Past simple – regular verbs
RULES

EXAMPLES
• They played tennis yesterday
Most verbs: verb + -ed
• I started to do excercise when I was 10 years old.
• My grandmother prayed for me.
EXAMPLES
• She closed the store yesterday.
Verbs ending in –e: add -d
• She danced a lot at the party yesterday.
• Last time, you believed that I had lied to you.
EXAMPLES
Verbs ending in consonant-vowel-
• The car stopped before the accident.
consonant (CVC): double final C + -ed
• The musicians planned their last concert almost a year ago.

EXAMPLE
Verbs ending in consonant + -y: cut –y + ied • They tried to talk to you last Monday.
• I studied all night for the last test

For regular verbs, there are three posible pronunciations of –ed endings

After all vowel sounds and after


After all voiceless consonants

cried, tried, hurried, weighed,


picked, hopped, laughed, decided, ended, landed,
smiled, planned, judged,
crossed, pushed, watched started, visited, waited
sneezed, lived
+ We use didn't (did not) to make negatives with the past simple

EXAMPLES
+ They didn't go to Spain this year.
+ We didn't get home until very late last night.
+ I didn't see you yesterday.
