ACT I
Scene 1

Setting: There are three rotatable, two-sided wooden boards erect on the stage. The front of the
boards are painted to depict the architecture of the French Quarter, colorful french-inspired
buildings with distinct balconies. The back of the first board, on the leftmost side of the stage, is
painted to depict a gated estate.

At Rise: EVELYN and ROSALINA walk onto the stage from the left, side-by-side.
TOURGUIDE 1 is hiding behind the leftmost wooden board.

EVELYN (enthusiastically.)
C’mon ladies, let’s quicken the pace. The first location of the tour is only a few more blocks
away.

ROSALINA (excitedly.)
I’m so excited! I’ve always wanted to do one of these tours.

(Enter CHIARA and MIRANDA side-by-side, left.)

MIRANDA
EVELYN, can you please slow down? These shoes may be cute, but they’re killing me. I think I
lost my pinky toe a few blocks back.

EVELYN
Stop being so dramatic, MIRANDA. We have to quicken the pace if we want to get there in time.

ROSALINA
Uh, EVELYN? We might have to stop for a second. DANI and TRISHA are way behind, look.

(ROSALINA stops and looks behind her while gesturing. MIRANDA,

EVELYN, and CHIARA stop. CHIARA takes her phone out of her purse
and starts texting.)

EVELYN
You must be kidding. Why are they that far behind?

ROSALINA
They stopped by one of those bars a while back to get a drink. They said it’d only take a second.
1– 1 – 2

EVELYN (annoyed.)
Oh my god, I swear they never listen. We have places to be people! I got an exclusive deal for
this ghost tour and I refuse to be late.

MIRANDA
Groupon is not exclusive, EVELYN.

EVELYN
Don’t even start with me, MIRANDA. I’ll have you know I–

(CHIARA quickly stops texting and puts her phone back in her purse.)

CHIARA
And we appreciate your effort EVELYN. MIRANDA’s just joking.

MIRANDA
Yeah, I just forgot to add the setup and punchline.

(CHIARA nudges MIRANDA.)

CHIARA
Oh look, here they come.

(Enter DANI and TRISHA side-by-side, left. They are holding plastic
drinking cups.)

TRISHA (excitedly)
We’re back! Who wants a sip?

EVELYN (aggressively.)
No! I already told you guys, we will be having drinks at the end of the night. That way, I won’t
have to deal with your drunk asses while I’m trying to enjoy the ghost tour.

MIRANDA
Too late now.

DANI
Can you like chill, EVELYN? It’s a bachelorette party. We just walked through Bourbon, how do
you expect us not to drink?

TRISHA
Yeah! You can’t just tempt fate.
1– 1 – 3

EVELYN (confused.)
Do you even know what that phrase means?

TRISHA
Um, I think s–

DANI
What she means to say is that you can’t tempt us with a good time and expect us not to take that
opportunity. It’s a bachelorette party, after all.

ROSALINA (annoyed.)
Can we please just get to the first location and enjoy our last moments with CHIARA as a free
woman?

TRISHA (surprised.)
CHIARA’s going to prison?! Who was gonna tell me?

(Turning to CHIARA.)

DANI
I need another drink…

MIRANDA
(Gesturing at TRISHA.)
CHIARA, how do you know this girl again?

EVELYN
Enough! No more drama. Tonight is CHIARA’s night and CHIARA’s night only. Let’s just
celebrate and enjoy our time together as bachelorette sisters.

DANI
Cheers to that!

TRISHA (loudly.)
Wooo!
(TRISHA and DANI toast their drinks.)

ROSALINA (excitedly.)
Let’s get hella lit!

(EVELYN, MIRANDA, CHIARA, TRISHA, and DANI all pause and

look at ROSALINA.)
1– 1 – 4

DANI
Did you just say “hella lit”?

ROSALINA
What? I thought it fit the context.

MIRANDA
Please never say that again. I think a little piece of me died hearing that.

EVELYN (frustratingly.)
My god, why is this such a mission?

CHIARA
Guys we really have to go if we want to get to the first location on time. Let’s go, let’s go!

(CHIARA gestures to everyone. EVELYN, ROSALINA, CHIARA,

MIRANDA, TRISHA, and DANI walk to the right of the stage, turning
the corner behind the last board. They walk back towards the left of the
stage, and as they walk behind the middle board, TOURGUIDE 1 rotates
the first board. TOURGUIDE 1 is now in front of the board, standing still.
EVELYN, ROSALINA, CHIARA, MIRANDA, TRISHA, and DANI
walk to the first board and turn the corner, placing them in front of the first
board.)

TRISHA
Damn girl, it’s gotta be hot as hell in that outfit. Want a sip?

(TRISHA holds out her cup to TOURGUIDE 1.)

DANI
No! TRISHA, that drink was expensive!

TRISHA
Oh shit, you’re right. Sorry girl, nevermind. Twelve bucks for a drink doesn’t come easy.

EVELYN
Can you guys shut up? You’re being so rude.

CHIARA
We’re so sorry, ma’am. They’re just a little–
1– 1 – 5

TOURGUIDE 1
The estate you see before you once stood as one of the most remarkably opulent brothels in the
New Orleans district.

TRISHA
(Raises her hand.)
Uh–miss? What does opulent mean?

EVELYN
(Looking back at TRISHA, annoyed.)
Jesus, TRISHA. It means rich and luxurious or lavish.

TOURGUIDE 1
The brothel belonged to Katherine Thompson, a renowned brothel madam during the late
nineteenth century. Thompson was originally born as Anna Cunningham in Ireland, however,
after immigrating to the United States after an affair with a sailor, she took on the name
Katherine Thompson. Katherine would eventually build an empire for herself working as a
prostitute in New Orleans. Within a decade, Katherine opened her own brothel, a successful
pursuit.

ROSALINA (enthusiastically.)
Slay, what a queen!

MIRANDA (annoyed.)
Stop.

TOURGUIDE 1 (excitedly.)
Katherine would make many influential friends through her business, and with their support, she
had a fantastically luxurious brownstone and marble brothel built. The house had white marble
fireplaces, French chandeliers, furniture made of beautifully crafted black mahogany with silk
fabric, velvet tapestries, and European antiques. The brothel housed some of the most expensive
girls in the city.

DANI
Girl was living the glamorous life.

TOURGUIDE 1
Indeed she was, however, this life of luxury would not be for long.

