Air cargo transportation drives economic and social growth, supports and
accelerates global trade, with an estimate of 35% of value of global trade.
JKIA is considered the regional hub for air transport and a number of carriers call
on Nairobi for passenger and cargo traffic. It is also the second fastest growing
airport in the world cargo ranking.
Cargo marketing and business development activities at JKIA revolve around
providing support to and strengthening operation of the Transit Sheds, the Animal
Handling Station, Specialized Freighter Area Operators, Courier operators, Cargo
airlines, Cargo ramp handling, Clearing and Forwarding companies all playing a
key role in the freight export/import process at all our airports.
EXECUTIVE SUMMARY
This report is based on the twelve-week industrial attachment that I successfully

according to the requirements of the school in partial fulfillment of my diploma
course Air Cargo Management, East African school of Aviation. During this period,
I have undertaken various tasks and responsibilities through observation and
practical. Among the practical activities that I have been involved in all along are:
1. Receiving and recording cargo reports from transit sheds and
representation of the same on Microsoft excel.
2. Customer service
3. Receiving and making office calls.
4. Operation of office machines e.g. computer, printer and scanner.
5. Collection of data from animal holding station and calculating their charges.
6. Issuing lease contracts to tenant.
7. Input of data entry from transit sheds.
Activities carried out through observation are among the following:
1. Observation of loading and offloading of cargo from various aircrafts at the
airside.
2. Observation of various process at the KQ export whereby the cargo to be
shipped is first weighed on arrival .The next step is the collection of
handling and airfreight charges then issuance of cargo manifest and lastly
screening then the cargo is stored in the warehouse awaiting loading.
3. Clearing process of imported goods at Signon
whereby the cargo is received by the transit shed and the manifest is
lodged into the system to prepare a release order afterwards the clearing
agent collects the release order, lodges custom entry then does payment of
taxes and handling charges then delivers consignment.
3RD WEEK I visited Kenya Airways export zone and saw how
different cargo is being transported for loading
e.g. HUM how it is weighed on arrival and
screened then stored awaiting loading.
I visited the airside and learnt about access
control and security.
I was given an estimate of how much weights of
cargo can be loaded on certain aircrafts.
I was shown the cargo handling machines and
explained to all their functions.
I also learned about the export and imports of live
animals and the documents required for
transportation and the storage facility at the
animal handling station.
I learned conceptual skills through exposure of
the airside and the transit shed.
9TH WEEK I visited the Kenya airways cargo export zone and

the cargo manifest is done and the cargo is ready
for uplift.
I did operations of office machines such as
printing and scanning documents and receiving

documents to ensure shipment may be carried.
Obtaining capacity for the carrier’s flight.
Preparing a cargo manifest and forwarding
applicable copies of the manifest and airway bill
to the carrier. Providing the load unit with special
load notification and finally notify consignee of
arrival of shipments.
CHAPTER TWO: IMPACT OF ATTACHMENT
Being an attaché at Kenya Airports Authority has given me the real
picture in relation with the knowledge acquired in class about Air Cargo
Management. I therefore appreciate the theory concept I learnt at
school which made it very easy to understand and interpret the
practical work at the airside.
The tasks assigned during my attachment played a major role in both
my school and career life. It has increased my knowledge base and will
shape me to become a valuable resource in a company. The skills I have
gotten from my stay at Kenya Airports Authority will also be very vital in
my professional development.
Socially, I was able to learn acceptable professional ethics and how to
relate with people around the work environment.
