MATHEMATICS 7

F EBR U A RY 1 4 – 1 8 , 2 0 2 2
Content Standard:
The learner demonstrates understanding of key
concepts of factors of polynomials.

Performance Standard:
The learner is able to formulate real-life problems
involving factors of polynomials, and solve these problems
accurately using a variety of strategies.
Most Essential Learning Competencies

1. The learner factors completely different types of

polynomials (polynomials with common monomial factor
difference of two squares, sum and difference of two cubes,
perfect squares trinomials, and general trinomials).

2. The learner solves problems involving factors of

polynomials.
This module consists of 5 lessons namely:

◦ Lesson 1: Factoring Polynomials with Greatest Common

Monomial Factor
◦ Lesson 2: Factoring by Grouping
◦ Lesson 3: Difference of Two Squares
◦ Lesson 4: Sum and Difference of Two Cubes
◦ Lesson 5: Factoring Perfect Square Trinomials
◦ Lesson 6: Factoring Quadratic Trinomials
What is Factoring?
The process of writing a number or expression as a product
is called factoring. If we write 60 as (5) (12), where 5 and 12
are called factors of 60.

For example,
60 = 6 . 10
60 = 2 . 30 Factorizations of 60
60 = 4 . 3 . 5
What is Factoring?

◦ Factoring is writing a polynomial as a product of polynomials.

◦ When an integer is written as a product of integers, each of the

integers in the product is a factor of the original number.

◦ When a polynomial is written as a product of polynomials , each of

the polynomials in the product is a factor of the original
polynomials.
Objectives:
At the end of the lesson the students should be able to:

LO1: Find the Greatest Common Factor (GCF) of a

polynomial.
LO2: Factor out the GCF of a polynomial.
LO3: Factor a polynomial with four terms by grouping.
LO4: Solve problems involving factors of polynomials with
Greatest Common Monomial Factor (GCMF).
The Greatest Common
Monomial Factor
The greatest common factor (GCF) of a set of
numbers is the largest factor or the biggest number
that all the numbers share.
Find the GCF of the list of monomials: 3xy3 , 9x2y2 , 18x3y
STEPS USING GREATEST COMMON FACTOR OF
THE POLYNOMIAL

Step 1: Identify the GCF of the polynomial.

Step 2: Divide the GCF out of every term of the polynomial.

Step 3: Express the polynomial as the product of GCF.

Example 1:
1. 8x3 + 4x2 + 2x
NOTE: (If a term of the polynomial is exactly the
same as the GCF, when you divide it by the GCF you
are left with 1, NOT 0.)
Example 2:
2. x2 (x + 5) – 7 (x + 5)
Let’s Try!
Factor out a polynomial form
1. 5x2 - 15x
2. 4x2 + 6x + 8
3. 12x2 – 9x + 15
FACTORING BY GROUPING
Factoring by grouping means that you will
group terms with common factors before
factoring.
STEPS USING FACTORING BY GROUPING

Step 1: Group the first two terms together and then the last
two terms together.

Step 2: Factor out a GCF from each separate binomial

Step 3: Factor out the common binomial, then combine the

remaining terms.
If you have four terms with no GCF, then try factoring by grouping.

Example 1:
1. x3 + 7x2 + 2x + 14
Example 2:
2. 8r3 – 64r2 + r – 8
Try It!
Factor the polynomials using the method of factoring by
grouping.
1. 3xy + 21x – 2y - 14
Practice Problem:

Factor the given GCF and factoring by grouping

1. 5x4 – 15x3 + 5x2
2. a3 – 2a2 + 5a – 10