DANI
Damn, you got me all hyped up for nothing. Can’t have shit anymore.
1– 1 – 6

TOURGUIDE 1
Katherine had originally met a man soon after her arrival in New Orleans, however, their
relationship had remained professional until years later. The man was commonly known as
“Fred”, and was the black sheep of a respectable New Orleans family.

TRISHA
What does black sh–

EVELYN
(Quickly turning back to look at Trisha, annoyed.)
Nope, you’re done.

TRISHA
You don’t have to be so rude.
(Sipping her drink.)

TOURGUIDE 1
In the early years of the brothel, Fred kept the books and attracted business while living in the
brothel. The arrangement failed, and Katherine had him arrested for falsifying her signature on
checks. She would later drop the charges, however, their relationship would be left with strain
and dangerous tension. Their relationship further fell apart after Katherine paid significant
attention to a young admirer, who she received in her private rooms. Fred suspected that
Katherine had fallen in love with the man, and one morning, the situation escalated into Fred and
Katherine fighting in her room.

TRISHA
Okay, now I’m getting scared. Is Katherina gonna be okay?

ROSALINA
It’s a haunted murder tour TRISHA…

TRISHA
You never know ROSALINA.

CHIARA (frustratingly.)
I just want to hear the rest of the story!

TOURGUIDE 1
Katherine defended herself as much as she possibly could. She tore his clothes in defending
herself from his anger. Fred fatally stabbed Katherine eleven times. She lied in a pool of her own
blood.
1– 1 – 7

TOURGUIDE 1 (Cont.)
The brothel’s housekeeper heard the commotion and walked in on the scene. The only words that
came out of Fred’s mouth were “I had to do it.”

MIRANDA
Ooh that’s fucked up.

TOURGUIDE 1
Katherine had been dead for too long for anyone to help revive her. When police arrived, Fred
chose to turn himself in and was arrested. He later appeared in trial and received the verdict of
not guilty of Katherine’s murder on the grounds of self defense.

CHIARA (shockingly.)
No…you’re kidding!

MIRANDA (angrily.)
What? Self defense? The evidence was right there!

TOURGUIDE 1
Katherine never received her justice and continues to occupy the estate to this day. She is said to
be a guardian to women who are in danger of facing the same fate as her at the hands of a man.

CHIARA
Wow…
(MIRANDA, CHIARA, DANI, EVELYN, and TRISHA all stand in
silence for a couple of seconds.)

EVELYN
(Clapping while smiling.)
Awesome! Awesome job!

(CHIARA, MIRANDA, DANI, and TRISHA stare at EVELYN in shock and disgust.)

CHIARA (disgusted.)
What the hell, EVELYN?

EVELYN (excitedly.)
I told you I got an exclusive tour. Great job, ma’am! The costume, the makeup, the story,
everything! Just perfect. How much do people usually tip you?
1– 1 – 8

MIRANDA
(Shaking her head while putting her hand on her forehead in frustration.)
Christ. Ma’am, I’m so sorry our friend is socially fried.

CHIARA
(Taking her phone out of her pocket and looking down at it for a few
seconds.)
Hey guys, I think we have to get to the second location.

TOURGUIDE 1
(TOURGUIDE 1 looks directly at CHIARA and gets closer to her,
pushing past EVELYN and ROSALINA. She
points at her face in demand.)

Know his name. Frederick Morta. Be smart, girl.

(TOURGUIDE 1 puts her hand down. CHIARA, EVELYN, DANI,

and ROSALINA all turn to each other, facing away from TOURGUIDE 1.
They all stand in silence for a couple of seconds, shocked. TRISHA turns
to them, confused.)

TRISHA
What? Am I missing something?

MIRANDA
(Looking at CHIARA.)
Why does your fiance share the same last name with a murderer?

ROSALINA
(Looking at MIRANDA.)
It could just be a coincidence.
(TOURGUIDE 1 walks behind the board, unnoticed.)

MIRANDA
(Looking at ROSALINA.)
Have you ever heard of the last name Morta? I sure as hell haven’t until you started dating
BRIAN.

CHIARA
Okay, so what? Even if they are related, what does it matter? It’s not like he’s some murderer or
something. That’s not hereditary.
1– 1 – 9

MIRANDA
It’s bad luck, that’s what it is. And did you hear what the tour guide said? She said to be smart.
It’s a warning. I knew it, it knew it!

CHIARA (frustrated.)
You knew what?

MIRANDA
Ever since you met BRIAN, you’ve barely hung out with us. Up until recently, I thought you
hated the idea of marriage. Now you’re rushing into one not even a year in. We don’t even know
him. I could sense that he was bad news, I knew it!

CHIARA (surprised.)
Bad news?

TRISHA
Ooh this shit is juicy.

ROSALINA
TRISHA!

CHIARA
That doesn’t scream bad news. It just means I want to focus my attention on him.

MIRANDA
That’s the problem. You need to be able to balance your friendships and your romantic
relationships and you aren’t.
EVELYN
MIRANDA, maybe now’s not the tim–

CHIARA
I am able to balance them both. We’re all here together now, aren’t we?

MIRANDA (sarcastically.)
Hallelujah!

DANI
Cheers to that!

TRISHA
Woo!
(DANI and TRISHA cheers their drinks.)
1– 1 – 10

EVELYN
Guys, she’s being sarcastic.

DANI TRISHA
Ooh. Ooh.

MIRANDA
Don’t act like you haven’t been texting him this whole time. Even when he’s not here, he wants
your attention.

CHIARA
I promised I’d send him my location every so often.

ROSALINA
That’s kind of weird…

MIRANDA
That’s what I’m saying!

CHIARA
No, you know what? Now I get it. MIRANDA paid off the tour guide to say his last name just so
she could bring this up.

MIRANDA
I’m crazy, but I’m not that crazy. If I have a problem with something, I’ll say it to your face. And
you know that.

EVELYN
(Looking at CHIARA.)
She’s right, I’ve had to learn that the hard way.

MIRANDA
Just ask her yourself then if you don’t believe me.

(CHIARA and MIRANDA turn around to face the where the tour
guide was.)

CHIARA (confused.)
Where’d she go?

DANI
You guys probably scared away the tour guide.
1– 1 – 11

EVELYN
But my tip!

ROSALINA
Alright guys, enough. CHIARA’s getting married, and that’s that. We’re here to go on the ghost
tour and–

DANI (enthusiastically.)
Get fucked up!

