a country that has sport as one of its passions. Sports that range from the most traditional,
such as tennis, basketball, rugby, cricket and swimming to the most peculiar, such as
netball, lawn bowls, rugby league and of course, the most loved among Australians,
Australian football.
However, it was boxing that came to shake the country's identity structures, or put old
identities on the ropes, when in 1908, American boxer John Arthur Johnson, known as Jack
Johnson, became the first black man and Australian to win a US belt. heavy weights.

3º Slide (Simão)-

1)- Australian football or “Footy”

Just like the United States that has American football, Australia has its own version of the
sport.

2) Rugby
It looks like Australian football, but it isn't.
Unlike Australian football, rugby played there has more defined rules that are followed by
other countries as well.

3) Horse Race
Among the most popular sports in Australia is horse racing.
Here, the Melbourne Cup races are the biggest horse racing event in Australia.
It always takes place on the first Tuesday in November and is known as “the race that stops
the nation”.

4) Cricket

A sport that has been growing a lot in terms of popularity there, including among women.
If you don't know, cricket is a sport that uses balls and bats. Roughly, it resembles baseball.
Practiced for over 200 years in Australia, cricket emerged in the medieval era, widely played
by the nobility.

5) Swimming
One of Australia's most popular sports, without a doubt. Mainly among children and
teenagers (6-13 years).
It is very common for parents to be encouraged to put their children in swimming lessons
from an early age. After all, knowing how to swim in a country like Australia is very useful!
6) Tennis
Here is another sport that is well known and even considered the darling of the Aussies.
A study released by the research institute, Sweeney Research, incidentally, places tennis as
one of the most popular sports in Australia.

4º Slide (Martim)- Most Australian primary schools give great importance to physical
education, whether public or private, both host three major sporting events each year: Cross
Country Carnival; Swimming Carnival; Athletic Carnival.
Each School Encourage their students to participate in the group stage and grade in group
finals, and perform well in competition. Sources, the top ten students in the group of schools
get the most training opportunities.
Of course, compared to public schools, private schools, have a more public physical
education curriculum.
Some private schools purchase sports courses and experienced coaches to teach them.
In many private schools, good grades aren't the most important thing. Good students in
sports are the big stars of the school, and everyone is proud of them.
In addition to the three annual competitions, every Saturday the private schools have a
football game that is also mandatory.

5º Slide (Tomás)- You can choose football, basketball, rugby, netball, hockey and so on.
Similar to community clubs, they are grouped first by age and then by level. Once you've
chosen a project, you should set aside time each week to participate in training and ensure
that you'll be able to attend Saturday's competition, rain or shine (unless you're sick).
These school competitions give all students the opportunity to try to participate in more
sports and improve their will in sports training.

5º Slide (Tomás)- Australian Government Funds Scholarships for Young Football Players.
Funded by the federal government, the Australian Sports Commission awards 20
scholarships annually to students who demonstrate excellence in football. Recipients receive
at least one year of training and study from the Australian Institute of Sport, with the option of
a second year. Students 15 to 17 years of age are eligible as long as they maintain current
or pending Australian citizenship. Applications are not accepted as fellows are recruited by
scouts and coaches.
6º Slide (Henrique)- In our opinion, Portugal should give more importance to sport,
universities should give more support to athletes, for example, give scholarships to athletes,
provide housing for athletes, and there should be more competition between universities. All
of these that we just mentioned are things that countries like Australia and the United States
give to athletes.

7ºSlide (Tomás)- With this work we were able to conclude that Australia and other countries
give a lot of importance to sport, something that Portugal does not do, but should do.
