the hands
slowly forward without jerking, trying to reach the farthest distance possible
without bending the knees.
d. Bouncing or jerking movement is not allowed.
e. Do it twice.

For your partner:

a. As the tester assumes the (b) procedure, position the zero point of the tape
measure at the tip of the middle fingers of the tester.
b. See to it that the knees are not bent as the performer slides the farthest distance
that he could.

B. Zipper Test

Purpose —to test the flexibility of the shoulder girdle.

Equipment
Ruler
Procedure

For you:

a. Stand erect.
b. Raise your right arm, bend your elbow, and reach down across your back as far
as possible, to test the right shoulder; extend your left arm down and behind
your back, bend your elbow up across your back, and try to reach/cross your
fingers over those of your right hand as if to pull a zipper or scratch between the
shoulder blades.
c. Repeat procedures a and b with the left hand over the left shoulder to test the
left shoulder.
For your partner:

a. Observe whether the fingers touched or overlapped each other, if not, measure
the gap between the middle fingers of both hands.
b. Record the distance in centimeter.

Scoring — record zipper test to the nearest 0.1 centimeter.

SCORE STANDARD INTERPRETATION

5 Fingers overlapped by 6 cm. and above Excellent

What is it

Family Health:
“a state of positive interaction between family members
which enables each member of the family to enjoy optimum
physical, mental, social and spiritual well-being.”

A family provides its members with key resources for healthful living, including food,
clothing, shelter, a sense of self-worth, and access to medical care. Further, family
health is a socio-economic process whereby the health of family members is
mentioned.
Functions of the family
➢ Socialization of family members
➢ Economic stability
➢ Provide sense of identity
➢ Care of dependent members
➢ Socialization of family members
➢ Emotional support for members
➢ Teaches children rules for behavior and socially approved conduct
➢ Satisfy social, emotional, psychological, and intellectual needs of
members
Family is the foundation of your whole being. It is one of the factors that determine
your values as a person. This can help you identify and strengthen your own identity
and sexuality. There are things that a family views differently among others. This
makes each family unique. Here are some of the determinants of how a family can
differ from each other:

Determinants of Family Health

➢ Gender
➢ Cultural factors ➢ Psycho-social environment
➢ Living and working conditions
➢ Health Practices
➢ Physical Environment ➢ Education and economic
factors

Scopes to be considered to have a smooth sailing relationship in the family.

1. The problems faced by the family. The family should talk about the problems openly
and learn to respect the opinion of each other.

2. Reproductive health of not only the parents but all the members of the family. Open
the communication about reproductive health to properly address, handle and
prevent these kinds of situations from happening. Child health should also be a
priority of the family, parents should emphasize the child’s safety and welfare.

3. Mental Health should be taken more seriously to avoid mental illnesses and
disorders in the future. Communication, honesty, respect, and freedom of
expression should be practiced at home to ensure a healthy mentality.

14
4. Gender concerning issues should be raised and talked about openly in a family.
This gives the family members assurance and safety at home. They are less likely
to hide and will be given peace of mind.

These scopes can affect one’s sexuality. If these scopes are not met and considered
it may lead to confusion and misconceptions. A family needs to guide the members
in discovering his/her identity and sexuality.

What I Can Do

Read and reflect on the article below and answer the questions that follow.

LOVE IN ACTION
. By: Teofilo Guiang Jr.
Former Secretary of Bangko Central ng Pilipinas
“I am now 67 years old. And many times, I find myself seated on an old bench
in front of our sari-sari store where I could have a clear view of schoolchildren and
office workers end route to different places. I’m glad I don’t have to endure the rigors
of rushing things anymore like waking up early in the morning, fixing myself orderly
and neat, having breakfast hurriedly and trying to beat other people rushing for seat
in a passenger jeepney bound for the office. Among the lifetime of things remembered
is this one which occupies my mind when I’m lonely. The fourth commandment says:
“Honor your father and mother.” I have no parents anymore for death had caught up
with them some years ago.

During the remaining days of my mom, she and dad stayed with us at Quezon
City. I was then very involved in office work and Church activities, not fully aware that
I was spending little time with mom and dad. Mom was practically blind for she had
been sick of eye disease called glaucoma for 18 long years. Indeed, those were trying
times for us in the family. I can still picture in my mind how dad would wash the face
of mom, how he would comb her hair, how he would tell her an interesting story, how
he would give her the prescribed medicines on schedule and how he would strum his
old guitar as he sang a sweet kundiman for her. Dad was the ever patient and
competent “nurse” of mom. No doubt, he was a model husband and father.

15
Then the unexpected thing came. Mom was hospitalized. She was in her sick
bed and comatose. Surprisingly, there were moments when she would repeatedly utter
the words: “Ang anak kong bunso hindi ako mahal.” I was somewhat disturbed for
she was referring to me. When I went home that night, I tried to find out why she
uttered those words.
Perhaps the nice little things I’ve done for her like giving her money for her
medicines and talking to her in her room were not enough to make her feel the warmth
of my love for her. I should have spent more quality time with her. I should have talked
to her more often. And I should have brought her somewhere for recreation more
often. Later, when mom regained full consciousness, I did exactly what my dad and
two brothers did for her with loving care. I massaged her arms tenderly, fixed her
silvery hair in place with my hands and told her some petty jokes that made her
chuckle. From that time on until she expired peacefully, she didn’t utter anymore the
words: “Ang anak kong bunso hindi ako mahal.”
Then I came to realize fully that love expression in words is not enough. It must
also be expressed in action.

Guide questions:
1. Is expressing love through words enough to make someone feel loved? Why?
