GEOMETRIC SEQUENCE

Module Overview : This module will help you to understand the concept of geometric sequence. This will
also help you differentiate geometric sequence from an arithmetic sequence.(Vibal
SMART CLASS MATH 10 , 2020, PAGE 26)

Learning Competencies : At the end of this module, you can:

 illustrate a geometric sequence

 differentiate a geometric sequence from an arithmetic sequence

Pre-assessment
Pre-assessment
Before going any further, you should answer first this pre-assessment section to gauge your prior knowledge on
geometric sequence, by determining the next two terms of the sequences given below. Write your answers on the line
provided.

1. 1, 2, 4, 8, 16, ___, ____,

2. 324, 108, 36, _____,_____

3. 16, 24, 36, ____,____

WELL DONE 
INTRODUCTION

Good day! You are now on the first part of this module. Your first
task is to read and analyze the problem and answer the questions
that follow.

Motivation
A particular booth in a school festival has different fruits in separate boxes. The challenge is to guess the number of fruits
on the 5th box. If there are 2 apples in the first box, 4 oranges in the second box, 8 mangoes on the third box, 16 bananas on
the fourth box, how many fruits are there in the 5th box? __________
What have you noticed with the numbers of fruits on the first four boxes?

Linking Statement
Congratulations on completing the task above! It shows geometric sequence which will be further discussed as you go on to
this module.

INTERACTION
(Hi! Here are some reading materials and examples on
geometric sequence. Please take time to read and understand,
for you to be ready in your next task. Enjoy!

A geometric sequence, also called a geometric progression, is a sequence in which each succeeding term is
obtained from the previous term by multiplying it by a fixed number called common ratio.
Examples:
Below, we will identify whether the given sequence is geometric or not. And we’ll determine the common ratio of
each geometric sequence. Also, we’ll figure out why.
Sequence Common ratio SOLUTION REASON/EXPLANATION

3, 6, 12,24 Geometric 2 3 x 2 = 6, 6 x 2 = 12, 12 x The succeeding terms in the

2 = 24 sequence is obtained by
multiplying 2 (common ratio) on
the previous term, therefore it is
a geometric sequence.
2,6,18, 54 geometric 3 2 x 3 = 6, 6 x 3 = 18, 18 x The succeeding terms in the
3 = 54 sequence is obtained by
multiplying 3 (common ratio) on
the previous term, therefore it is
a geometric sequence.
1, 3, 5, 7 not 1 + 2 = 3, 3 + 2 = 5, 5 + 2 Do not contain a common ratio, but
=7 a common difference of 2.
Therefore not a geometric
sequence.
1, 8, 27, 64 not 13 = 1, 23 = 8, 33 = 27, 43 Do not contain a common ratio.
= 64 Therefore not a geometric
sequence.

You have learned last week that an arithmetic sequence is a sequence that has a common difference. Let us now
study which among the sequences below is arithmetic, and which is geometric. And what are the common difference/ ratio.
Then, we’ll organize our answers on the table provided below.
Sequence Common SOLUTION REASON/EXPLANATION
ratio/difference

2, 5, 8, 11 arithmetic 3 2 + 3= 5, 5 + 3 = 8, 8 + The succeeding terms in the

3 = 11 sequence is obtained by adding
3 (common difference) on the
previous term, therefore it is an
arithmetic sequence.
4,8,16,32 Geometric 2 4 x 2 = 8 x 2 = 16 16 x The succeeding terms in the
2 =32 sequence is obtained by
multiplying 2 (common ratio)
on the previous term, therefore
it is a geometric sequence.
5,10,20,40,80 geometric 2 5 x 2 = 10 x 2 = 20 x 2 = The succeeding terms in the
40 x 2 = 80 sequence is obtained by
multiplying 2 (common ratio)
on the previous term, therefore
it is a geometric sequence.
1,6, 11, 16, 21, 26 arithmetic 5 1+5 = 6 + 5 = 11+5 = The succeeding terms in the
16+5 = 21+5 = 26 sequence is obtained by adding
5 (common difference) on the
previous term, therefore it is an
arithmetic sequence.

Exercises (FA)

ACTIVITY 1
You need to study first the sequences given on the first column. And identify whether it is geometric or not. Then,
determine the common ratio for sequences that are geometric. Write your answers on the second and third columns.
