Chapter 7 – Grade 9 Second Exercise

A.Complete the text below using the appropriate tenses (Past Simple or Past Continuous)!
“One afternoon, Socrates was standing (stand) outside the gates of Athens when he noticed
(notice) a traveller who was staring (stare) him for a long time. Socrates asked (ask) the man why he
____had come_____ (come) to Athens. “I’m thinking of moving to Athens,” he said. “What is it like
to live here?” Socrates looked (look) at him. “First, would you tell me what was it like in your city?”
The man replied, “Oh, it was awful. Everyone stabs you in the back and wants to make money from
you.” Frowning, Socrates told (tell) him, “Well, you’ll find the same things here. I suggest you go
somewhere else”.
Socrates stood (stand) there a few hours more. Then another man approached (approach) him.
This man too ____had just arrived____ (just arrive) in Athens and was considering (consider)
moving to the city. He too asked Socrates, “Can you tell me what it’s like to live here” Socrates asked,
“First, would you tell me what was like to live in your previous city?” “Where I come from the people
work together and help each other”, said the man. “Kindness is everywhere and you are never treated
with anything but respect”. “Well,” replied (reply) Socrates, “you’ll find the same thing here. Welcome
to Athens”.

B. Put the verb in brackets into the correct form in the gap AFTER the verb itself. Where no
verb precedes the blank space, put the following linking words into the gaps:

evening Paul

watching the television and (eat) eating his supper __when__ the door suddenly (open) opened and a
burglar (come) came in. He (wear) was wearing a mask and (carry) carrying a sack. Before doing
anything else he (tie) tied Paul to the chair. Then he (go) went upstairs to look for money. Although
he (not find) didn’t find any money, he (find) found a lot of jewelry, which he (put) put into his sack.
In his rush to get downstairs he (not see) didn’t see the dog (lie) lying at the bottom of the stairs,
and he (fall) fell over it, losing his glasses. While the burglar (look for) was looking for them, Paul
(try) tried to free himself. Finally Paul (manage) managed to escape and he (phone) phoned the police.
As soon as the burglar (find) found his glasses he (run) ran out of the house. However, unfortunately
for him, the police (wait) were waiting for him at the end of the garden. The police (catch) caught
the robber right away.

C. Read the text and answer the questions!


Nasreddin and The Beggar
One day, Nasreddin was up on the roof of his house, mending a hole in the tiles. He had nearly finished,
and he was pleased with his work. Suddenly, he heard a voice below called "Hello!" When he looked down,
Nasreddin saw an old man in dirty clothes standing below.
"What do you want?" asked Nasreddin.
"Come down and I'll tell you," called the man.
Nasreddin was annoyed, but he was a polite man, so he put down his tools. Carefully, he climbed all the
way down to the ground.
"What do you want?" he asked, when he reached the ground.
"Could you spare a little money for an old beggar?" asked the old man. Nasreddin thought for a minute.
Then he said, "Come with me." He began climbing the ladder again. The old man followed him all the way
to the top. When they were both sitting on the roof, Nasreddin turned to the beggar.
"No," he said.

5. I think Nasreddin felt a little annoyed when he knew the beggar’s request.

feel what he felt.
7. If i describe Nasreddin in a word it is dodgy, because he wanted the old men to
feel the same irritation he felt.