(DANI and TRISHA raise their drinks in the air.)

TRISHA
Woo!

ROSALINA
Let’s just enjoy the rest of the night. You guys love spooky shit, don’t let some name ruin the fun
we have planned.

(CHIARA and MIRANDA cross their arms.)

EVELYN
Yeah, the night’s far from over. We still have two more locations to go to. You can tear each
other's heads off later if you really want.

DANI
I call recording it!

(MIRANDA smiles.)

MIRANDA
Okay but imagine the views we’d get if people see a bride and a maid of honor throwing hands.

DANI
She’s got a point. If it goes viral, you can pay off your wedding through sponsorships.

(CHIARA cracks a smile.)

CHIARA
I’d much rather prefer to go on Dr. Paul.

(MIRANDA laughs.)
1– 1 – 12
CHIARA (Cont.)

But you guys are right. Tonight is about having fun.

(CHIARA takes out her phone from her purse and shows MIRANDA,
DANI, TRISHA, EVELYN, and ROSALINA the time.)

We gotta hurry and get to the second location if we want to be on schedule for the rest of the
tour.

TRISHA
Woo, let’s get this shit poppin!

(Holding her drink in the air.)

EVELYN
(Gesturing at the girls.)
Let’s go, let’s go!

(CHIARA, MIRANDA, TRISHA, DANI, EVELYN, and ROSALINA all

quickly walk to the right and off the stage.)

CURTAIN
1– 2 – 13

ACT I
Scene 2

Setting: The three rotatable, two-sided wooden boards are still on the stage. The front of the first
(leftmost) and third (rightmost) boards, depicting the architecture of the French Quarter, are
facing the audience. The back of the second board (middle) is facing the audience, depicting a
realtor’s office.

At Rise: The girls walk onto the stage from the right and stop at the third board. They are in a
line, grouped into twos. The groups are: EVELYN and ROSALINA, CHIARA and MIRANDA,
and DANI and TRISHA. DANI and TRISHA are still holding their drinks. TOURGUIDE 2 is
behind the second board.

MIRANDA
Can anyone explain to me why the hell this location is on the whole other side of the French
Quarter?
(Waving her hand like a fan towards her face.)

It’s hotter than the devil’s asshole out here.

CHIARA
Yeah, I’ve been chafing for so long I think my inner thighs might start a fire.

EVELYN
(Looking at CHIARA.)
Ew.

CHIARA
(Looking at EVELYN.)
What? It’s true.

ROSALINA
We’re almost there guys.
(EVELYN, ROSALINA, CHIARA, MIRANDA, DANI, and TRISHA all
continue to walk. They arrive at the middle board and stop.)

MIRANDA
Wait a damn minute. Why the hell did we arrive at a real estate office?

CHIARA (frustrated.)
EVELYN, I thought you knew the directions.
1– 2 – 14

EVELYN
Guys, I swear we’re at the right place.

CHIARA
Let’s make sure then.
(CHIARA takes out her phone from her purse and looks down at it.
EVELYN, ROSALINA, DANI, and TRISHA all huddle around her,
looking down at it. TOURGUIDE 2 walks in from behind the middle
board and stands in front of it while the girls are not looking.)

MIRANDA
I guess we are at the right place.

ROSALINA
Then where’s the tour guide?
(EVELYN, ROSALINA, CHIARA, MIRANDA, TRISHA, and DANI all
go back into the original order of the group.)

DANI
Oh shit. They’re right here!

TRISHA
Eek! Your outfit is hideous, girl.
(Tourguide 2 stands in silence.)

MIRANDA
It’s literally a costume, TRISHA.

TRISHA
Well it’s a hideous costume, MIRANDA.
EVELYN
I’m surprised you even know what the word hideous even means.

TRISHA
(Putting her hand on her chest.)
I’m offended.

CHIARA (frustrated.)
Why can we never just let the tour guide do their job?

CHIARA (Cont.)
(Looking at TOURGUIDE 2.)
We’re ready when you are ma’am.
1– 2 – 15

TOURGUIDE 2
You may be wondering why you all are at a realtor’s office.Well, like most places in New
Orleans, it doesn’t go without having a dark history behind it. It was only 40 years ago that this
location was the site of a murder.

MIRANDA
(Sarcastically gasps while putting her hand on her chest.)
No! We’re at a murder site on a ghost tour?
(TOURGUIDE 2 gives MIRANDA a disgusted, confused look.)

CHIARA
Disrespectful ass.
(Looking at MIRANDA, angrily, while elbowing her.)

TOURGUIDE 2
This office employed some of the top realtors in the New Orleans district, but it would come at
the expense of a life to realize one of its agent’s sinister intentions. Dominic, the agent we are
focusing on, was well-known throughout the area. He presented himself as kind and caring,
which helped him in selling properties and in making connections. Dominic was known to be the
“major of the town,” everyone knew him and he knew everyone. Him and his family were
well-known in the area, presenting themselves as the perfect American family. Dominic was a
hardworking American man who had a beautiful wife and three adorable children. However,
Dominic’s flawless public facade masked his frightening, private intentions.

ROSALINA (enthusiastically.)
Ooh now I’m curious. Go on!

TOURGUIDE 2
As Dominic’s time as a realtor progressed, his hunger and drive for power grew. It was no longer
about kindness and care, it was about getting what he desired. He began to prey on the wives of
his past male clients. He’d use his kind and caring demeanor in persuading them into having a
sexual relationship with him.

MIRANDA
What a bum!

TOURGUIDE 2
For years, this worked out for Dominic up until one of the wives he had pursued got pregnant.

MIRANDA
Ha ha! That’s what you get.
(Looking at the real estate office while fake spitting at it.)
1– 2 – 16

CHIARA
(Embarrassed, looking at MIRANDA.)
MIRANDA! Are you an animal?

DANI
(Disgusted, looking at MIRANDA.)
Ew!

MIRANDA
What? It was fake.

ROSALINA
Okay, but she’s right. Who couldn’t see this one coming?

EVELYN (loudly.)
Anyways!

TOURGUIDE 2
Her name was Lisa Carter. She was married to a musical performer and had moved to the New
Orleans area from Metairie to further his career in the jazz scene. Her husband has found success
after the move, which left her alone most days while he was practicing for events or performing
at them. She was an easy target for Dominic. Her and Dominic’s relationship remained quiet
until she told him that she was pregnant with his child. Dominic questioned the father of the
child and her intentions behind the issue.

