LEARNING COMPETENCY:
● discusses the concept that technology is an effective and vibrant tool for empowering
a person to express his/her ideas, goals, and advocacies, which elicits immediate
action (A10PL-IIh-1);
● explains the role or function of artworks by evaluating their utilization and combination
of art elements and principles (A10PL-IIh-2); and
● explains the influence of technology in the 21st century on the evolution of various
forms of art. (A10PR-IIc-e-2)
ARTICLE:
Technology-based art requires computer-generated and/or manipulated. Traditional
artworks need paint brushes and colors to create a masterpiece. Today’s generation however
kept the artistic idea of making art, however, gadgets are essential and play a vital role in the
world of art. Computer programs and applications expanded even in the production of art.
Computer or digital art emerged in the early 1960s. Because technology was
extremely developing, another dimension of artistic expression was awakened. Early
experimenters such as engineers, scientists, and mathematicians were the first people to
have access to the hardware needed. They saw the potential of another artistic creation using
computers. Geometrical forms and repetitive patterns frequently appear in the different art
works. They incorporated the traditional subjects such as human figures, landscapes,
animals, and still life in the new trend of art.
Political views, Social and cultural issues were expressed in the works of the different
artists. Also, they advocate the causes that are critical to modern life such as the environment
and climate change. Other artists even explore the philosophical relationship between
science and technology and the arts.
In this world that offers us the many advantages of technology, specifically gadgets
such as laptops, desktops, mobile phones, and tablets, we are moving to a planet that
exploits their functions - that is for faster and more efficient production, communication and
even self-expression through digital art. With such gadgets available to everyone, we can
capture images and edit them on our own. In this manner, we can be all digital artists in our
own rights.
Technology stretched its function in one’s artistic expression. One can capture
images like selfies, animals, places, or events. These are remarkable images that are worth
sharing to the world. Mobile phones for instance are very essential also in making school
projects, research, and even navigation and online shopping. The power of the mobile phone
now can incorporate animated images, texts, sound, and music.
One advantage of technology-based art is having the ability to enhance and edit
existing photos or original pictures. The artist may not use traditional color palette, canvas
and paintbrush but he can perform cropping, retouching, putting special effects and many
more. However, the artist needs an application that could do the job. Applications for photo
editing are free to download in the App Store of your mobile phone.
Here are some familiar photo editing applications.
● Pixelmator Photo: Pro Editor
● PicsArt Photo & Video Editor
● Photoshop Express Photo Editor
● Photo Editor
● Magic Eraser Background Editor
● PhotoGrid- Pic Collage Maker
● Adobe Lightroom Photo Editor
Each of the applications has its own special features, from changing color,
background, hue, layout, cropping. Other applications offer animations. It can animate your
still life photos and make them more interesting and fun to look at. Further, these applications
have the ability to transform pictures to look like paintings; form watercolor, to oil and even
collage.
