Summary of unit 2
The topics we covered in this unit were: Countables and uncountables, Some tips to learn
English faster, the use of there is and there are, and some quantifiers.
Countables and uncountables:
All nouns are countable or uncountable. The difference between countable and
uncountable nouns is very simple: countable nouns have a plural form and can be
counted, while uncountable nouns cannot.
Countable and uncountable nouns are combined with different words. If we find a
Word preceded by another that is only combined with innumerable.
• They only go with accountants: a/an, few, fewer, many, several.
• They only go with uncountables: little, less, least, much.
Countable nouns:
Most nouns in English are countable, meaning they have a singular form and a
plural form, and you can talk about how many there are. In the singular they are
used with an article (a, an or the [un/a o el/la]). Regular plurals are formed simply
by adding an "-s".
Uncountable nouns
Uncountable nouns (as the name suggests) are those that cannot be counted. Some
common uncountable nouns are entities such as information, water, and furniture, or
abstract nouns, such as happiness or anger. These nouns cannot be used with
numbers and are used without an article.
Quantifiers
Quantifiers indicate the number of people, animals, or things. They are answers to
the question "How many?". Like articles, quantifiers define a noun and are always
placed before the noun. Some can be used only with countable nouns, others only
with uncountable nouns, and others with both.