TRISHA (angrily.)
Her intentions?! He questioned her intentions?

EVELYN
The word you're looking for is ironic.
(TRISHA gives EVELYN an annoyed glare.)

TOURGUIDE 2
He believed that Lisa had fallen in love with him and wanted to start a new life with him. The
child would be her outlet to that new life. She wanted to be the wife of a well-known, wealthy
man. She wanted that perfect life he had presented to the world with his wife and children. She
was delusional, he said. He wanted her to get rid of it.

DANI
This is…a mess.
(Waving her hands in the air dramatically.)
1– 2 – 17

TOURGUIDE 2
She argued to keep the child, but he eventually convinced her to get rid of it. He gave her a few
hundred dollars to deal with the…situation. They had planned for Lisa to take a bus to a clinic a
couple of hours away from New Orleans in order to not gain suspicion. But, when the day finally
came, Lisa changed her mind last-minute upon arriving at the clinic. She decided to go to
Dominic’s office. By the time she had arrived, it was near closing-time. Lisa stormed in and
began shouting at Dominic about keeping the child. Afraid of who would hear, Dominic dragged
Lisa into his office. The confrontation escalated and in a fit of rage, Dominic strangled Lisa.

(EVELYN, ROSALINA, CHIARA, MIRANDA, TRISHA, and DANI all

gasp in shock.)

ROSALINA (upset.)
No!

DANI
I need another drink.

TRISHA
Yas another drink! Woo!

CHIARA
(Placing her hand on her forehead.)
I’m beginning to question my choices in friendships right about now.

MIRANDA
(Looking at TOURGUIDE 2.)
So he got caught, right?

TOURGUIDE 2
Yes, he did.

MIRANDA
At least that’s a good thing.

TOURGUIDE 2
But his connections and power allowed him to be let free. Any witnesses at the scene were
bribed. He hired a powerful lawyer. And he shared a friendship with the judge.

MIRANDA (upset.)
No, you’re kidding!
1– 2 – 18

ROSALINA
Wow…

CHIARA
I would say I’m surprised, but I’m not.

TOURGUIDE 2
The ghost of Lisa lives in this building to this day.

ROSALINA
Poor girl.

TOURGUIDE 2
She is said to be a guardian to women who are in danger of facing the same fate as her at the
hands of a man.

CHIARA
Huh, the last ghost lady said the same thing.

TRISHA
Spooky.

MIRANDA
(Looking at CHIARA.)
Maybe it’s a sign.

CHIARA
(Looking at MIRANDA.)

Shut up, MIRANDA. Don’t start again.

MIRANDA
(Looking at TOURGUIDE 2.)
But wait a damn minute, going back to the story, didn’t you say this was only about 40 years
ago? So he could still be walking free to this day?

TOURGUIDE 2
Yes.

MIRANDA
I can’t believe he killed someone and he just gets to walk free.
1– 2 – 19

EVELYN
A pregnant someone, at that.

CHIARA
What’s his name? I wanna search this a-hole up.

ROSALINA
Yeah, now I’m kind of curious.

TOURGUIDE 2
(Looking at CHIARA.)
His name is Dominic Morta. Be wise, girl.

CHIARA
(Looking at MIRANDA, angrily.)
Oh goddammit, MIRANDA. Are you joking?

MIRANDA
Okay, I know what it looks like, but I legit didn’t set this shit up. I swear on my pinky toe.

ROSALINA
That sounds a lot like what most guilty people would say.

TRISHA
(Looking at MIRANDA.)
Whoever denied it supplied it, MIRANDA.

MIRANDA
(Looking at TRISHA, confused.)
Did you just make a fart joke?

TRISHA
So you did do it!
(EVELYN, ROSALINA, CHIARA, MIRANDA, DANI, and TRISHA all
slowly begin to huddle closer to each other as the argument progresses,
facing away from TOURGUIDE 2. TOURGUIDE 2 disappears behind the
middle board without anyone noticing.)

CHIARA (angrily.)
Did you really pay off the tour guides to mention my fiance’s last name so you could make his
family sound like a bunch of crazy murders? Well I’m not going anywhere! I know you don’t
like him, but you didn’t have to ruin my bachelorette party to get your point across.
1– 2 – 20

MIRANDA (offended.)
Why would I ever ruin your bachelorette party? How much of a bad person do you think I am?

CHIARA
Bad enough to try and do this. I wouldn’t put it past you. You know what? I’ll give it to you. This
idea was pretty clever. But was it worth it?

MIRANDA
I’m gonna choose to ignore what you just said and pretend I’m not offended so I can defend
myself. CHIARA, I’m a broke bitch. Where would I get the money to bribe a bunch of tour
guides? And plus, what we all fail to consider is that EVELYN set this whole tour up.

EVELYN
She’s right. She had no access to talk to the tour guides beforehand and neither did I…I got a
Groupon for it.

MIRANDA
(Pointing and looking at EVELYN.)
I knew it!

EVELYN
(Glaring at MIRANDA.)
Anyways… she couldn’t have bribed them.

MIRANDA
Told you!

CHIARA
Okay fine. But even if I did believe you guys, that doesn’t explain why these tour guides keep
mentioning BRIAN’s last name. It’s a rare last name. I never even heard of the last name
“Morta” until I met him.
(Looking at EVELYN.)
EVELYN, are you sure you didn’t happen to mention his last name when securing the tour?

EVELYN
(Looking at CHIARA.)
No, I only signed up for it using my name and last name. I swear.

ROSALINA
Then what the hell?
1– 2 – 21

EVELYN
(Looking at CHIARA.)
Here, CHIARA, why don’t you take out your phone and search up those two murder’s names
that the tour guides mentioned to see if they were real.

CHIARA
Alright.
(Taking out her phone from her purse and looking down at it. EVELYN,
ROSALINA, MIRANDA, DANI, and TRISHA all look down
at the phone.)
Frederick Morta.
(CHIARA begins typing on her phone.)

DANI
Find one that says dot org or something fancy like that. Those are usually reputable.

ROSALINA
(Pointing at the phone’s screen.)
Tap that one. That one is a good source.
(CHIARA taps the phone’s screen. She slowly scrolls for a few seconds.)

CHIARA (distressed.)
Okay, wow. So that guy really is real. They have copies of the legal documents and everything.

EVELYN
Search up the next guy, Dominick Morta.
(CHIARA types on her phone and then scrolls.)

