PATTERNS AND SEQUENCE

Module Overview : This module will:

help you define the concepts of patterns and sequences.
teach you how to differentiate a finite sequence to an infinite
sequence.
help you distinguish particular patterns and determines the next
few terms of a given sequence. (Vibal Group Incorporation,
Smart Class Math 10, Page 2).
Learning Competencies : At the end of this module, you can:
1. Generate Patterns;
2. Illustrate Arithmetic Sequence.
Instructional Materials : Vibal Group Inc. 2020, Smart Class Math 10 pp. 2-10

How was it? Easy, right? You did a great job. Now you are ready to proceed to the lesson.
Have fun.
INTRODUCTION

The image on the right side is the result of joining the

diagonals of a regular polygon. The diagonals of any
regular polygon are formed by joining any two of its non-
consecutive vertices. The number of diagonals, which is
related to the number of vertices, follows a sequence.

What have you observed in the given picture?

Discussion & Examples

A sequence (progression) is basically a list of numbers that follow a certain order/rule.

A number pattern is a list of numbers that follow a certain sequence.

Example: 1
5, 10, 15, 20, 25, …,
Solution:
Pattern rule: 5n But why you ask? Let’s have a look on how we came up with
the solution.

5 10 15 20 25 This is our sequence right?

1 2 3 4 5 We have five terms in our sequence so

we number them accordingly.

And now for the actual solution:

Let n be the number of term
5n

5(1) Our first term which is equal to 5

5(2) Our second term which is equal to 10 Easy to understand
5(3) Our third term which is equal to 15 right? Let’s have a look
5(4) Our fourth term which is equal to 20 at another example.
5(5) Our fifth term which is equal to 25

Example: 2
7, 17, 27, 37, 47, …,
Solution:
Pattern rule: 10n-3 I believe you already know how we came up with the
answer right?
Example: 3
Consider the rule form of the sequence a n=7 n−4
If we are asked to get the first five terms of the sequence, we have:
a 1=7 ( 1 )−4=3
a 2=7 ( 2 )−4=10
a 3=7 ( 3 )−4=17
a 4=7 ( 4 ) −4=24
a 5=7 ( 5 )−4=31 Pretty easy right? Let’s apply what you have learned so far. Have a
look at the below activities and see if you can answer them
Therefore, the
sequence can
also be denoted
as 3, 10, 17, 24, 31.
