Abstract
Security is one of the concerns everyone single being has. No matter the person
the feeling of complete security gives us a feeling of relief. Knowing non can hurt you
nor be taken from you. Human kind advanced through the Earth wile never forgetting to
be safe. To ensure survival, and the secure one’s happiness.

The process of keeping track of students’ attendance using paper sheet and old
file system have been around for ages. Using it now is a tedious task for you need to ask
each of the students to sign, to add to that the data input are often inaccurate.
Furthermore, a student skipping class can ask his/her friend that has attended the class to
sign for him/her. Falsification is often a problem with this method. Because of skipping
and inaccurate way of keeping track of a students’ attendance in class their chance and
ability to learn has decreased.

Fingerprint biometric is a good way to identify a person using their physiological

and behavioral trait. It cannot be faked nor can it be replicated. It is the traits that are
unique to each of us the moment we are born.

Using the fingerprint sensor, the researchers had designed a chair that has a
fingerprint attendance system. Furthermore, a locker was placed beneath the chair so that
the students has a place which they can store their belongings without worrying about the
security. For it can only be opened by their fingerprint alone, no other can open it.

CHAPTER I
INTRODUCTION

Background of the Study

One of the problems being in schools is lack of space. Classroom space is

usually occupied by students’ chairs and so other needs; such as individual lockers or
cabinets can’t be put in to store the students’ things. If there is enough space for lockers
and cabinets another problem met is security, for common locks can be easily broken,
forgotten, or just plain lost, and so there is a need for tighter security.

Since the beginning, one of the top priorities of human kind is security, along with
food, clothing and shelter. People have built walls, trenches, weapons, mazes, dungeons,
and vaults for our security. As humans go on, these things are continuously improved to
be able to repel new risks to ourselves. Now the human kind has advanced into the digital
age making way for new technologies that can improve our safety. One of these is the
biometric security (Thakkar D., 2009).

Biometrics is a way of identifying a person based on physiological and behavioral

traits. Fingerprints, face, hand geometry, handwriting, iris, retinal, vein and voice are
among the things being used for biometric identification. These traits cannot be reversed
engineered, and these traits are unique for every person, they cannot be stolen and used to
access personal information (Bioelectronix.com., 2004).
Students that are attending class relatively knows more than the ones who don’t.
Attending classes can greatly improve ones’ knowledge about the different subjects
taught in school. Furthermore, a teachers’ discussion and deeper explanations than the
ones’ in books greatly helps understanding the lesson being taught. Teachers aid in
children’s learning by guiding them every step of the way in their time in school. This
way students can retain the knowledge better than studying it by themselves (Asare J.W.
2012).

1
Attendance management is a tedious task using paper sheets and old file system
method. While this has been used for used for years, different problems have risen, such
as the percentage of student attendance in classes and frequently modify their
information. Adding the tracking and monitoring student time attendance, it becomes
troublesome and prone to errors. For a substitute biometric characteristics can be used for
authenticating students (Eromosele E.A., 2016)

Fingerprint biometrics is one of the leading applications of biometric technology.

That is why it is applied in this research where instead of giving out sheets of paper for
students to write their name on and sign to confirm their presence in class, falsification in
student attendance occur wherein a student can sign on behalf on another student as being
present in class. Since fingerprints are used for attendance this falsification of
information cannot happen (International Journal of Computer Science and Network
Security 2009).

Objective of the Study

A. Provide a working circuit that gives locker chair security using fingerprint
sensor.
B. Provide a working circuit that monitors attendance using fingerprint sensor.

Statement of the Problem

This study aims to answer the following questions:
1. Will the fingerprint attendance be an accurate way of tracking students’
attendance?
2. Can the locker chair be a secure place to store a students’ belongings?

Significance of the Study

The significance of this study is to give a safer place to store their belongings, and
to provide a less tedious and more accurate method of monitoring class attendance.

2
Scope and Limitations

The research will only focus on using R307 fingerprint scanner and RTC module
(DS-1302).

CHAPTER II 2

METHODOLOGY

Gathering of Materials

Fingerprint modules and solenoid locks are not available in the province of
Catanduanes. That is why the researchers ordered online for the parts they needed for the
project. For the RTC module they have already bought an Arduino kit with an RTC
module (DS-1302). While waiting for these parts to arrive they then bought 1 marine
plywood and an armchair was acquired at (SCHOOL)

Testing the Modules

The researchers first tested the RTC module as it was the first module on hand.
The module worked smoothly but the battery had to be replaced for it was an old battery.

The fingerprint module then arrived after nine days and was then tested
immediately. The libraries for the fingerprint sensor was wrong and a new one was
downloaded for the fingerprint sensor to work.

Making the Device

The order for the solenoid lock was cancelled so the researchers used a servo
motor and a bolt lock bought at a hardware store to make a substitute lock. The servo
motor had to rotate at a certain angle for it to open or close.

The codes were then combined but the researchers had to separate the attendance
and the opening of the lock, for that the researchers used push buttons so that the
attendance and the opening are separate. This is done so that when you scan your
fingerprint to open the locker the attendance will not be triggered.

An LED was also added so that when the students are timing in it will light up
signaling they are already present.

Making the Locker Chair

An armchair was acquired at Buenavista Elementary School. The researchers

bought a marine plywood for the locker below the chair. The chair was modified by a
local carpenter hired by the researchers. While the chair was being modified, the
researcher bought a breadboard to solder the parts together. The parts were then put into
the modified arm chair.

CHAPTER III

RESULTS AND DISCUSSION

When tested, the fingerprint attendance alone, the LED lit up indicating the
student is already in the room or is present in class. Furthermore because of the RTC the
attendance of the students is recorded and more accurate. For the locker, the door
unlocked so that the student could get or store their belongings.

CHAPTER IV

CONCLUSIONS AND RECOMMENDATIONS

Conclusions

The fingerprint locker chair is an accurate way of keeping track of a students’

attendance. The locker was also secure for it could only be opened by the fingerprint of
the owner.

Recommendations

Taking into account the observations noted during the experiment, the
researchers recommend the following for future experiments that include the same
aspect:

a) Create a server so that the students’ attendance is sent directly to

the teacher.
b) Actually use a solenoid lock instead of a servo motor.
c) Use a better RTC module specifically the DS3231.
d) Use a bigger LCD.
