Walter the Blue Fish

It’s not what it looks like. Walter wants to be in the toilet. You see he has heard there are a lot of fish in the sea
and he wants to go find one. He’s waxed his moustache, slicked his dorsal fin to the side and now all he has to do
is pull the flush.

I was inspired by Finding Nemo. In the movie, Nemo, the little clown fish, uses the toilet to get back to the ocean.
I thought it would be fun to crochet a toilet for Walter. Walter himself was created as a partner for Marilyn the
Fancy Fish. Why the moustache? Well, I think it makes him look quite debonair, plus I just like them. (I was a
Tom Selleck fan when I was younger.)

The toilet pattern will be going up in the next couple of days. It turned out a little more complicated than I
originally thought.

Skill Level

Moderate. Joining the eyelids to the eyes and the body is a little tricky. The crocheting should be straightforward.
Note on yarn and hook size
I crochet with a light worsted (DK) weight yarn. You can use a slightly heavier or lighter yarn as long as you use
the same type of yarn for the different colours. This will ensure your toy is in proportion. Use a hook size that
will give you a nice firm stitch. The 3.00mm is my favourite hook.

Materials
Yarn
Blue
White

Crochet Hook – 3.00mm or preferred size

Filling
Plastic pellets or dried beans and stocking
Tapestry needle
Black felt
White felt
Craft glue and/or thread and sharp needle for attaching felt

Terminology

ch – Chain
dc – Double crochet
sc – Single crochet
sc2tog – Single crochet two stitches together
sl st – Slip stitch
st – Stitch. This term covers ch, sc, dc, sl st and other stitches used in crochet.

Make a ring – The starting point for crocheting in a spiral. Use which ever method you prefer.

Body (in Blue)

Make a ring.
Rnd 1: 7 sc in ring (7)
Rnd 2: 2 sc in each sc around (14)
Rnd 3: *sc in next sc, 2 sc in next sc* around (21)
Rnd 4: *sc in next 2 sc, 2 sc in next sc* around (28)
Rnd 5-6: sc in each sc around
Rnd 7: *sc in next 3 sc, 2 sc in next sc* around (35)
Rnd 8-10: sc in each sc around

Start stuffing. Fill the lower part of the body with filling then add some plastic pellets or dried beans wrapped in a
stocking to add weight. Walter won’t sit up without a bit of extra weight in the body because his eyes are so big

Fasten off, leaving tail for joining to the eyes and body. Make two.

Assembly
***These are guidelines only. Be guided by your own eye at all times.***

Join the tail fins to the body. They are sewn onto the flattened end of the body, one fin on each corner.

Join the dorsal fin to the body. The dorsal fin should be aligned with the tail fins. It should sit about two finger-
widths away from where the tail fins meet the body.

Join the side fins to the body. One should be placed on either side of the body where the body is at its widest.

Join the eyes to the body. They should sit close together.

Join the eyelids to the eyes and body. Pin the eyelids on top of the eyes, the closed hole sitting where the eyes
meet. Don’t stitch the front of the eyelids to the eyes. Stitch the eyelid to the side of the eye. Stitch the back of the
eyelid to the body.

Felt features. Cut out two circles from the black felt for the pupils. For highlights, cut out two very small circles
from the white felt and attach them with glue or needle and thread to the black circles. The pupils sit on the centre
of the eyes. Attach them with glue or thread. Cut out a moustache from the black felt. Attach just below the eyes.
