B. Background information for learners

Learning the different tools, utensils, equipment and their uses is important to make the process and
preservation easier and more efficient. Time, money and effort will be saved if you know its  functions. You
can have a best product and you can able to process a food in its best quality.
Tools, utensils and equipment contribute to the success of food preservation and processing.

Basic Tools and Utensils Used for Good Preservation and Processing

1. Apple Corer- is used to take off the core and pips from apple and other fruits.

2. Baster- is used to drizzle juice or liquid from meat.

3. Basting Brush- is used for spreading juice or liquid on meat, so it does not dry

up and adds flavor.

4. Bowl– is used to serve or mix ingredients.

5. Cheesecloth – is used for making and wrapping cheese.


6. Containers – different sizes and types like plastic bins with airtight lids,

ceramic bowls with plastics lids, and glass jars are essential to store food

7. Colander – is used for draining liquid from food.

8. Meat grinder- is used to mince and puree meat.

9. Melon baller- is used to make balls from melon and other fruits.

10. Sieve- is used to sift and strain.
