Set-Up and Installation for Filter Press


Coming Off of the Truck
1. Upon arrival, check system for any damage that might have occurred during shipping and make
sure that hydraulic pump and cylinder are not leaking before loading off of the truck.

2. DO NOT place any pressure on the hydraulic cylinder, plumbing or pump when unloading filter
press.

3. When setting filter press down with fork lift or crane, be sure to set down gently so as not to jar or
violently bounce the filter press. This may cause damage to hydraulic cylinder.

4. Place on clean dry level surface capable of handling filter press weight and pressure.

5. If bolting into concrete pad, be sure to bolt down when filter press is under pressure to insure that
sidebars are square with the end plates.

Installing Filter Press


1. Plumb feed valve to feed pump in appropriate plumbing materials.

2. Plumb corner returns to appropriate drain or holding tank

a. (CAUTION: FILTERED SOLUTION MAY BE HAZARDOUS.)

b. Filter press drains out of corner discharge.

3. Do not plumb filtrate return line above filter press without using a check valve. This is to prevent
remaining filtrate in plumbing from gravity draining back into filter press.

FILTER PRESS CYCLE

1. To close cylinder, verify that air valve is open and regulator is set to appropriate pressure

2. Push switch forward to activate hydraulic pump. Automatic hydraulic pumps will stop pumping
when maximum hydraulic setting is reached.

a. Consult Factory Before Adjusting Hydraulic Pump.

3. If filter press leaks, increase hydraulic pressure up to 4300 PSI maximum. Adjust hydraulic
pressure by adjusting air regulator.

4. Once filter press is closed, open feed valve and all corner return valves.

5. Start pump to begin feeding filter press.

6. After filter press is full with dried cake, begin squeeze cycle (See next section on membrane filter
operation)

7. To open press, pull switch backwards to return hydraulic fluid.

8. Slide plates and knock out mash with spatula.

9. Before sliding plates closed for the next filter press cycle, wipe off flat sealing area on plates and
line up plates.

MEMBRANE FILTER PRESS CYCLE

1. Walk along the side of the filter press and push all plates so that they are up against the feed
plate and the holes line up.

2. Turn air on and open Hydraulic valve. This will start the hydraulic pressure of closing the press.
The pump will automatically stall at the pressure indicated by the pressure on the hydraulic pump.
We recommend setting the pressure at 3200 psi (32 psi air pressure). If the filter press leaks, turn
up the pressure in the hydraulic pump by increasing the air pressure to the pump. Pump has a
maximum pressure of 4300 psi where high pressure blow by starts.

3. Now you are ready to start pumping in mash. Before pumping begins, turn the valves for the feed
and return pipes to the open position.

4. Turn on your diaphragm pump to a low pressure. We recommend starting at 25 psi when you turn
the pump on. This will slowly start the filling press process. Once your diaphragm pump starts to
slow, you can increase the pressure. We recommend increasing the pressure multiple times
before you get to full pressure, up to 100 psi. You will know the press is at capacity and ready for
squeeze cycle when the pump strokes are between 45-60 seconds. The filter press is ready for
the squeeze cycle at this point.

5. Close the feed pipe valve. Running of the squeeze process with empty chambers can
damage the membranes.

6. Refer to drawing and information on squeeze system for valve open and close process.

7. During the squeeze cycle, water will flow from the pipe at the bottom of the tank through the
pump, then the pipe manifold into the membrane chambers. The water fills the chambers and
pushes the membrane to squeeze more liquid out of the mash. When the squeeze is done,
reverse the valves and allow the water to be sucked out of the plates back into the water tank.

8. After all of the water has been sucked out of the membrane chambers, it is safe to open the
plates, remove solid mash and clean the filter cloths.

9. To open the press, turn the hydraulic pump to the retreat position. The pump will stall out when
the pusher plate is completely back and no pressure is on the filter plates.

10. Once pressure is removed, you may index the plates to check for damage, cloth wear and remove
solids with the spatula.

11. After scraping the mash solids off the cloths, check and make sure all cloths are still properly
attached and in place. Push the plates evenly forward and close the hydraulic system. This will
move the pusher plate forward and pressurize the filter press. Once this is complete, you will be
ready for a new cycle.

Filter Cloth Maintenance

Non-Gasketed Filter Press Cloth Installation

With this type plate, the filter cloth provides the seal between plates, and no gasket material is used.
With the non-gasketed plate design minimal leaking may occur, but can be contained with a dumpster
or drip pan.

To Remove Filter Cloth

1. Use diagonal cutters or snips to cut ties (if supplied) on vertical sides.

2. Lift one cloth side off of cloth pins on top of plate.

3. Fold cloth and push through center eye.

To Install New Filter Cloth

1. Fold and roll cloth on one side into a small section so that it can be inserted through the
corner feed hole.

2. Once the cloth is pulled through, it can be unfolded and installed over the cloth pins on top of
plate.

3. If supplied with holes and/or grommets along vertical sides of filter cloth, use small plastic wire
ties to secure cloth to itself and therefore tight against the plate.

Filter Cloth Washing

Filter cloths provided with the filter press have been selected specifically for use on each particular
application. Proper care and maintenance of the filter cloths are important to the performance of the
filter press. During filtration, the filter cloth is the initial barrier that separates solids from liquid.
Therefore, the filter cloth must remain porous to provide high filtration rates.

During normal operation the filter cloth may gradually become plugged with microscopic particles.
These particles penetrate the cloth and become lodged in the depth of the weave, which leads to
decreased filterability. These particles must be removed periodically to maintain high filtration rates
and drier cakes.

Filter cloth washing is required when one of the following factors indicate plugging has occurred.
1. Initial high filtration pressure
2. Long filtration cycles.
3. Wet filter cakes

There are several methods used to wash cloths while they are still installed in the press. The most
commonly used method is a CIP solution run though the chambers and piping of the press. Contact
factory for more information.

Another method used for cloth washing is a portable high-pressure (800-1200 PSI at 2-10 GPM) cold
water spray unit. These units come with a hand held power wand with spray nozzle, which is slowly
moved over the cloths. This method cleans by not only flushing off the cloth surfaces but by also
penetrating the cloth to flush particles out of the depth of the weave. Contact Micropure for more
