DEAR PARENTS OF FUTURE GIRL SCOUT CAMPERS,
Howdy! My name is Shelby Sever (Fox, at camp) and I am the camp director at GSHCC’s Camp
Menzies. I started this position in May of 2019, and I can certainly say it’s been a thrilling ride
since then! Camp is such a truly unique and beautiful space to exist and grow in. Though our
landscape has changed over the past year, what camp can offer you and your girl certainly
has not. The camp team is planning for a phenomenal family camp season, and is also excited
to offer a weekly virtual option for your girl to enjoy.

Camp, in whatever form you or your girl may choose to enjoy it, is about giving yourself a safe
escape to recharge and reconnect. If you’re joining us in person, you’ll be able to shut out the
noise of the world and focus on your family in a peaceful, rustic environment. Think of it as
an unplugged vacation that we plan for you. If your girl is joining us virtually, she’ll be able to
connect with sister Girl Scouts from all over the country and make amazing camp memories

This year we’re redefining what camp means by simultaneously running family and virtual
camps. Yes, that means camp will look different this year. But why camp matters and what
camp can do for us is not different. Camp is about creating a community of individuals who
aren’t afraid to push themselves to try new things, who give themselves permission to be
silly and let go. Camp is about being able to let go of that tension you didn’t realize you’d been
holding. Camp is about stepping onto fresh soil (even if it’s in your backyard or a nearby park),
taking a deep breath, and letting nature do its thing.

It’s been an interesting year, to say the least. I am consistently grateful we exist in a time
where it’s significantly easier for us to connect with each other. The camp team has spent a
lot of time researching, planning, and preparing for a safe and engaging camp season. We are
so thrilled to be hosting weekly virtual camp sessions, and weekly family camp sessions.
We are excited to meet you, your girl, or maybe the entire family! We look forward to ensuring
whichever experience you choose for the summer is one of a kind.

Raise up the old flame at a campfire hosted by the camp directors. Sing
songs, perform skits or jokes, and maybe even roast a marshmallow at home!
For the first 30 minutes we encourage girls to sign on and join us for songs
and s’mores, and for the last hour we invite parents/guardians to stay to ask
questions, get clarifications, and hear more about how camp will run this year.

Experience camp—family style! Bring the whole family and work together to take on
challenges, play games, shoot a little archery*, ride a horse, and engage in a bit of

the view isn’t bad either. Fee includes staff-guided activities, staff certified in first aid,

Escape the city and travel back in time (or down a long dirt road) to a place that is free
of distractions and the chaos of day-to-day life. Let the trees and lakes rejuvenate you
and spend some quality time with the ones you love most. Skip rocks, sing songs,
roast a marshmallow, explore a trail, shoot slingshots or archery*, ride a horse, eat
a meal as a family, or paddle a canoe. At Camp Menzies, it is all about reconnecting

Communication, problem solving, group facilitation,
and program planning are just some of the many skills
participants will learn and put into practice. With the
guidance of the virtual camp staff, CIT participants
will work their way through the three-step program to
be able to plan and lead their fellow campers through
virtual workshops. Who knows? Maybe one day they’ll
have the chance to work at camp!
*Upon registration for these programs, CITs will receive information about virtual training which
will take place June 7-11, 2021. There is no fee to be a CIT, this experience is free to members.
Counselor-In-Training TRAINING
At the beginning of the season, CIT’s will attend a week-long virtual leadership
training to meet their fellow CIT’s and learn important facilitation and leadership
skills. After that, participants will be able to choose from our offered virtual
camps. CITs will have the ability to choose which programs they want to develop
and deliver programming for. Under the supervision and guidance of our virtual
camp staff, CIT’s will receive hands-on experience in facilitating meaningful and
memorable virtual workshops for Girl Scouts in grades K-8.

Traveling Companions serene River Camp in Coloma, CA*. Learn whitewater rafting
commands, maneuvers, and how to “read” moving water. After splashing your way
down the river, you will return to camp for an evening dinner and campfire. Raft
down a different section of the river the following day, and complete over 21 miles
of class II–III whitewater by the end of the trip! This is a camping experience in
tents. Fee includes lodging, some meals, activity and entrance fees, knowledgeable
expedition staff, program supplies, rafting gear, and a fun patch. Campers are
required to bring clothing, eating utensils (we provide bowls and spoons, water
bottles should be supplied by the campers), and personal items. Girls must be

NEW COURTRIGHT RESERVOIR BACKPACKING WITH OUTWARD BOUND
Beginner backpacking expeditions are designed to create a connection with nature
and newfound confidence in Girl Scouts. Surrounded by like-minded peers and
supportive instructors, girls build bonds with one another, begin to test their own
independence, and return home with new insights and skills to share. Based in
(near) the Courtright Reservoir, girls will expand their notions of what is possible,
translate challenging life experiences into positive personal achievement and
emerge as confident leaders. This is a backpacking experience under tarps.
Fee includes lodging, meals, activities and entrance fees, knowledgeable expedition
staff, backpacking gear, and a fun patch. Campers are required to bring clothing,
eating utensils (we provide bowls and spoons, water bottles should be supplied
by the campers), and personal items. *Must provide own transportation to and from

NEW SHADOW GLEN HORSE DAY CAMP

Camp sessions are from 8:00 am–12:00 pm or 9:00 am–1:00 pm, Monday through
Friday. Each camper is assigned their own horse for the week, and along with
riding and horsemanship, the week finishes with a musical drill show for family and
friends on Friday. Our camps guarantee all kids work with horses and participate in
horse-related activities. All counselors are certified wranglers and have experience
with children and equestrian activities. *Must provide own transportation to and
from Fair Oaks, CA.
