Gears & Gearboxs

Gearbox Definition
• GB is a machine that transmits mechanical energy from a
prime mover to an output device. A gearbox can also
change the speed, direction, or torque of mechanical
energy

Gear Definition
• A round or cylindrical mechanical component with teeth, used to
transmit power. Gears are designed to mesh with one another and
can alter the speed, torque, or direction of mechanical energy.

• The Two Basic Types Of Gear

 Bull Gear: big gear
 Pinion Gear: small gear

• The Two Basic Shapes Of Gear

 Spur Gear: A type of gear that has straight, flat-topped teeth set parallel
to the shaft. Spur gears are the most common type of gears used in
industry.

 Helical Gears: A type of gear with slanted teeth. Helical gears are quieter
than spur gears, but they are more expensive and produce side loads.

 Herringbone Gear
Gear Combination

• Worm Gear: A gear with teeth

that mesh with the screw-like
threads of a worm to transmit
motion.

• Rack & Pinion: It can be used to

convert rotational motion to linear
motion
• Bevel Gear: A type of gear with
cone-shaped teeth cut at an angle.
Bevel gears are often used in
angular gear trains.

• Crown Gear: The crown gear is

designed to mesh at right angles to
another crown gear or to the
standard spur gear

• Planetary Gear: A gear that rotate

circularly by sun gear and around
internal gear

• Check Backlash:
– Backlash, sometimes called lash or
play, is clearance or lost motion in a
mechanism caused by tooth
thickness changes. Backlash is
typically measured along the pitch
circles.
– Backlash can be measured at site by
using Dial Gauge
– As a rule of thumb the average
backlash is defined as 0.04 divided by
the Diametral pitchs
• Diametral pitchs: Ratio of the number of
teeth to the standard pitch diameter in
inches

• Check Contact Pattern:
– This approach
provides a better
understanding of how
gears react under load
– Miss Teeth Contact, can
be figured or checked by
using “Gear-Marking
compound”.. a popular
brand is “Prussian Blue”
made by Permatex.
