INDIA
A presentation by Group 2
Play in India.
History of Games in India.
In India we’ve always made sense of the world around us through
stories.
A closer look at the practices and rituals associated with our very
peculiar art of storytelling reveals our limitless proclivity for play.
There’s evidence that our ancestors used toys and games as aids
to build interactivity into their stories.
History books are replete with instances of our kings sitting down
for a game of chaturanga, from which chess is believed to have
originated. Mythology attests to our penchant for games too,
evidenced by the numerous mentions of Shiva and Parvati playing
a round of lighthearted pachisi, scattered among our texts.
A game that originated in medieval
India, pachisi was traditionally
played on an embroidered, cross-
shaped fabric that served as a
board. Players throw cowrie shells
to determine the movement of
their pieces across the board. The
game is a race to the finish and up
to four participants can play at a
time.
Pallanguzhi is a traditional two-person
game that was born in present-day
Tamil Nadu and is still played in many
parts of southern India. It’s played on a
wooden board with 14 cups or pits and
kicks off with the equal distribution of
seeds. The players compete to
accumulate the maximum number of
seeds in their designated pits. The game
is supposed to help players build motor
skills and master arithmetic strategy.
Modern Games
India has a sports history that goes back thousands of
years.
Sports in India refers to the large variety of
games played in India, ranging from tribal games to
more mainstream sports such as field hockey,
kabaddi, cricket, badminton and football.
Ancient Indian texts acknowledge the presence of archery,
wrestling, swordsmanship and boxing. Some local
games like pehelwani or wrestling in the northern part
and kalarippayattu in the southern part.
India's diversity of culture, people, and tribes are reflected in
the wide variety of sporting disciplines in the country
Gaming in India.
Mobile usage is increasing worldwide, especially in India, where
people use their smartphones to do everything from ordering
groceries to conversing with friends to making business
transactions and gaming. With the advancement of technology in

this sector, this usage is expected to increase even more.

Over the years, mobile or smartphone gaming has cemented its

place among Indian gamers. According to market estimates, 9 out
of 10 gamers in India use mobiles to play. But as per a new report,
gamers in the country are slowly preferring a move towards
personal computers (PCs)
Games like PUBG Mobile and Ludo King have helped transform
the gaming segment in India.
PUBG Mobile, which has now been rebranded as ‘Battlegrounds
Mobile India’, pioneered the rise of multiplayer mobile gaming in
India, which was previously considered as a very data intensive
activity.
Ludo King attracted a new demographic of players (45 years and
older) that had been relatively lower in India and turned gaming
into mainstream entertainment and a social media alternative

One of the most ancient games that originated in India is Chess. Persians who
travelled to ancient India had picked up the game and named it as ‘Shatranj’.

sites of Indus valley civilisation. Its popularity grew with the British too.

However, many historians believe that Kho-Kho was famous for its run and chase
