1. General
Low CarbonNickel(LC-nickel) is extremelydelicateto sulfurattack. When in contactat
temperatures above300C, tinytracesof sulfur containingmaterialsactuallyare sufficientto
destroythe nickelbeyondany possibilityof repair(heatedsulfurpenetrates between the
grainboundariesand convertsintonickel-sulfide. In the zonesof nickel-sulfide
formationthe
nickellosesits resistanceand becomesunusable).

Unfortunately, thereis almostno substancein whichsulfuris not presentin any form

whatsoever. Mostdangerousin contactwithnickelare oil,grease,dirt,paint,varnish,
marker-ink, adhesivetapes,glue,tar or oil paper,etc.,fingerprints
(perspiration),
shoeprints
(dirtof any kind),etc. One morehazardof sulfurcontactto the nickelis the pollutedair of
citiesand industrialareas,whichusuallyreachesa considerable levelof sulfurcontent.

Scrupulouscleannessof all nickelparts, tools, clothingand handsof the workersthereforeis

a precaution
commandwhichdoesnot tolerateany compromiseat all.

2. Liability
The slightestcarelessness or omissionin nickelhandlingmay havecatastrophic
consequences. That is why all operationsof construction, weldingand erectionof nickel
partsare to be carriedout undercloseand permanentsupervisionby a Bertramsspecialist.
This supervisionis a basicconditionfor acceptance of possiblewarrantyclaimsin the future.
Bertramswill refuseany liabilityfor itemswhichhavebeenworkedon withoutthe above
supervisionor where the directiveshave not been strictlyfollowedrespectively.

All data of cleaningand weldingproceduresare to be enteredinto the respectivecontrol

certificate. All weldingsmust be stampedwithan identification number, whichis to be
enteredinto the respectivedrawingand the qualitycontrolcertificate. The latterwill be
issuedby the Bertramsdelegateto recordthe namesof the welderand the supervisor in
charge,as well as to certifythe correctexecutionof cleaningand weldingedge preparation.
sinceany weldingactivity(be it the actualwelditselfor any repairof the heat influenced
zones,a separatecertificate is to be issuedfor each repairof weldingsas well.

3. Storage
To excludeany possiblehazardof nickeldestruction and to avoidunnecessary expensesfor
cleaning, the nickeland nickelequipmentshouldbe storedin a dry, cleanand safeplace.
Preferablyunderroof and in a closedbuilding.Reliableand carefullyinstructedpeopleonly
shouldbe in chargefor transportand handtingof nickel. The metallicbrightsurfaceis to be
protectedagainstcontamination of any kind.lt is positively
prohibited
to writeon the nickel
with any means whatsoever.

4. Cleaningof LC Nickel
All nickelpartsmust be cleanedcarefullyand thoroughly before(andif necessaryduring)
construction and weldingprocedures, One moretime of cleaningmusttake placeafter
installation
in the fieldand immediately priorto insulation.
The lastcleaning(of all surfaces
not coveredby insulation) is to be carriedoutjust beforestart-upof the plant.

Sincesulfurattackis relatedto temperature (whichdistributes

itselfmoreor lessuniformly
withinthe metal),it is obvious, thatall cleaningand removalof oxidesmustcoverALL
SIDES,insideand outside,top and bottom.

4.1 Cleaningand Degreasing

Fo.rcleaningby washinguse ACETONE/ ALCOHOL,whichis to be appliedseveraltimes,
usinga new cleanrag each time (be aware,thatAcetone/ Alcoholacis'asa solventonlyto
removethe dirt etc. A rag soakedwith dirt cannotdo its job anymore.lt ratherdistributeithe
contaminationto formerlycleanspots,thanto actuallyremovethem).

The safetyregulationslocallyin forceare to be observedstrictlywhen workingwith Acetone

i Alcohol.

The cleaningproceduresare to be carriedout underpermanentsupervision by a Bertrams

specialistand confirmedby enteringthe respectivedata into the qualitycontrolcertificate.

4.2 Removalof greenish/ brown oxide films

In casethe methoddescribedin 4.1 aboveshouldnot producea metallicbrightsurface, the
top layerof the metalmust be removedmechanically by grinding.Use grindingclothof grain
size 220. For safe cleaningremoveapprox.0.1 mm, but ät leasias muöhas tö reachan
uninterrupted brightsurface. The grindingproceduremust be followedby washingwith
Acetone/ Alcoholas describedin 4.1 above.

The grindingand washingare to be carriedout underpermanentsupervisionby a Bertrams

specialistand confirmedby enteringthe respectivedata into the qualitycontrolcertificate.

5. Preparationof LC-Nickelfor welding

Sincethe immediateneighborhood of the weldingwill be heatedbeyondthe critical
temperatureof sulfurattack,this heatinfluenced zonemustbe cleanedbefore(andkept
cleanduring)all welding.

To excludeall possiblehazardsof destruction, bothsidesof the weldingedgemustbe

ground.mekllicbrightat a widthof at least50 mm. This whetheror notlhereis actuallyan
oxidefilm.Grindingand washingas describedin 4.2 above.

The washingwith Acetone/ Alcoholmustbe extendedbeyondthe groundareato covera

widthof at least500 mm on bothsides.

The preparation cleaningis to be carriedout underpermanentsupervision of a Bertrams

specialistand contirmedby enteringthe respective data intothe qualitycontrolcertificate.

6. Protectionof cleaned LC-Nickel

After all cleaningactivitiesand duringinterruptions
of work all nickelsurfacesare to be
coveredPolyethylenesheets to preventnew contamination (takecare, that the cleanside of
the sheetonlycomesintocontactwiththe nickel.Do not rollusedsheets.Foldthemin such
a way, that the clean surfacecomesinwards).