CHIARA
There’s dozens of articles, what the hell?

MIRANDA
The tour guide said he was super well known in the area. Must’ve been the talk of the town when
it happened.

CHIARA
We still don’t know that for sure.

ROSALINA
(Pointing at the phone’s screen.)
That one looks good.
1– 2 – 22

(CHIARA taps the phone’s screen. She slowly scrolls for a few seconds.
CHIARA begins to get visibility upset.)

CHIARA
Oh my god.

EVELYN
Uh..hey, listen. Even if that guy did do it, it doesn’t mean he’s related to BRIAN.

ROSALINA
Why don’t we search his name up and his kids? That’ll tell us if he’s related to him or not.

CHIARA
Okay, fine.
(CHIARA taps the phone’s screen and scrolls for a few seconds.
CHIARA, MIRANDA, EVELYN, ROSALINA, TRISHA, and DANI all
Gasp. They become silent for a few seconds.)
So he is the son of a murderer…

MIRANDA
I’m sorry, gir–

CHIARA
Just because he’s the son of a murderer doesn’t mean he’s one himself.
(CHIARA quickly slips her phone back into her purse.)
MIRANDA
That’s true, but don’t you question why he didn’t tell you? Isn’t it important for him to let you
know that since you two are getting married?

CHIARA
He tells me that I am always making a big deal out of nothing. He probably just doesn’t want me
to start a fight over it.

MIRANDA
Excuse me? He says what?

CHIARA
He says I always try to play the victim and make it about myself when talking about serious
stuff. If I didn't do that, he wouldn’t have to react so badly.

MIRANDA (angrily.)
Oh hell no. What does he do to you?
1– 2 – 23

EVELYN
CHIARA, tell me he doesn’t hurt you.

CHIARA (annoyed.)
Guys, you’re being overdramatic. A few fights here and there aren’t the biggest deal. And yeah,
I’ll admit he gets pretty angry sometimes, but he wouldn’t hurt me.

MIRANDA
If he cared about you, he wouldn’t find a reason to get into these fights with you. And he
especially wouldn’t get angry at you and blame you.

CHIARA
I’m not a damsel in distress, thank you. In fact, he spoils me and treats me right. Anything I
want, boom, he gets me.

ROSALINA
CHIARA, it sounds like he’s replacing material things for actual love and you don’t see it.

CHIARA
Listen guys, the bottom line is that we’re getting married tomorrow and that’s that. He is not the
same person as his ancestors or his father. He’s not a murderer. This night has been a
rollercoaster, can we please just go to Bourbon Street? I need a drink.

EVELYN
But my plans will be way out of whack! We have dinner reservations after the tour. I perfectly
scheduled a time slot right after dinner so we could get…well…wasted.

TRISHA
(Chanting.)
Woo! Bourbon! Bourbon! Bourbon!

DANI
I’m down with that.

CHIARA
Fine, fine. There’s no point in ruining the schedule. Let’s just hope this next location doesn’t
mention anyone else related to my future husband.
(Laughing.)
ROSALINA
Hey, it’s probably just a coincidence. They’re scary murder ghost stories that not everyone
knows about. It’s a good marketing ploy to attract customers.
1– 2 – 24

MIRANDA
We can finish the tour, but that doesn’t mean we are just gonna gloss over what you just told us.
We will be addressing our concerns with you later, whether you like it or not. Marriage is a big
deal, you need to be sure you’re making the right decision.

CHIARA
Yeah, yeah. Fine, whatever. Let’s go!

EVELYN
Ma’am I’m so sorry about–
(Turning around towards where TOURGUIDE 2 was standing.)
Where’d she go?

DANI
No idea.

ROSALINA
Weird. You’d think they’d say goodbye or at least remind us of our next location.

EVELYN
I guess these people really don’t like tips.

CHIARA
Let’s go! Let’s go!

(CHIARA gestures for everyone to start walking. EVELYN, ROSALINA,

CHIARA, MIRANDA, DANI, and TRISHA all walk to the left of and off
the stage.)

CURTAIN
1– 3 – 25

ACT I
Scene 3

Setting: The three rotatable, two-sided wooden boards are still on the stage. The front of the first
(leftmost) and second (middle) boards, depicting the architecture of the French Quarter, are
facing the audience. The back of the third board (rightmost) is facing the audience, depicting a
two-story restaurant with a balcony.

At Rise: The girls walk onto the stage from the left and stop at the second board. They are in a
line, grouped into twos. The groups are: EVELYN and ROSALINA, CHIARA and MIRANDA,
and DANI and TRISHA. DANI and TRISHA are still holding their drinks. TOURGUIDE 3 is in
front of the third board.

CHIARA
We ended up at a restaurant?

MIRANDA
Another random ass location, great.

ROSALINA
Hey, as long as the story is interesting, I don’t care.

TRISHA
How much you guys wanna bet another one of BRIAN’s family member’s are part of this story?

DANI
TRISHA, don’t be so rude…twenty bucks.

EVELYN
Guys, enough. I think the tour guide is waiting for us.
(EVELYN, ROSALINA, CHIARA, MIRANDA, DANI, and TRISHA all
walk towards the third board and stop upon arrival.)
Hi there! Do you work here? I think a tour guide is supposed to meet us here for a haunted ghost
tour. Have you seen someone dressed in a god-awful costume?

TOURGUIDE 3
Someone died here, y’know?

EVELYN
I mean we’re kinda all here for a ghost tour so I’d assume…

TOURGUIDE 3
They died here a couple of years back. Landed right where you’re standing.
1– 3 – 26

(EVELYN steps back in shock. ROSALINA, CHIARA, MIRANDA,

DANI, and TRISHA follow, gasping.)

EVELYN (shocked.)
Jesus christ!

MIRANDA
Did you say landed?

TOURGUIDE 3
They were up there.
(TOURGUIDE 3 points at the restaurant’s balcony and look up.)

MIRANDA
Oh…yeah. That’d make sense.

ROSALINA
I’m gonna guess that you're our tour guide.

CHIARA
(Looking at MIRANDA.)
I wonder why each tour guide we’ve gotten has had such different approaches to telling the
stories. You’d think they’d be uniform or something.

DANI
Not in NOLA, baby.

MIRANDA
Who cares, just let them do it how they do it.

TOURGUIDE 3
Her name was Ruth Hill.
(Looking back at the restaurant.)
She met him while serving at the restaurant.

