MECHANISM|

there are 6 simple machines : lever, inclined, screw , wheel, wedge, pulley

How does a lever mechanism work?

The lever is a movable bar that pivots on a fixed point. The lever operates when you apply forces at
different distances from the fixed point (fulcrum). As the lever rotates around the fixed point, the point
farther away from the fulcrum will move faster.

examples

pliers, door handles, pry bars, staplers, and wheelbarrows.

How does Incline mechanism work ?

inclined plane, simple machine consisting of a sloping surface. The force required to move an object up
the incline is less than the weight being raised, discounting friction. The steeper the slope, or incline, the
more nearly the required force approaches the actual weight.

Examples
ramp used to load goods into a truck, to a person walking up a pedestrian ramp, to an automobile or
railroad train climbing a grade.

How does screw mechanism work

In screw mechanisms, either the screw shaft can rotate through a threaded hole in a stationary object,
or a threaded collar such as a nut can rotate around a stationary screw shaft.

Examples

a jar lid, a drill, a bolt, a light bulb, faucets, bottle caps and ball point pens

How does wheel mechanism work?

When you rotate the steering wheel the shaft rotates along with it. This in turn rotates the pinion which
is on top of the rack. The rotation of the pinion makes the rack move linearly moving the tie rod. The tie
rod connected to the steering arm then causes the wheel to turn.

EXAMPLES

Transporting heavy objects

How does wedge mechanism work?

A wedge is a simple machine that transforms lateral force and movement of the tool into a transverse
splitting force and movement of the workpiece.

EXAMPLE

shovels, teeth, some screwdrivers, a saw, a needle, scissors, and ice picks
How does pulley mechanism work?

A pulley with one wheel allows you to reverse the direction of your lifting force by pulling down on a
rope

EXAMPLE

Wells, elevators, curtains, rock climbing, exercise equipment
