PRACTICUM MANUAL

AC 523 for the


Bachelor of Science in Accountancy,
Bachelor of Science in Management Accounting and
Bachelor of Science in Accounting Technology

The time to narrow the gap between academe and industry should be done early on in the
Bachelor of Science in Accountancy (BSA), Bachelor of Science in Management Accounting
(BSMA) or Bachelor of Science in Accounting Technology (BSAT) program. For the learning
process to impact on the day to day life of the student, there is a need to understand the realities
of the actual business environment.

Students have to be made aware that the classroom is entirely different from the business setting
through actual exposure in the workplace. This is a way to indirectly condition them to the life
after their Accountancy, Management Accounting or Accounting Technology program.

The Practicum Program is a direction geared towards the further comprehension of classroom
theories as applied to the practice world.

The following matrix, after taking into account the CHED Memorandum Order No. 23 Series of
2009, shows information for AC 523, AC 524 and CAT 501 practicum of the BSA, BSMA and
BSAT programs of the university.

Particulars Practicum

1 Objective To be able to narrow the gap between knowledge and


skills acquired in the classroom versus knowledge and
skills acquired in the working environment

2 Who shall enroll in the BSA/BSMA/BSAT students who have completed their
Practicum Course 3rd year level requirements

3 When offered ● Second semester of 4th year (for BSA/BSMA enrolled
in AC 523)
● Summer of 5th year (for BSA enrolled in AC 524)
● Summer of 3rd year (for BSAT enrolled in CAT 501)

4 Nature of practicum work For BSA, areas relating to accounting, auditing, finance
or taxation; For BSMA/BSAT, areas relating to
accounting, finance or taxation

5 Required practicum hours Minimum of one hundred fifty (150) hours

6 Number of units 3 units

7 Dress code Uniform or office attire

8 Minimum number of hours 4 hours (continuous)


per day of practicum

9 Initial practicum requirement Incoming 4th year BSA/BSMA students or incoming 3rd
year BSAT students

10 Pre-enrollment requirement ● Submission of practicum proposal to the department


chairperson or practicum adviser, which provides the
detail on the following:
10.1 nature of work
10.2 timetable or schedule
10.3 company address
10.4 company tel. no.
10.5 contact person
10.6 relevance of work to the BSA/BSMA/BSAT
program

● In alternative, design and finalize the training manual


or plan with the Host Training Establishment that was
previously recommended by the department
chairperson.

● Approval of the Practicum Proposal, Manual or Plan

11 Enrollment requirement ● Enroll in AC 523, AC 524 or CAT 501

● Submit AC 523, AC 524 or CAT 501 Admission Slip

and Parents’/Guardian’s Certification of Waiver/
Permission (Annex 1) to practicum adviser.

12 Initial work requirement ● Make an application letter.

● Endorse the application letter to the practicum adviser


(Annex 2).

● The enrollee, after being accepted, shall provide the


company the following:
1. Thank You Letter (Annex 3)
2. Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) which shall be
signed by the USC VPAA and the company
authorized official. (Softcopy is provided in the
Yahoo! Groups)
3. Daily Attendance Record (Annex 4)
4. Performance Evaluation Sheet (Annex 5)

Nos. 3 & 4 above are to be filled out by the company.

13 Duties of the Practicum ● Supervision of the practicum program

● Pre-arranged site visit

14 Duties of the Practicum ● Submission of the following documents (inside a long


Student size clear book) one week after the last day of the
practicum period:
14.1 Completed and duly-signed daily attendance
record
14.2 Completed performance evaluation sheet inside
a sealed envelope from the company
14.3 Certification as to completion of the minimum
hours
14.4 Weekly progress report (Annex 6)
14.5 Written practicum paper (8.5” x 13” size bond
paper, double space, Arial font, size 12) (Annex
7)

● Group discussion with the practicum adviser on a


regular basis

● Notify the practicum adviser promptly of any changes.

15 Practicum Culminating The Department Chair will issue a Certificate of


Activity Appreciation to the companies accommodating USC

student trainees.

Objectives 1. To be able to share the experiences in the work place


2. To increase the confidence level of the student

16 Practicum Grading system The final grade is equitably computed based on the
following criteria:
16.1 Attendance (20%)
16.2 Completed performance evaluation sheet inside the
sealed envelope from the company (30%)
16.3 Written practicum paper (Annex 7) (50%)

CERTIFICATION

practicum (on-the-job training) for a minimum of 150 hours/300 hours on <date> until <date> at
<company name> in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree in <Bachelor of

Accounting Technology>.

It is understood that <he/she> abides by the rules and regulations that may be imposed by
the Supervisor/Staff-in-Charge for <his/her> welfare and safety.

I fully agree to waive any responsibility on the part of the University of San Carlos,
<company name>, and/or their representative/s, in case of any untoward incident that may
happen to my <son/daughter> during the duration of the practicum.

Annex 2: Sample Application Letter (To be sent to the company where the students will have

position as it is also one of my course requirements. My program requires me to undergo a
practicum of at least one hundred fifty (150) hours to any company of my choice.

I believe my education has equipped me with the necessary knowledge and skills needed for the
tasks and activities that I might undergo in your company. My available schedule for practicum
will be every <schedule>, since I will have my classes every <schedule>.

Attached are my resume and the USC Guidelines for Practicum for your perusal. I would be

GUIDELINES FOR PRACTICUM


June __, 2011

1. Incoming 3rd year or 4th year students are required to undergo a practicum program for a
total of <150 hours for BSMA/BSAT students> or <300 hours for BSA students>.

2. The student is required to enroll in practicum as a 3-unit requirement.

3. Each student shall submit a practicum proposal which will include the following details:
3.1 Nature of Work
3.2 Timetable/Schedule
3.3 Company Address & Telephone Number
3.4 Contact Person
3.5 Relevance of work to the Accountancy, Management Accounting or Accounting
Technology program

4. Upon approval of the practicum proposal, an application letter will be prepared and sent
by the student, after the same is endorsed by his/her respective practicum adviser.

5. The student shall furnish the practicum adviser a letter of acceptance from the company
within three (3) days from the first day of work. In addition, the student shall secure a
letter of thanks from the adviser (Annex 3), Daily Attendance Record (Annex 4), and
Performance Evaluation Sheet (Annex 5) to be delivered to the company where the
practicum student is working.

6. The practicum adviser shall make a prearranged visit to the workplace where the
practicum student is assigned.

7. The student shall prepare a report paper on the practicum experience (Annex 7). It is
submitted together with the Daily Attendance Record (Annex 4), Performance Evaluation
Sheet (Annex 5) and Certification of Completion of Practicum Hours to the practicum
adviser.

8. Group discussion on the work experience will be done on a regular basis with the
Department Chairperson or Practicum Adviser.

Annex 7: Written Practicum Paper

All students undergoing practicum are required to submit a written report after the practicum
term. The contents of the report are as follows:
