Advantages of Bus Topology:

It is easy to handle and implement.

It is best suited for small networks.
 Easy to install.
 Cheaper than other topologies (But in recent years has become less important due to devices like
a switch, TP Link)
 Cost effective; only a single cable is used.
 Easy identification of cable faults.
 Reduced weight due to fewer wires.

Disadvantages of Bus Topology:

This network topology can perform well only for a limited number of nodes.
 Limited cable length and number of stations.
 If there is a problem with the cable, the entire network breaks down.
 Maintenance costs may be higher in the long run.
 Proper termination is required (loop must be in closed path).
 Significant Capacitive Load (each bus transaction must be able to stretch to most distant link).
 It works best with limited number of nodes.
 Commonly has a slower data transfer rate than other topologies.
 Only one packet can remain on the bus during one clock pulse.

Advantage of Ring Topology:

 The data being transmitted between two nodes passes through all the intermediate nodes. A
central server is not required for the management of this topology.
 It is relatively easy to install and reconfigure.
 Easy to identify the problem if the entire network shuts down.

Disadvantages of Ring Topology:

The failure of a single node of the network can cause the entire network to fail.
The movement or changes made to network nodes affects the performance of the entire network.
Only one machine can transmit on the network at a time.

Advantage of Mesh Topology:

Eliminates traffic problems in links sharing.
 If one link becomes unusable, it does not incapacitate the entire system. Thus, act as
robust.
 It has privacy and security.
 Point-to-point link make fault identification and fault isolation easy.

Disadvantage of Mesh Topology:

The arrangement wherein every network node is connected to every other node of the network, many of
the connections serve no major purpose. This leads to the redundancy of many of the network
connections.
 Installation and reconnection are difficult.
 The hardware required to connect each link (I/O ports and cable) is expensive.
 It is generally too costly and complex for practical networks.

Star Topology

Advantages of Star Topology

Due to its centralized nature, the topology offers simplicity of operation.
It also achieves an isolation of each device in the network.
 Easy to install and reconfigure.
 No disruptions to the network when connecting or removing devices.
 Easy to detect faults and to remove parts.
 Less expensive.
 Includes robustness, that is, if one link fails, only that link is affected, other links remain
active.

Disadvantage of Star Topology

The network operation depends on the functioning of the central hub. Hence, the failure of the central
hub leads to the failure of the entire network.
 If the hub fails, the whole system is dead.
 If the hub, switch, or concentrator fails, nodes attached are disabled.
 Requires more cable length than a bus topology.
 More expensive than bus topologies because of the cost of the hubs, etc.

Advantages of a Tree Topology

 Point-to-point wiring for individual segments.
 Supported by several hardware and software venders.
Disadvantages of a Tree Topology
 Overall length of each segment is limited by the type of cabling used.
 If the backbone line breaks, the entire segment goes down.
 More difficult to configure and wire than other topologies.

Advantages of a Hybrid Topology

· It provides a better result by it.
· It can be designed in many ways for various purposes.
Disadvantages of Hybrid Topology
· It is costly.
 Difficult to identify the problem if the entire network shuts down.
