PROPERTIES OF A CIRCLE
ACTIVITY:
DRAW 6 CIRCLES (diameter is 2 inches
each)
Congruent Circles and Congruent Arcs
Congruent circles are circles with
congruent radii.
Example:
MA is a radius of A.
TH is a radius of T.
If MA  TH ,
then A  T
Congruent arcs are arcs of the same
circle with equal measures.
PROPERTIES OF A CIRCLE
1. A central angle is an angle
formed by two intersecting
radii such that its vertex is
at the center of the circle
∠AOB is a central angle
Its intercepted arc is the
minor acr from A to B(AB)
(AB)=800
∠AOB = 800
2. Inscribed Angle
An inscribed angle is an angle with its vertex ‘on’ the
circle formed by two intersecting chords.
1
Inscribed angle =2 𝐼𝑛𝑡𝑟𝑒𝑐𝑒𝑝𝑡𝑒𝑑 𝐴𝑟𝑐
1
∠ABC = =2 m(AC)

∠ABC is an inscribed angle

Its intercepted arc is the
minor acr from A to C (AC)
∠ABC = 500

3. Tangent Chord Angle
An angle by an intersecting tangent and chord has
its vertex ‘on’ the circle is:
1
Tangent Chord Angle = 𝐼𝑛𝑡𝑒𝑟𝑐𝑒𝑝𝑡𝑒𝑑 𝐴𝑟𝑐
2
1
∠ABC = = m(AC)
2

∠ABC = 600
A tangent is a line that touches a circle at one
point.

It always forms a right angle with the circle’s

radius.
4. Angle formed inside of a Circle by Two Intersecting
Chords
Angle formed inside of a Circle by Two Intersecting
1
Chords = 2 sum of the intercepted arcs
1
∠BED = 𝑚𝐴𝐶 + 𝑚𝐵𝐷
2

1
∠BED = 1700 + 700
2
1
=2 2400
= 1200
Remember:
The intercepted arcs belong to
the set of vertical angles
5. Angle formed outside of a Circle by the
Intersection of Two Tangents
1
Angle formed outside = difference of the intercepted arcs
2
Major arc ASC
Minor arc 𝐴𝐶
1 S
∠ABC =2 𝑚𝐴𝑆𝐶 − 𝑚𝐴𝐶
1
∠ABC =2 2600 − 1000
1
=2 1600
∠ABC = 800
Remember:
The intercepted arcs are major arc ASC and minor
arc 𝐴𝐶
6. Angle formed outside of a Circle by the
Intersection of Two Secants
1
Angle formed outside = difference of the intercepted arcs
2

The intercepted arcs are minor arcs 𝐴𝐸 and 𝐵𝐷

1
∠ACE =2 𝑚𝐴𝐸 − 𝑚𝐵𝐷
1
∠ACE =2 800 − 200
1
=2 600
∠ACE = 300
7. Angle formed outside of a Circle by the
Intersection of a Tangent and a Secant
1
Angle formed outside = difference of the intercepted arcs
2
Tangent: AB Major arc A𝐷
Secant: BD Minor arc 𝐴𝐶
1
∠ABC =2 𝑚𝐴𝐷 − 𝑚𝐴𝐶
1
∠ABC =2 1000 − 300
1
=2 700
∠ABC = 350
Opposite angles are supplementary:
∠A + ∠C = 1800
∠B + ∠D = 1800

CENTER – RADIUS form or STANDANDARD form

What is the circle function

of the graph whose center
is at pt(2,-5) and a radius
of 3 units.
Write each in the center-radius form and
determine their center and radius
1. x2 + y2 – 4x – 4y + 4= 0
2. x2 + y2 + 6x +4y -12 = 0
3. x2 + 6x + y2 + 8y = 9
4. x2 - 8x + y2 + 2y + 8 = 0
5. x2 + y2 -4x +4y – 4 =0
