1.0 INTRODUCTION
The NCTL replacement pipeline length traverses 49 km between the new (to be
installed) Nembe-III Manifold platform extension and the new (to be installed) San
Bartholomeo Manifold platform. The Work is divided into two main sections: 12”
trunkline and 24” trunkline with various size & length of associated feeder lines to
manifolds. The 12” section initiates at Nembe-III Manifold extension platform and
terminates at Nembe Creek Junction Manifold – Nembe Main Manifold. The 24”
section initiates at the new (to be installed) Nembe-1 Tie-in Manifold and terminates
at the new (to be installed) San Bartholomeo Manifold platform. There are
approximately fifty-three (53) water ways to be crossed along the full length of the
ROW. All Works associated with this installation are in the close proximity and will be
laid parallel to the existing live Nembe Creek – Cawthorne Channel Trunkline.
The marsh ditch excavation is associated with all other operational activities within
the ROW. These activities include but are not limited to: acquisition of additional
temporary ROW, bush clearing, excavation of access slots for construction
equipment, excavation of access slots for piling and structure installation, marsh
ditch excavation & back filling, water way crossing excavation & back filling, pipe
welding, field joint coating, NDT & NDE, preparation of pipe stings into “false ditch”,
cathodic protection (permanent & temporary), existing pipeline under crossings,
barred tee and feeder line tie-ins, marsh ditch tie-ins, block valve structure tie-ins,
manifold structure tie-ins, water way crossing tie-ins, re-instatement of surrounding
areas and re-vegetation along the ROW.
The following Summary is provided to define the overall magnitude of the project
excavation requirements and quick reference to the marsh ditch locations:
Eight (8) marsh excavators, two (2) marsh draglines, two (2) marsh pull buggies, one
(1) spud barge excavator pontoon, (1) spud barge crane clamshell/dragline dredge,
two (2) ramp barges with associated two (2) support tugs, houseboat
accommodation and crew launches (fast craft) comprise the major equipment of the
Marsh Ditch Spread.

The marsh backhoes will primarily excavate the trench along the ROW (including
narrow creeks). The marsh draglines will primarily excavate the wider and deeper
small creeks utilizing the clamshell bucket. The dragline bucket is provided to
complete the final “smoothing” transition of the trench and trench bottom. The marsh
pull buggies provide support for the excavation equipment positioned along the
ROW (example: transport of fuel oil, lube oil, equipment spare parts and personnel).
All excavated material must be deposited on the ROW. In locations where soft soil
conditions exist, boundary levees may have to be erected from excavated firm
material. Excavated materials must also be laid such that the marsh equipment can
traverse the whole length of the ROW alongside the ditch. This requirement is
necessary to provide equipment access for under crossings, marsh tie-ins and
movement of personnel along the ROW without having to walk long distances.
The trench excavations shall be done according to the engineered calculation for
pipe bending radius relative to the trench profile. The trench depth is governed by
the actual ground elevation at the respective excavation area.