TOURGUIDE 3
He came in one day and she was his server. He ordered a po-boy and a side of fries. He was
friendly, and so was she. He liked her, so he tipped her $20. The meal was only $15.

TOURGUIDE 3
He came in for a second time. It was a slow day that day and she was on her break. He asked her
to sit with him. She remembered his kindness, and so she did. They talked while on her whole
break. Talking was easy, and everything flowed. They both lived in New Orleans for their whole
1– 3 – 27

TOURGUIDE 3 (Cont.)
lives. They both had a difficult family situation. They both loved snowballs. They both hated
crawfish. By the time her break was over, she had given him her phone number. He called the
next day and asked her out on a date.

TRISHA
Aw, that's kind of sweet.

EVELYN
He was literally a killer.

TOURGUIDE 3
On their first date he took her out to a nice restaurant. One of those with cloth napkins and glass
bottles of water. Afterwards, they went to the theme park in City Park. They talked and rode
rides for hours. They started officially dating shortly after. He’d visit her at work on her breaks
and bring her nice gifts.
ROSALINA
Ugh it sucks to know how this turns out.

TOURGUIDE 3
They’d get into their fights every so often, but hey, every couple got into fights, right? She
thought their meeting was fate. She thought they were perfect together. But their fighting got
worse over time. One day, they were arguing about her turning off her phone while out with
friends. The next day, she didn’t come home. She had to close that day, and so she stayed late in
the AMs at her job to avoid him. He eventually showed up to her job and found her on the
balcony. They began to argue. As their arguing escalated, he began to get physical. She tried
fighting back, but he overpowered her. He was bigger than her, and all she could do was scratch
at him. She lost… and he pushed her off the balcony.

CHIARA
God, all of these stories have to do with murders of women.

MIRANDA
Or that men are trash.

TOURGUIDE 3
No one ever saw. It was a ruled as a suicide.
(MIRANDA looks at CHIARA with concern.)
Her ghost is here. Right now. Warning them.

MIRANDA
Warning who?
1– 3 – 28

TOURGUIDE 3
His next victim.

MIRANDA
What? Who? Whos next victim?

TOURGUIDE 3
BRIAN Morta’s.
(TOURGUIDE 3 points at CHIARA. CHIARA pushes past EVELYN and
ROSALINA to try and get closer to TOURGUIDE 3.)

CHIARA (angrily.)
The hell do you people think you are, huh? Spewing this shit? What do you have against me or
my fiance, calling him murderer? I should sue this whole touring company for slander. You
people have ruined my whole night.

TOURGUIDE 3 (sternly.)
Listen, girl. Don’t be blind. Don’t make our mistakes. Don’t trust them.

CHIARA (offended.)
Excuse me? You don’t even know me, lady.

TOURGUIDE 3
Do not trust him. You can only save yourself, we can’t save you. Take this. Be wise with what
you do with this.
(Placing a fingernail in CHIARA’s hand.)

CHIARA
(Looking down at the nail.)
What the hell? I think I’m gonna vomit.
(TOURGUIDE 3 begins to walk away.0

EVELYN
What did she give you?

It’s a gross ass fingernail. It’s all bloody.

MIRANDA (disgusted.)
Eww.
1– 3 – 29

ROSALINA (confused.)
A bloody fingernail?

CHIARA
(CHIARA notices TOURGUIDE 3 walking away. She follows after
TOURGUIDE 3.)
Hey, where do you think you’re going? What is this gross shit you dirty–
(TOURGUIDE 3 goes behind the first board, disappearing. CHIARA
walks up to the building and goes to the side of it to see where
TOURGUIDE 3 went.)
What the hell? Where’d she go? She’s not here.

MIRANDA
Wait what? She just disappeared?

CHIARA
If you don’t believe me, look for yourself.
(MIRANDA walks up to where CHIARA is. She looks to the side of the
building.)

MIRANDA
Holy shit, she’s right. The alley’s empty. What the hell is happening?
(EVELYN’s phone rings. She picks up the phone.)

EVELYN
Hello?
(Nodding her head while listening to the person on the call.)

MIRANDA
(Looking at EVELYN, upset.)
You’re kidding right? Some woman just disappeared into the void and you’re on a phone call?
(EVELYN puts her finger up to her mouth to signal for MIRANDA to be
quiet.)

EVELYN
No, we did arrive on time. We just finished with the tour and saw the last tour guide…No-show
fee? What are you, a doctor’s office? I told you, we just did the whole tour. Ask your tour guides.

TRISHA
(Looking at DANI.)
Who is it?
1– 3 – 30

DANI
(Looking at DANI.)
I’m guessing the tour guide company.

EVELYN
What do you mean we only had one tour guide? We had three of them, I have witnesses!
(Pausing for a few seconds.)
We literally did show up. We went to an estate, a real estate office, and a restaurant…Those
weren’t the locations we were supposed to go to? Then why the hell did we go there?
(Pausing for a few seconds.)
Oh you don’t know? You know what? I’m not crazy and screw you, you’re not getting another
cent from me!
(Hanging up the phone, angrily.)

ROSALINA
What happened?

EVELYN
The tour guide company said we didn’t show up. It makes no sense. I literally memorized the
addresses beforehand so I wouldn’t have to waste battery on my phone using a gps. I wanted to
use the battery to take photos. Wait, hold on.
(Looking down at her phone, tapping on the screen.)
See? The addresses are right here!

MIRANDA
(Looking down at EVELYN’s phone.)
Those locations are not the same as the ones we just went to, EVELYN.

ROSALINA
Maybe your memory just got fuzzy.

EVELYN
No, it didn’t.

CHIARA
Not to interrupt, but I am still holding a bloody fingernail.

DANI (disgusted.)
Yuck! Why are you still holding it? Throw it out!
1– 3 – 31

EVELYN
Wait a second, CHIARA. Open your hand, let me take a look.
(CHIARA opens her hand. EVELYN looks down at the nail and thinks for
a few seconds.)

CHIARA (confused.)
Uh…ok?

EVELYN
The nail is bloody.

MIRANDA
Yes, EVELYN. We’ve established this.

EVELYN
She tried fighting back, but all she could do was scratch at him. Do you see where I’m getting at?

TRISHA
No.

EVELYN
The nail is bloody because she used her nails to scratch him. That’s the third victim’s nail. That’s
the murderer’s blood on the nail.
CHIARA
Don’t you dare say what I think you’re about to say.

