POWER CRISIS IN KARACHI

POWER CRISIS IN KARACHI
Karachi, and her people, are the victims of power breakdown
every summer. Starting from May, the load shedding reaches to
its peak in June. With the mercury rising and humidity levels
increasing, Karachiites have to work and sleep without
electricity, thanks to the KESC.

Once an institution of repute, KESC got corrupted with rapid
industrialization of the city. With money flowing in from every
nook and corner, and people investing in property and
infrastructure, KESC became a gold mine. It’s employees
became billionaire by providing illegal connections (kundas)
across the mega polis.

Possible causes of power breakdowns
1) Lack of power distribution infrastructure,

2) Old equipment,

3) Line-losses,

4) Inefficient staff,

5) The gap between power demand and supply widened with

expansion of the city

DISPUTE BETWEEN WAPDA N KESC RESULTS IN
MASS POWER BREAKDOWN

Life in the metropolis was seriously affected on Thursday when

a tussle between the WAPDA and the Karachi Electric Supply
Company (KESC) caused massive citywide power breakdowns
however; nobody worries about citizens of Karachi who are
badly affected by this tug of war. As the KESC blames WAPDA
and the WAPDA blames KESC.

Many hospitals called off operations and supplies from
hydrants were affected while students suffocated in their
institutions due to the power outage. Business and industry
also suffered due to the lack of electricity supply. Generators
kept on noisily running the whole day but even then markets
were almost empty due to the lack of power.

The massive power cut affected bazaars, businesses and homes
in the normally bustling economic hub and caused huge traffic
jams as signals went out of order. Faced with the acute power
shortage, Karachi’s industry is left with no option but to wait
for the formation of new government to see how it addresses
the woes caused by growing power deficit in the economic hub
of the country.

KARACHI BLACKED OUT OVER UNPAID BILLS
A row over unpaid bills sparked a huge power blackout in
Pakistan’s biggest city that left most of Karachi’s 12 million
residents without electricity The outage came after Pakistan’s
main power utility accused the electricity company supplying
the southern port of refusing to settle debts of more than half a
billion dollars.

Suggestions:

1) Power generation and power distribution sector should be

separated.

2) Power generation sector should be kept by the government

for revenue generation. Also if we analyze the system major
losses and corruption is in the distribution system

3) Power distribution sector should be privatized so it will take

care efficiently in maintaining the distribution system and in
revenue collection. After collection it can give the share of
power generation sector and keep its share.

4) By keeping power generation sector in the government

control government will have a permanent source of income
and it can control unnecessary profit making.

CONCLUSION

Since the KESC has not made any significant investment in the
improvement of generation and distribution systems,
suspension in power supply sparked fears of a violent reaction,
The breakdown caused the KANUPP and other local generating
units to trip, disconnecting supplies even to places like the
airport and the port. The notice made it clear that KESC would
bear the “sole responsibility” in the event of any damage to
public or private property caused by violence.
