ELEMENTS AND PRONCIPLES OF ART

The elements and principles of art are the building blocks of all art. Every artwork or art
piece created comprises one or more elements of arts like line, shape, form, value,
color, texture, and space, as well as their differences among each other and how
MIMAROPA and Visayan Group of Islands artists applied these in their artworks.

ELEMENTS OF ART

Line - A mark drawn by any tool that marks as it moves across a surface. Lines can be:
long or short, thick or thin, rough or smooth, dotted, broken or solid.

Thick and Dotted and

Thin solid
They can make straight movements, zig-zags, waves or curls. They may be horizontal,
vertical, and diagonal.

waves or curls zig-zags horizontal vertical

Shape An area enclosed by line. It is 2 dimensional and can be geometric or organic.

Organic shapes have more complicated edges and are usually found in nature.

Forms Are 3-Dimesional. They occupy space or give the illusion that they occupy the
space.

Color is the most expressive element of art and is seen by the way light reflects of a
surface and also adds interest and reality to an artwork

Primary colors are red, yellow, and blue.

When you mix 2 primary colors together, you get a secondary color.

For example:

When you mix a primary and a secondary color together you get an intermediate
color.
For example:

Value- is the lightness and darkness of a surface. It is often referred to when shading.
Value is also important in the study of color.

Texture- is the actual surface feel or the simulated appearance of roughness, smoothness
and many others.

Space is the distance around, between, above, below, and within an object.

PRINCIPLES OF ARTS
Balance Refers to the visual of the elements of the composition. It is a sense that the
painting “feels stable and feels right”.

Contrast The difference between elements of art in the composition, such that each
element is made stronger in relation to the other.

Emphasis When the artist creates an area of the composition that is visually dominant
and commands the viewer’s attention.

PatternThe uniform repetition of any of the elements of art or any combination thereof.

MovementThe result of using the elements of art such that they move the viewer’s eye
around and within the image.

Rhythm Created by movement complied through the repetition of elements of art in a

non-uniform but organized way.

Unity/Variety is visually pleasing agreement among the elements in a design. It is the

feeling that everything in the work of art works together and looks like it fits.