EVELYN
It’s BRIAN’s blood on the nail.

CHIARA (angrily.)
You didn’t just say that. You’re insane to even think that.

EVELYN
She was warning you, CHIARA. Those women claimed that they were guardians who were there
to warn women in danger of facing the same fates as they did.

CHIARA (tiredly.)
I’m so tired of this, guys.
1– 3 – 32

EVELYN
No, listen. I know I sound out of my mind right now, but maybe you’re the woman in danger.
The guardians guided us to those other locations to try and warn you. That would explain my
fuzzy memory with the locations.

CHIARA
Dear god, we’ve officially gone off the deep end.

MIRANDA
No, for once, I agree with EVELYN. Just think about what the last tour guide said. Everything
she said was super specific. Everything she said about BRIAN makes sense.

CHIARA
(Crossing her arms, looking down.)
No, it doesn’t.
MIRANDA
(Looking at CHIARA.)
You said he spoils you. She said he spoiled her. You said you got into arguments here and there.
She did with him too.

CHIARA
(Looking at MIRANDA.)
Okay so just because he treats me to nice things means they’re right? And just because we get
into arguments here and there, like every single couple in the entire world does, the story is true
and he’s a murderer? She also said they both hated pralines. He told me he loves pralines.
There’s flaws here people!

MIRANDA
He’s lying to you, CHIARA!

ROSALINA
CHIARA, she even mentioned how their last argument was about her turning off her phone
while hanging out with her friends the night before. You literally sent BRIAN your location
earlier because you said he wanted you to.

CHIARA
Other couples do that all the time. Even parents with their kids. It shows how much they care
about them.
1– 3 – 33

ROSALINA
He’s not your parent, CHIARA. And you’re not his kid. You’re supposed to be his equal, his
fiance.

CHIARA
Yeah, yeah. I get it. Even if I did agree with you guys, it still doesn’t confirm him being a
murderer. It just means he’s flawed and has…similarities…with a murderer.

DANI
That’d be enough to make me run.

CHIARA
(Looking down at the nail in her hand.)
All of that still doesn’t explain the nail. Who knows if she even lost a nail?

MIRANDA
Okay, then search it up. Search up “Ruth Hill death.” That’s her name.
(CHIARA takes out her phone and starts typing. She looks up after
a couple of seconds. She puts her phone away and looks down at the nail,
silent. MIRANDA looks at CHIARA, concerningly.)
CHIARA, please. The truth is right in front of you. Him and his family are fucking cursed. His
whole bloodline.

ROSALINA
(Looking at CHIARA.)
Be smart, girl.

EVELYN
(Looking at CHIARA.)
Be wise with your next few choices.

MIRANDA
(Looking at CHIARA.)
And do not make the same mistakes they made by trusting a Morta.

(DANI and TRISHA look at CHIARA.)

DANI TRISHA
Please. Please.
1– 3 – 34

CHIARA
(CHIARA stares at the ground for a few seconds then looks up at the
group.)

I–
(CHIARA’s phone buzzes in her purse. She gets out her phone from her
purse and looks down at the screen for a few seconds. She looks up with a
worried look on her face.)

MIRANDA
Who is it, CHIARA?

CHIARA
It’s BRIAN.

EVELYN
What’d he say?

CHIARA
He wants me to send my location…

EVELYN
CHIARA…

CHIARA
Do you guys really think he might kill me?

TRISHA
(Raising her hand.)
I do!

CHIARA
(Looking down at her phone.)
Then what do I do?

MIRANDA
You trust us.
(Holding out her hand towards CHIARA’s phone.)

CHIARA
(Taking a deep breath in, uncertain.)
Okay…
1– 3 – 35

(Handing her phone to MIRANDA.)

MIRANDA
Good.
(Throwing CHIARA’s phone on the floor and stomping on it.)

EVELYN
You could’ve just turned her phone off. Would’ve done the same thing.

MIRANDA
Nope. Not taking any chances.

CHIARA (distressed.)
What if he finds out we went here? He’s gonna know something’s up when I don’t respond to
him. We’re supposed to be getting married tomorrow!

MIRANDA
The wedding’s off.

EVELYN
We need to go to the police station right now. We have the evidence to bring that girl justice.
(Grabbing CHIARA’s hand and starts walking with her slightly towards the left of
the stage.)

CHIARA
Wait!
(Pulling out of EVELYN’s grasp and stopping to look at ROSALINA,
MIRANDA, DANI, and TRISHA.)
Guys, I’m sorry I have been so stubborn and didn’t seen the warning signs soon–

ROSALINA
There’s no signs to point to a murderous fiance, CHIARA.

CHIARA
And I’m sorry I haven’t talked to you guys much this year. I actually really missed you guys.

EVELYN
We don’t blame you, CHIARA.

DANI
Yeah, we love you CHIARA.
1– 3 – 36

TRISHA
Totally.

CHIARA
Aw. I love you guys too.

TRISHA
(Opening her arms for a hug.)
Woo! Group hu–
MIRANDA
(Looking at CHIARA, EVELYN, ROSALINA, DANI and TRISHA.)
Aye! Have we forgotten that we’re dealing with a murderer here? Save the sincere shit for later.
Let’s go, bitches.

EVELYN
Oh shit, you’re right.

ROSALINA
Let’s go, let’s go!

MIRANDA
This family's long-line of murdering innocent women is over. It’s ending once and for all.

CHIARA (strongly)
Tonight!

(CHIARA, MIRANDA, ROSALINA, EVELYN, DANI, and TRISHA all

lock hands and run to the left of the stage. BRIAN enters left.)

BRIAN
(Looking at CHIARA while whining with a frown on his face.)
Tonight? But baby, we’ve got a wedding tomorrow.
(CHIARA, MIRANDA, ROSALINA, EVELYN, DANI, and TRISHA all
step back and gasp. MIRANDA places herself in front of CHIARA, acting
as a barrier.)

CHIARA
H–How did you-

EVELYN
What the hell are you doing here?
1– 3 – 37

BRIAN
(Trying to push past MIRANDA to talk to CHIARA.)
You never sent your location, sweetie. I got worried.

BRIAN
I was too worried to enjoy my time at the party so I came here to make sure CHIARA was safe.

MIRANDA
(Quickly grabbing DANI’s drinking cup and waving it at BRIAN to push
him back.)
Back foul beast! Back I say!

