Extrude command
You can add polygons to an existing mesh by extruding polygon faces, edges, or vertices. For
example, when you extrude a face on a polygon mesh the existing face telescopes inwards or
outwards as it creates new connecting faces on the sides of the extrusion.

Note: The Extrude options window (Edit Mesh > Extrude > ) is context sensitive. That is, when you
display the Extrude options window, only the options for the currently selected components (faces,
edges, or vertices) are displayed in the window.

Use one of the following methods to access the Extrude command:

 Select Edit Mesh > Extrude in the main menu bar

 Select Bevel Edge from the marking menu (Shift + right-click)

 Click in the Modeling Toolkit window

 press Ctrl + E
 Shift + drag any transform manipulator when in component selection mode.
What is the use of Extrude tool?
The Extrude tool is used in conjunction with an existing 2D shape or shapes in the
scene. It allows you to create an extruded 3D shape from the selected 2D shape by
defining various parameters.

Extrude a polygon face, edge, or

vertex
You can add polygons to an existing mesh by extruding polygon faces, edges, or vertices using
the Extrude command.

Note: The Show Manipulator Tool, used in this task, appears only if Construction History is on.
To extrude polygon faces or edges

1. Select the faces or edges you want to extrude.

Note: In the Modeling preferences, ensure that Keep faces together is on, so the edges of
adjacent faces stay connected after the extrude operation.

2. Select Edit Mesh > Extrude, click in the Modeling Toolkit or press Ctrl + E.

An extrude node is created and the Show Manipulator Tool and In-View Editor appear.

3. Do one of the following:

 Use the manipulator to control the direction and distance of the extrusion. Click the circle handle
attached to the manipulator to switch between local and world axes.
1.

 Adjust the attributes in the In-View Editor to edit the extrusion. For more information about the
attributes, see Extrude Options.
Tip: You can set the precision for the Thickness, Offset, and Divisions attributes by selecting Edit >
Settings > Change Precision in the Channel Box. The In-View Editor uses the same precision settings
as the Channel Box.
2. (Optional) Extruding edges can make your mesh non-manifold. Use Mesh > Cleanup to fix non-
manifold geometry.
To extrude a vertex

1. Select the vertex you want to extrude.

2. Select Edit Mesh > Extrude, click in the Modeling Toolkit, or press Ctrl + E.
An extrude node is created and the In-View Editor appears.

The vertex extrudes along its vertex normal, creating additional faces for each face that shares the vertex.

3. Using the In-View Editor, adjust the attributes to edit the extrusion.

Extrude polygons in an arc or wedge

shape
You can use the Wedge feature to extrude a face to quickly create:

 arches in buildings
 knees and elbows in characters
 curved sections of roads or tunnels
To extrude polygons in an arc or wedge shape

1. Switch to Multi component selection mode.

2. Select the face(s) you want to extrude, then select the edge(s). This edge can be on the same
mesh, or an entirely different mesh. If multiple edges are selected, extrusions will rotate around
their average orientation.
3. Select Edit Mesh > Wedge.
4. In the In-View Editor that appears, adjust the poly Wedge Face node attributes.
