I. INTRODUCTION

Application software applies the power of system software. This is why when

downloading software, you have to find a version that is compatible with your running

operating system. In essence, that software draws on the OS to create a Word document,

spreadsheet or PowerPoint presentation. Whether creating a presentation for work,

searching for a mate or just wanting to find out where to buy a box of Girl Scout cookies,

there’s probably an app out there to help you do it. Unfortunately, there’s no app that

actually explains what an app, short for application software, actually is or does. Here, we’ll

take a high-level view of this term, including what it means, how it’s used and how it has

evolved – and you don’t even need an app to read it. Computer software is the set of

instructions and data that tells a computer what to do and how to do it. Software provides

instructions to your computer’s hardware. Without it, your PC or Mac would be little more

than a large paperweight. But software actually comes in three main types: system

software, programming software and application software. System software includes all

the stuff that makes up a computer's operating system (OS), including device drivers,

configuration files and other key system components. This is the software that tells the

computer’s hardware what to do and provides a foundation for the system. Programming

software, or middleware, works much like the plumbing in your home by invisibly keeping

things running behind the scenes. Application software, however, is the most important

type for computer users because it is used to achieve many of the tasks that make us turn

to our computers in the first place, such as word processing, web browsing and data

crunching.

• SOFTWARE APPLICATION
i. Application software (app for short) is computing software
designed to carry out a specific task other than one relating to
the operation of the computer itself, [1] typically to be used by
end-users. Examples of an application include a word
processor, a spreadsheet program, an accounting application, a
web browser, an email client, a media player, a console game,
or a photo editor. The collective noun application software
refers to all applications collectively. [2] The other principal
classifications of software are system software, relating to the
operation of the computer, and utility software ("utilities").
ii. Applications may be bundled with the computer and its system
software or published separately and may be coded as
proprietary, open-source, or projects. [3] Apps built for mobile
platforms are called mobile apps.

• Application software
Application software is computer software designed to help the
user to perform singular or multiple related specific tasks.
Application Software utilizes the capacities of a computer
directly to a dedicated task. Application software is able to
manipulate text, numbers and graphics. It can be in the form of
software focused on a certain single task like word processing,
spreadsheet or playing of audio and video files.

DIFFERENT APPLICATION SOFTWARE

 Word Processing Software: This software enables the users to

create and edit documents. The most popular examples of this
type of software are MS- Word, WordPad, Notepad and some
other text editors. *

 Database Software: Database is a structured collection of data. A

computer database relies on database software to organize the
data and enable the database users to achieve database
operations. Database software allows the users to store and
retrieve data from databases. MS Access is the best example of
database software.

 « Spreadsheet Software: Excel, Lotus 1-2-3 and Apple Numbers

are some examples of spreadsheet software. Spreadsheet
software allows users to perform calculations. They simulate paper
worksheets by displaying multiple cells that makeup a grid.
 «= Multimedia Software: They allow the users to create and play
audio and video media. They are capable of playing media files.
Audio converters, players, burners, video encoders and decoders
are some forms of multimedia software. Examples of this type of
software include Real Player and Media Player.
 Presentation Software: The software that is used to display
information 1 in Mie rom of a slide enemies known as presentation
software. This type of software includes three functions, namely,
editing that allows insertion and formatting of text, methods to
include graphics in the text and functionality of executing the slide
shows. Microsoft PowerPoint is the best example of presentation
software.

The invention of computers has led to the advancement in science and

technology. Life has become more efficient with the use of computers in
our day to day life. Earlier, it was mainly used by large organizations for
scientific research and engineering applications. But today, computer is
being used in almost every field of our life. The major areas of computer
applications are as follows:

FIELDS

MILITARY
Computer plays a vital role in the design and development of high-tech
weapons for defense where absolute accuracy is essential. The whole
world saw the vast use of computers in defense during the Gulf and
Afghanistan wars and also in Iraq war. Computerized simulation exercises
are very helpful in training the pilots. Computer are used to help in fighting
terror by locating unlawful elements in the world with high accuracy. With
The use of computer technology, government around the world can
successfully execute their plans through effective planning.

BANKS
As a result of computerization and networking of a large number of a large
number of banks, several number of banks, several facilities are being
offered to the customers. Using online banking, you can check your past
transactions from the date of account opening with real time balance.
Money can easily be transferred to any account across the globe. Internet
banking also allows us to use ATM or debit card to shop, buy tickets, pay
bills for utility services like - electricity, telephone and postpaid mobiles. We
can even subscribe to free monthly bank account statements and apply
online to open fixed deposits. The facility of subscribing to mobile banking
enables us to virtually carry along the bank with us.

MEDIA AND COMMUNICATION

Computer has played a major role in revolutionizing the communication
system. From the advent of telephone and TV, which were perceived as
incredible things, we have come a long way to enjoy the facilities, like
mobile phone, Internet, email, SMS, chatting, cable TV, video conferencing
etc. All these things would gad not been possible without the evolution on
computers. Not only this, but a variety of musical formats can be played as
well as recorded by using computers.

RESEARCH
Computer is facilitating the research work in a tremendous way by
performing complex computations, which sometimes seem impossible for
humans. Some of them are listed below:
•The computations required for launching a new satellite into the
space. -Earthquake and Tsunami warnings are possible with the aids
of computer. -Weather forecasting is done with the
help of computers. -Impact of nuclear tests can be studied using
computers.

EDUCATION
Computer aided learning and teaching is changing the entire
spectrum of our education system. The multimedia rich computerized
animation and videos help students to understand the concepts in a
very simple and effective manner. Now it has become possible to
conduct online entrance exams at national and international level with
the help of computers. The result of various education boards as well
as entrance exams are available online.

MEDIA AND COMMUNICATION

Computer has played a major role in revolutionizing the
communication system. From the advent of telephone and TV, which
were perceived as incredible things, we have come a long way to
enjoy the facilities, like mobile phone, Internet, email, SMS, chatting,
cable TV, video conferencing etc. All these things would gad not been
possible without the evolution on computers. Not only this, but a
variety of musical formats can be played as well as recorded by using
computers.

CRIMINAL IDENTIFICATION AND

LAW ENFORCEMENT

Computer can create close resembling photographs of criminals. This

helps C.B.I. Staff to identify the criminals. The police use DNA finger
printing technique to identify accused with the help of skin, hair and
blood samples collected from the site of crime.
The traffic police use speed cameras on lights to monitor people for
law violation. The police also use computer to track the Information of
stolen automobiles and mobile phones in order to catch the criminals
in no time.

EDUTAINMENT
At home computer is being used for education as well as
entertainment. With the advancement of a computer, members of a
family can have an easy access to games, music, movies, e-mails,
chatting and research for their projects and assignments. People can
even enjoy the facility of watching television on their computers.

BOOK PUBLISHING AND READING

With the help of computers, now a day anyone can read any book at
any place and any time. Now we don't need to buy it, all what we
have to do is to download it. Not only this, with the help of computer,
designing, typing, and editing work can be done with great ease and
efficiency. One can insert pictures, apply various formatting features,
and styles to a book in no time using a computer.

COMMERCIAL PURPOSE
Advance reservation of rooms in hotels and booking of cinema tickets
is now possible from anywhere with the advent of Internet. The billing
system in theaters, shopping malls, and hotels has become possible
through computers.

BUSINESS
Computer has helped in improving business activities throughout the
world. Organizations can have access to the latest technology and
manpower across the world. E-commerce has completely changed
the scenario of online shopping. Global business relations can now
be maintained through Internet. Computers are used in offices for
maintaining sales and marketing records, stock control, planning,
production, tax records, preparing salary sheet etc.

ANIMATION AND FILMS

In the field of entertainment, computer is used for making cartoon
films, producing special musical effects, and bringing fantasy to life in
movies. Cartoon characters, like Walt Disney's Mickey and Donald,
Tom and Jerry etc. are given animation effects through computers.
Movies like Jurassic Park, Godzilla, Happy Feet, Robot, Koi Mil Gaya,
and Kung Fu Panda have used the latest computer animation
techniques for giving special effects

LIBRARY AND MUSEUM

The computers in library help to maintain the records of issue and
deposit dates of books, encyclopedias, CDs etc. A computer cam
maintains subject wise listing of books and help in listing of books
quickly. People can read newspapers, magazines and journals
online. In museums, computers are used to give information and play
recorded commentary on relevant topics.

SPORTS
Computers are also use in the field of sports. The sports equipment
used by athletes is first tested on the computers. There are several
sports exercising equipments, which have in build programs to train
the sports person. The training of athletes is done with the aid of
computers. Scoreboards, recording speed of players, action replays,
printing and selling of tickets are also done with the help of computers

MEDICAL SECTOR
Computers help in diagnosing diseases and controlling important
medical processes, like CITI scan, X-rays, ECG, and Ultra sounds.
Computerized equipment’s are helpful in maintaining patients'
medical records and performing surgeries. Computers can be used
for research and to help the doctors in the doctors in the treatment of
diseases.

ENGINEERING AND MANUFACTURING

Architects and engineers take the aid of Computer Aided Design and
Computer Aided Engineering for designing and manufacturing high

quality products, like car and planes. With the help of this technology,
they too can design the layout of the building and can view the
objects in detail.

GOVERNMENT SECTOR
Computers are used for official correspondence, budgeting, accounts,
reporting, payroll, attendance, uploading, of various schemes, forms,
etc. Sectors, like Census bureau, income tax, airlines, and railways,
electricity boards or telephone exchanges are benefitting from the
computer technology.

CONCLUSION

Application software are commonly used today for various

computer activities all over the world. The existence of these
software helps people to edit text, images, videos, music, etc.
Thus we see that application software have made it possible
for us users to interact with the computer systems. Application
software has served as a boon in harnessing the computing
power in the accomplishment of certain important individual and
organizational tasks.