BRIAN
(Taking a step back while putting hands up.)
Woah, woah, woah! What’s with the dramatics? I was just worried that something bad had
happened to my princess.

EVELYN
We see right through you, psycho!

BRIAN
(Becoming increasingly aggravated and slightly aggressive.)
Psycho? Excuse me? I’m not appreciating the nasty attitude when I’m just trying to check on my
girl.
(Putting his hand on his chest in offense, looking at CHIARA.)
This is why I didn’t want you going out tonight, CHIARA. Remember when I told you that
people would try to break us apart and say bad stuff about me? Well, look what’s happening now.
You never listen.

MIRANDA
Don’t speak to her like that you–

TRISHA
Asshole!

BRIAN
(Looking at MIRANDA and becoming increasingly aggressive.)
I don’t know why you don’t like me. I make your best friend happy. Don’t you want your best
friend to be happy? Why are you so against her happiness? Are you jealous of her?

ROSALINA
(Looking at CHIARA.)
Don’t listen to him, CHIARA. He just knows he’s in shit. He’s trying to talk his way out of it.
1– 3 – 38

EVELYN
We’re all looking out for her happiness and wellbeing. Unlike you.

BRIAN
CHIARA is the love of my life. Her happiness is my happiness. And I always lookout for her
wellbeing.
(Looking at CHIARA.)
Are you just going to let them talk to me like this, CHIARA? I do everything for you to show
you my love, and you’re letting your friends treat me like this and walk all over you?

CHIARA
They speak for themselves.

BRIAN (aggressively.)
Wow. One night out and you’ve changed completely. The old CHIARA would never side against
me. We’re supposed to be in this together. What did they do to you? Look at you, they’ve even
changed how you dress. You never dress like this. You’re dressing like your friends.

DANI
Cause her friends dress how they want when they want.

BRIAN (aggressively.)
You’re all basically asking for it wearing those clothes.

MIRANDA (angrily.)
You pig. The hell do you think you’re talking to?

BRIAN
My fiance. I’m just looking out for her. I would never want anything bad to ever happen to her.

EVELYN
You’re a liar!

TRISHA
You’re a murderer!
(BRIAN becomes silent for a second, holding a blank stare.)

DANI
(Looking at TRISHA.)
TRISHA, you’re not supposed to say that to the actual murderer!
(BRIAN grins.)
1– 3 – 39

BRIAN (aggressively.)
Ooh, I see. The ghost tour has got you all in a mood, huh? Alright little investigators, it’s time to
wrap it up. Let’s go CHIARA.
(Trying to reach for CHIARA. MIRANDA pushes him.)
That’s enough ladies. I let the psycho comment pass, but I don’t appreciate the additional slander.
CHIARA, let’s go.

ROSALINA
How did you find us if CHIARA didn’t send her location?

BRIAN
I was in the area…

ROSALINA
Don’t you have your own bachelor party to be at?

BRIAN
As I said, I always lookout for her wellbeing. New Orleans is not safe for a girl like her.

ROSALINA
We’re in a group.

BRIAN (aggressively.)
I don’t have to validate my intentions for you. CHIARA knows the truth.
(Looking at CHIARA.)
Let’s go, my love. We have a wedding to look forward to tomorrow.

CHIARA
(Thinking in silence for a second. She takes a deep breath in.)
The wedding is off, BRIAN.

BRIAN
What? You probably had too much to drink, babe. You don’t know what you’re–

CHIARA
I didn’t drink today. And I said what I said and I mean it. The wedding is off.

BRIAN (aggressively.)
You’re making a mistake, CHIARA. Your friends are filling your head with bullshit about me.
We were meant to be together.
1– 3 – 40

CHIARA
Can I ask you a question?

BRIAN
Anything babe, anything.

CHIARA
Was Ruth meant to die?

BRIAN
(Pauses for a second then continues.)
Ruth?

CHIARA
(Opens her hand, showing the nail to BRIAN.)
Don’t play bullshit with me, BRIAN.

BRIAN
(Pauses for a second in shock, then continues.)
Ew. Why are you holding a dirty nail?
(Reaching for the nail.)
Here, give that to me so I can throw it away.
(CHIARA pulls away. EVELYN takes out her phone from her purse.)

CHIARA
Oh, so you know where this is from?

BRIAN
I don’t know what you’re talking about. All I know is that you’re holding a bloody nail.

CHIARA
I know, BRIAN. And I know that you know.
BRIAN
I don’t understand, CHIARA. You’re holding out a bloody fingernail to me.

EVELYN
(Dialing 911 on her phone and speaking.)
Hello? I need the police here right away.

BRIAN
1– 3 – 41

(Panicking in an angry, aggressive tone.)

What the fuck? Why is she calling the police, CHIARA?

MIRANDA
Why are you upset, BRIAN? Is something wrong?

BRIAN (upset.)
You’re calling the police, I'm assuming on me. Are you out of your mind?

MIRANDA
If you did nothing, then you shouldn’t be worried.

EVELYN
(Speaking to the police on the phone.)
I’m calling to report the murderer of Ruth Hill. My friends and I have reason to believe that my
best friend’s fiance is the culprit. We believe that we have found the missing, bloody fingernail
of Ruth.

BRIAN (angrily.)
(Trying to reach EVELYN and snatch her phone away. MIRANDA,
ROSALINA, CHIARA, DANI, and TRISHA block him and push him
back.)
Are you fucking insane? I’m going to–
(Stopping for a second, looking at CHIARA.)
CHIARA, please. Think about how I treat you. I treat you like a princess. Are you really willing
to throw everything away?

CHIARA
I will not be the next woman. There will not be one more woman dead.

MIRANDA
Not one.

EVELYN
Please hurry. Thank you.

BRIAN
You got nothing on me. A dirty fingernail is all you got? Try me, babe.

EVELYN
If you did nothing, then you should have no problem providing your DNA to confirm that the
blood on the fingernail doesn’t belong to you.
1– 3 – 42

MIRANDA
But we all know the truth.
(Police lights and sirens blare.)

CHIARA (smirking.)
Your ride’s here.

BRIAN (panicking.)
Shit!
(BRIAN runs to the right of and off the stage. CHIARA, MIRANDA,
ROSALINA, EVELYN, DANI, and TRISHA all point to the right of the
stage.)

CHIARA
(Calling out to the police, loudly.)
He went that way!
